Its a starter set; it's supposed to give new players an easy introduction to the game, hobby and background without exploding their heads with bumpf. How the hell is a new player supposed to have any idea of what is/isnt a good unit/army? The whole point of the set is to enable new players to get games in easily and learn the rules that way. They can then use the models as the basis for growing and expanding (or not if they choose not to)

He sounds like an idiot anyway so why waste oxygen with people like that

A few months ago at a 1500 point 40k tournament I was running, the first place winner was using only models from 2 AOBR sets a devastator box and a dark angels chapter upgrade sprue. Not bad to a crappy starter set.

way too much

Where to start here

Captain - you need a HQ choice, and being a starter set you wont want to feth about with chappy or libby rules just yet.

Tact squad - You need these anyway, its a troop choice, with basic weapon layout, works well though.

Termies - A nice solid and stable unit, most marine armies will run a single unit or more.
Only prob is no heavy wep option, but once again, starters dont want to play about with assault cannon rules.

Dread - Once again, another common unit that works well, only downfall is its wep layout, but thats not really a problem.

Warboss - You need one, he has a klaw, who cares?

Nobz - retinue for the boss, he needs his own unit, they hit pretty hard and work well, most people take them.

Boyz - I think this comes under the tac squad thing aswell.

Koptas - simple, they are ranged anti-tank and look good, another common unit.

all in all: Its a starter set, so it wont include a varied assortment of special rules, just basic kit to get people into the game.
Models - So what they are snap-fit? still look good (i prefer the snap tac squad to the normal one)

I have close to 5000pts of Marines and have 1500pts of Orks(new player to orks) I bought the AOBR starter set and found it useful for both my Marines and obviously my ork army too. Tell the guy to shut the hell up, you DON'T have to buy the thing if you don't want to!!

Unless there actually "IS" an inquistitor standing behind you yelling "buy it or I'll purge you".

It doesn't have what he wants? What does he want? Scouts coated in gold leaf? Gilded boyz? A platinum warboss? Most if not all SM armies have tacs... Perhaps even Terminators. Tell him to go to hell.

Surely the AoBR and BfSP sets are designed as starter sets .... meaning they are NOT for people who already have armies and play (and thus can design an army) but are rather for players STARTING the hobby? I'm sure someone has pointed this out to him, but it bears repeating.

I would probably not buy AoBR - I have a whole passel of SM minatures I haven't painted yet. I don't need more. But, if my mate was saying "Hey, I like those little armored dudes you have, I'd love some in blue and where can I get the rules?" I would be pointing him in the direction of AoBR and a can of Ultramarines blue.

Sure, the basic starter sets do not contain troop types which a more experienced player contains. In other news, you cannot scratch your back with a running chainsaw. Horses for courses, people.

And by "people", I mean the noob whose dumb comments inspired the begetting of this thread.

Ok, do not troll him. ignore all anger posts above. You can get enough satisfaction just reading what replies you have already receiveed, to yourself. there is nothing gained by hurting him.

This guy thinks he is smart. So ask him how much the rulebook and accessories are worth out of the set. ok, subtract that value from the cost of the boxset. that is the cost, not value of the miniatures.
Offer to swap all of those minitures for the same cost in other miniatures from another army. Or find someome who nees those minitures and act as go between.

Either he will accept and be happy. Though I wont count on that.

Or he will most likely complain that all the minitures in the Black Reach/Sukull Pass boxset are not worth a box of guardians and a jetbike or similar. Fair enough, its not, but if he attempts to argue miniature to miniture value just stop him and say. "Well the boxsets are a bargain after all arent they." Accumulate witnesses to this effect, argument won and lost, no going back.

in the end if this person is going to behave the way he is play along and either force him to eat his words or a poor deal.

Misery. Missouri. Who can tell the difference.

I love the AoBR set since I bought got 300 orks and almost a 120 marines for a third of what they would normally go for. It is a starter set he can be quiet.

My only issue with AoBR is it not containing a legal SM army, as it needs a second troops choice.

Fantastic analysis.

I found the orks from AoBR to be great for mixing into units of Boys to fill out the numbers and speed up assembly.
The nobs were great for chopping up to use up the extra Klaws I had from Boys and the Nobs box.

I have had a tough time picking the AoBR tacs out from the other models I had from 3' away, cuz the differences aren't that noticeable unless you are trying to pick them out.
I would prefer to use snapfits to fill out squads, then have a couple multiparts for sergeants and corporals. That way I have 2 unique looking guys to lead if I split into Combat Squads.
When everyone is unique it makes identification of a leader more difficult.

tell him that usual marines(or most models) are to complex for brand new players to assemble straight from the getgo.
and there for will result in crappy models and people not likeing to continure the game.

I liked that when my friend and I purchased the starter kit and split it down the center that we were able to play right out of the box without gluing our guys together or anything. Just taped them to their bases and if there were arms or something that wouldn't fit, we'd leave them off. It made playing right out of the box significantly easier and faster. Plus we both wanted to play Marines and Orks anyway, so the kit was an incredible deal.
