Yeah, if someone could throw down a link for the trailer, I'd appreciate it.

Here's hoping that GW went to Blur Studios and got them to make a really cool trailer. Who are Blur? The guys who did the Dawn of War and Dawn of War II opening movies.

But it'll probably be some generic music track or a track from DoW whilst the camera moves and zooms around on a bunch of still pictures.

Because internet forums are all about positive comments.

Everyone got up early hoping for an announcement and now we're all gnawing at our own intestines in anticipation of being able to run out and throw down 100 bucks on a new game.

I'd say the campaign worked.
For me its more that in an attempt to put the strangle hold on online forums and communities such as this one, GW wants to control information and make themselves the center of things. Let me say this plainly: GW wants to destroy Dakka. This instance only shows what happens when they are the center of rumors and information, they lie and out right say something isn't what it is. Most people who wanted this game would have thrown down money regardless to being lied to. To be happy that they did this only invites the doom.

Why all this whining from people? Seriously- the thing hasn't been officially announced- we still know NOTHING official- and yet people are jumping to conclusions as always.

Another thing to point out is that not "everyone" as has been touted alot, knows what the mystery is supposed to be- so yeah- it is still a surprise to many, hence why such a marketing strategy has taken place.

Paranoid much? I think GW are more fed up with spurious and inaccurate rumours leading to a product being rubbished months before it even hits the shelves.

But no, you're right. They are out to get us. And our Nans. And our Hamsters. Especially our Hamsters. Even if you don't have a Hamster, GW are going to send you one. Then just when you've bonded with the furry little fella, they'll take him off you.

And I don't recall being lied to myself. There is a Mystery Box. Nobody yet knows what is inside said Mystery Box. A flier had a picture of a Terminator helmet, and a trailer of some sort involved a Ship flying towards a Space Hulk. Who says these are linked? It could be a teaser for an updated PC game of Space Hulk. We do not know. Only GW knows.

Alright, it hasn't officially been "announce" just very strongly implied. After months of being lied to. GW wants to endear themselves to us as our primary source of rumors and yet on one of the biggest ones of the year they are telling us it isn't in a way that is contradictory to that mission goal. The writing is on the wall, GW wants the online presence that Dakka, Warseer and a couple others have and enjoy. Rumors are a big draw for people to visit these sites.
I think GW's cutting into the rumor mill is more about forcing people to their site than anything else. The whole T-shirt thing is a sign of that larger marketing plan. I hope people just aren't too dumb to fall for this.

So when did Taco Bell first report that Space Hulk was being redone? I ask because if GW's aim was to stop rumours by "dropping the bomb" on us with a Space Hulk announcement, they're several months behind.

SO Space Hulk is the thing that's never been done before eh? Except for those two previous editions, and the easy version "Ultra Marines", and the computer games in their various versions.

Well I won't be needing this I have the original. But I'm very glad it wasn't all those lovely Demiurg things we got to see. If those were limited and I missed out I would have been severely hacked off. But it isn't, phew.

Does GW realize all the hype generated by the rumor mills are what excites the community and pushes each other to purchase the new releases ? which benefits their sales?

It does and it doesn't. As I mentioned earlier, all too often the knobends of the Internet start rubbishing the new product based entirely upon rumours, having a negative affect.

Keeping a tighter leash on rumours counteracts this. Plus, I tend to find my interest in a new product when it's been common knowledge for 6 months...

Rumour mills also kill. Just look back at all those Guards rumour threads and the pathetic wailing from those who claimed that they would sell their marines and quit the hobby because the Guard were getting new things.

Okay, bad example, that's just Dakka. But mass speculation will quickly turn into "real" rumours, especially when big sites pick them up without doing a double check further down the thread.

A good example of Interweb Jiggerypokery when it comes to rumours?

Warhammer 7th Edition.

Wishlists were posted. Wishlists became rumours. Rumours became 'fact'. And much whinging and bitching was made over absolutely nothing. For instance, a major wishlist turn up was for Cavalry and Chariots to only gain charge bonuses if they charged over half their range. Which would neuter them utterly. How so? Most Cavalry has a 14" charge reach. So in your turn, you move them into charge reach. Then, in my turn, I simply march the targetted unit straight at them the average of 8", bringing me within half your charge reach, neatly buggering any and all chances you may have had of winning the combat.

