What he means is some Christians and other Christians and non-Christians debating a topic. It is rarely actually dislike of Christians that drive a thread. What happens is someone says "I don't know, I think some bad stuff happened during the Crusades" and the next thing you know it is "OMG why do you bring your Anti-Christian agenda here? We're so persecuted!"

Manchu wrote:

@Ahtman: There is a tendency for people (like me as often as not) to offhandedly post a very strong viewpoint at first, which can be translated as "disliking Christians" or "disliking atheists," but I pretty much agree with you. After the parties have calmed down a bit, it is almost never a case of somebody persecuting someone else for their beliefs.

However because I am religious, people openly accuse me of being unable to be impartial on such threads, often cloaked in terms that are unambiguously hostile. I openly admit that I have a vested interest in many topics on religion threads, not everyone is as honest, I have met crossed texts with plenty of fanatical disbelievers here on Dakka. Even when they do not show it in a direct discourse in respect to good debate it if often comes out in other threads. Frankly I get on better with people like matty, who doesn't like 'God botherers' and says as much face up, than with some who in all likelyhood don't know how biased they are. When poeple think they are impartial and are not they mistake a personal opinion for an established one with greater authoirty than it actually holds. Now this ironically is usually a bigger problem with regards to the religious than others, but most rational relgious debaters know this and can thus guard against it, however in relgious and political debate everyone contributing is suddenly religious or political, and one need not have robes or a party badge to be overly fervid.

By and large even this isx no big problem, as all but the tiniest minority don't bring their baggage to a new thread and can argue afresh, even with similar people on a similar topic.

Of what does the Earth Mother give that we may know of the continual flow and renewal of life?

The Waters of Life.

And whence do these Waters flow?

From the bosom of the Earth Mother, the ever-changing All Mother.

And how do we honor this gift, which gives us life?

By partaking of the Waters of Life.

And has the Earth Mother given forth her bounty?

She has!

Then give me the waters.

Whiskey means "Water of Life" IIRC.

Yep. Derived from the gaelic "uisce beatha."

That's a vast improvement on the "two MODs one cup" "art project" that was talked about anyway.

I like Dakka. It's one of very few sites I visit regularly and one of only 2 forums I post on.
I just counted. I've got 7 people on my ignore list. Six of them are because they posted with such horrifying lack of grammar, spelling and punctuation that I literally found myself unable to comprehend what they were saying without having a second or 3rd read.
The last is just one of the rudest people I've met online, and I found it better to ignore him than even read his drivel.

I think the Mods here do an admirable job, and the place is, overall, quite civil. That wasn't always the case. There was a time, before Yak owned the place, that Dakka was well known for devolving into arguing and name-calling. It's quite a nice place to hang out these days!

My only gripes are "A" the way "slow" and "slowed" are thrown around (which is more of a societal problem than anything else) and "B" the fact that a certain member seems to feel the need to go into graphic detail about his sex life in these (family) forums. Of course, "b" will resolve itself well enough, once the "report" button has been hit enough.

Well done, Mods.

On topic though, Dakka is easily my favorite Lady Gaga, religious debate and relationship advice website. For some reason people keep talking about "warhammers" or something, but aside from that it's pretty cool.

I have to say I cringe whenever relationship related stuff comes up on here, and cringe hard. But that's because I'm a grumpy bastard who has to wear a tie to work these days. I remember when I was in Uni and this stuff was our daily fodder.

The age spread here is pretty wide, which is sometimes interesting. We have some pretty literate early teens knocking about.
