You can count on me for that anyways. Hell Ive been told by many, I seem ahole-ish in person. I think its because I know Im joking around, but others havnt caught on yet. So biased opinions? Insulting overtones? Yes, right here
In truth, I make a more conscious effort to be (at least reasonably) polite on Internet forums.

How about my conspicuous absence from the Nazi vs. Japan debate? I am quite impressed with myself for not getting involved in that one, what with being probably in the top three Dakka Japan-lovers, along with Kilkrazy and Kid_Kyoto...
(Not that I'd deny Japan did horrible, horrible things in the war, but there is some needless Japan-bashing in that thread.)

Exactly.
Also,I see prolonged engagement in disagreements over the interwebs as a waste of time, take Religion for example...though someone may write something that may change my opinion (or at least offer a different perspective) concerning a certain viewpoint,no one is going to ever write anything that is going to cause me to "Believe in god"....and likewise..nothing I type is going to make a devout Christian slap their forehead and say " Well gee...I never thought of that...I'm giving up on this god thing right now."
The whole process simply devolves into a " I can repeat my crap more than you can repeat yours" situation most of the time.

Surely a war of attrition is the only good way to get your point across? If you drown the opposition in noise (text?), you truly have won.
I love the smell of the OT forum in the morning, smells like internet victory.

Moderation quality has dropped, the OT forum causes no end of grief, and there's a serious bias towards certain kinds of users.
Considering the level of civility you typically exhibit I find this statement highly amusing. Thank you for the laugh.

I think it's pretty civil in here, most of the time. A few years ago when I was more stressed and less patient I said some hasty things and to be honest the mods were pretty cool about it.
Nowadays I am more amused than anything else by things. I have one person on Ignore, but I'm thinking I'll undo that soon. He said something that caused me massive offense and I figured it was better to ignore than get really angry about it. I think there are only a few rude posters here, but I like them because they make it a bit more interesting. I would agree that religion seems to get a fairly strict treatment, but it doesn't bother me much. I stay out of creationism threads now anyway.

Well we just finished another religuious discussion. Yes it was locked however that is unusual, most are still open, also more tellingly it was locked because it was becoming circular not because of trolling.
Both Christians and those who dislike Christianity have axes to grind on this particular subject (Hitler and Christianity) and offense could have easily been taken yet the thread produced remarkably few trolls.
Such discussions usually start with a few muppets posting 'in b4 lock', but they need not hurry, they last for days and generate a grudging respect for opposed points of views, in spite of continued resistance to them from the majority of participants.
Temperates simmer that is true, but never boiled. Besides were are all creatures of bias and its easy to fail to see a reasoned alternative viewpoint as reason if it is outside ones paradigm. However despite diametrically opposed points of view surfacing and each side not being able or willing to answer the others questions to satisfaction; both sides included intelligent debate and quality attempts to put ones side across.
There are not many places on Teh Internets where you can have that. And you know what would happen if they tried.
Automatically Appended Next Post:
mattyrm wrote:Im pretty much on a polar opposite with Orlanth and GG, but i enjoy speaking with them and have never once thought "I dont want to read their posts"
I get on very well with Matty by all accounts, agree very closely on many topics outside religion, and I read an increasing respect in his questioning even when he tells me he thinks by theology doesn't add up; we can laugh about those differences too.
Hang around long enough and you will find the same people who you clash heads with agree elsewhere. Yes there are trolls who don't like what I or others say on one subject, and therefore take their hatreds onto others, but that is their problem not ours and it is easier than it might first appear to ignore those people. We can't expect perfection, but the real hostility issues are very few and far between.
a case in point of how Dakka really works, even over the last day some of the very same people I was exchanging pages of no holds barred - no ground given debate with were happily accommodating a recommendation to make a slight change of view on a seperate issue, even though the second issue itself is as highly contentious as the first. Were Dakka as petty and immature as forums are often elsewhere this would not be so.
Furthermore people normally forget disagreements quickly enough (outside the topics concerned) and with one or two exceptions don't bring hang ups to unrelated sections of the board, which is refreshing. In fact it is easy even for someone like me who is repeatedly outspoken in defence of a minority viewpoint on a contentious subject can get on in the larger community. I have not seen my opinions get in the way of a request for help with a list or raise ire if I make a post in Tactics.
Even boards member with whom I vocally disagree with on pretty much anything are still happy to talk gaming with me. I have exchanged 'Add to Friends' with people because we began to share modelling tips, collection advice and tactics on one of the games here, even though we under no illusions that we are opposed on pretty much all life issues we happen to discuss.
Dakka works.

What he means is some Christians and other Christians and non-Christians debating a topic. It is rarely actually dislike of Christians that drive a thread. What happens is someone says "I don't know, I think some bad stuff happened during the Crusades" and the next thing you know it is "OMG why do you bring your Anti-Christian agenda here? We're so persecuted!"

I find myself getting a little bullish about some topics where it'd be best to walk away from the computer. But I find I end up listing most people I've argued with as friends after a few volleys and eagerly following their posts thereafter. @Ahtman: There is a tendency for people (like me as often as not) to offhandedly post a very strong viewpoint at first, which can be translated as "disliking Christians" or "disliking atheists," but I pretty much agree with you. After the parties have calmed down a bit, it is almost never a case of somebody persecuting someone else for their beliefs.

Well, Tazz just earned a spot on my ignore list, and I pretty much hate all of you. J/K, though. To be serious, I don't participate in many of the more controversial threads anymore, because I don't particularly like arguing on the internet. It seems like an exercise in futility, at best. I do come here for news, and reactions to said news, however. I think the radical viewpoints some of the more vocal posters here hold make it possible to form an overall unbiased picture by weighing the merits of each side's argument.