But this became irrefutable fact. People complained. People threatened to quit.

So to recap, GW are more concerned with accurate rumours, closer to the time of release. Is this such a bad thing? Is it anywhere near Aka_Mythos paranoid fantasy where GW want to eat the Interwebs? No. Of course not. It's a sound business decision.

99% of the inaccurate rumors would be immediately squashed if Games Workshop had a more transparent release schedule and were more open to the public when it comes to previews of products. Look at FFG's Chaos in the Old World preview section on their website for an example (not to mention a playable copy at Gen-Con).

Games Workshop makes a conscious decision to make obtuse references to up coming products and then let people make their own conclusions, I myself think this kind of marketing doesn't work anymore in the age of information but that's just me.

Well, that's GW's own fault for creating a rubbish product, really.

Shutting down the rumor mill is a pointless exercise in any case. All you really accomplish with that is pissing people off after they've already dropped the money on your gak product, and in my opinion that's way more damaging than pissing them off before the fact, because now they'll feel like they were conned out of their money and will be even more resentful.

When others and I walk into a GW store and ask is "Space Hulk being redone?" and they say "NO!" that is a lie. When GW says they're going to announce this game at Games Day and they don't that is a lie. When they tell me to go to their website and I can find out more, that is a lie. In the past they were tight lipped on this one they lied. If it isn't Space Hulk they squeak by on a technicality, but everything indicates it is. They can restrict and control information without being deceptive and misleading, not that I agree with that practice either.

So to stop that they're going to be even more secretive? C'mon Grotsnik, it doesn't take an idiot to see that a little transparency would go a long way to cutting out the rumours. Now this doesn't mean that they start releasing detailed product descriptions and release dates months and months in advance, this just means a little more info on what their plans are.

Their afraid that if they mention what Codex is next or go into detail about what's coming out everyone who doesn't play that army will get annoyed and not buy anything. I can sorta see that point, but it's a bit silly. They should be more concerned with getting people to buy their great new upcoming product and hyping that than keeping it secret until the last second as not to offend anyone.

I mean how well has this 'wave' idea gone down? Now not only do we not know what's coming out or when it's coming out but now we don't know if a model for a specific unit is even going to be made in the first place!!! This was their alternative to making a model for every unit in a Codex and releasing it within a month or so of the Codex's release.

But you have to remember, this is another example of GW seeing the customers as the route of all their problems. Rumours are our fault. Rumours are the fault of places like Dakka and BoLS and USE TACTICS Land. So to stamp out rumours they play stupid games like the mystery box nonsense and print cryptic T-shirts. It's infantile.

People often stop complaining about something if they know the reasons behind it. I've lost count of the amount of times I've had a problem solved at my work simply by telling the other party what was happening. They mightn't be happy about the outcome, but at least they know the reasons why. GW needs to learn this, stop blaming us for the rumour mill, and start being a little less secretive about everything they're doing.

But...they aren't shutting it down.

They wish to take more control over it.

Step 1. Plug the leaks. This seems to have happened pretty well.

Step 2. Decide on your marketing strategy, and stick to it. This I guess is where we are right now.

We're all (hopefully) intelligent enough to read an article given by a company about their own product and evaluate it outside of their predictably glowing review. Aren't we?

Just to put that in perspective, and I preface this by saying I don't know what it was like in your part of the world, but the staff in Oz were told not to discuss or otherwise speculate on the Mystery Box with customers. Mentions of 'Space Hulk' to customers could be met with disciplinary action.

I can't see any change except they've moved to carrot'n'stick methods, which is worse.

Why aren't they hyping Space Wolves?
Why aren't they previewing new models?
Why aren't they showing of the Space Wolf Codex?
Why aren't they getting Skaven players excited over their new book?

Why are they keeping their products secret at their own fething conventions rather than whipping the crowd into a frenzy with all the great new stuff they're about to release?

"Less is more" doesn't work for advertising new products. If the collective idiots running that fething studio had even one-half of one-half of a braincell they'd be doing everything in their power to let us know how great their new products are, and how the great things coming up 'til the end of the year are going to blow our minds and our socks off at the same time.

But what do we get?

Some T-shirts, some innuendo, and a trailer tomorrow. Yip-de-fething-do.
