This BS happens at least once a year. Granted the hobby is becoming increasingly cost prohibitive, but I think the majority (much like myself) see how much they have invested in the hobby (time, effort and money) and decide to keep going albeit purchasing less and less product.

Well, the I voted other, as the option to keep playing while spending nothing more on the "system" wasn't an option.
I have enough IG to just keep playing. Once they bring out 6th Ed, and the new IG Codex, I will be finished for good, as likely those I play with will invest where I will not.....playing 5th ed vs 6th really won't do
I can see myself getting more into 54mm display painting and Malifaux / Infinity in the near future, so that might cause me to wind up my IG a lot sooner.

I'll finish the army I've been working on, made up entirely of OOP/second hand minis...and of course I'll still play 40k home games (I'm not going to let 3 armies go to waste.)
But as far as starting new armies or purchasing new minis/models from GW...nope, won't be doing it..
If GW releases a "unit choice" for an army I have that I simply "Must have"...I'll scratch build it from plasticard/tubing and GS or find a suitable alternative from another company to use as a "counts as".

Yes and no. I still have models, and I rarely buy anything (Rarely like every 2 months i come by and buy something)
I have my armies and I am planning on making a new army one day when i find the time. I have a table in my basement so that one day when it is finished I can play games with some of my nerdy friends who love board games. (I.E. I play heroquest alot lol.)

I'll stick with 40K for now. I enjoy the fluff and the models, especially the hobby side of such things. I have one army, the Iron Warriors, and I have no plans for starting any others any time in the future.
That being said, I will gladly expand my army as I see fit. However I only buy from GW direct if I can't get something from a local hobby shop or second hand.
I use GW paints and greenstuff, but I absolutely refuse to pay their ridiculous prices for their other hobby supplies($15+ for rattle can primer? $8+ for PVA glue?)
So GW still gets my money sure, but on my terms.

You might not like it, but there clearly is a " GW hobby"; it is perfectly possible to be a wargamer and never spend a single penny on anything other than GW products.
This.
GW is a hobby for me. I buy, model, paint, play and study the rules of GW systems. It is my hobby. Been doing it since 1995 or so, no plan to stop now.

I only see myself playing 40k for table top games, and I see myself doing it for the foreseeable future.
The lore behind 40k is what draws me to the game so I don't see myself doing other games. There is also the fact that I don't live in a heavily populated area and most of the small tabletop gaming community appears to play 40k with heresy such as Warmachine being a side dish to the main game.
The bloated prices are a bit much though, and if they are raised any more in the next 2 years I will have to simply stop buying except for the second hand item for a good deal.

sorry. not that i have any true hate or anything for the guys and gals that are calling it 'the gw hobby' but its all wargaming, or tabletop gaming. if you had a friend who knew nothing of wargames, and he asked you what you were doing during a game, what would you tell him? 'oh, i'm playing a wargame' or 'oh, i'm playing a GW game.' the first one is clear of what you are doing, the second one requires a secondary explanation of GW that the friend doesn't really need; it's a wargame. To be fair, i don't like ANY brand recognition. I don't 'google,' i search on the internet, and the like, although i will occasionally ask for a Q-tip instead of a cotton swab(some people are clueless to that one).
back to the discussion! the one thing i am still happy with GW about is their metallic and foundation paints and their washes(they help a lot since i am not an awesome painter). although their new pots still dry out just as fast as every one that isn't a straight screw-top.

Eh? Assumptions? Threatened? I'm generally confused. I actually re-read the thread twice to try to figure out what you were referring to. Here's what I got out of it:
H. said there's no such thing as a GW Hobby, someone agreed, and then you countered with that it was "perfectly possible to be a wargamer and never spend a single penny on anything other than GW products" as being justification for there being a " GW Hobby". I offered other alternate situations trying to use that same logic, attempting to illustrate via reductio ad absurdum that there's only a " GW Hobby" because you call it a " GW Hobby." To which you offered the intellectual equivalent of "nuh-uh!" At this point was when I reiterated my point, emphasizing the absurdum portion, and then to which you tell me I'm making assumptions, I feel threatened, and that I'm not capable of thinking.
I guess I must be so incapable of thinking that I can't figure out why you've responded with personal attacks and non sequiturs. I'm also incapable of understanding the source of such a personal interest in the topic that you must resort to such things. However, I'm concerned that I might have already spend far more time trying to rationalize you than worthwhile, so I will chalk it up to "School's out for Summer", and go on with life.

The only way that allows me to continue in 40k is to look for really good deals on the net. Recently on Amazon I picked up 2 boxes of Chaos tactical squads(10 man) for the stunning price of £20.42 and no postage. This was the only way I could afford to start a Nightlords army. Hopefully at Claymore next month I'll pick up some second hand stuff to fill it out more. No finecast, not stopped laughing at all the problems that surround it.
In the UK there is one vile untrustworthy organisation all gamers should fear; the Government! In regard to price rises there is a budget coming up in the autumn and if this increasingly desperate bunch of loonies(The ConDems, name says it all) decide to do anything to claw back even more money from us you can be certain that GW will be lightning quick to raise prices to offset this. And then of course we have the spring budget in 2012! Another possible hike! Then of course comes the month we all love; JUNE! definite hike! Then of course comes the autumn budget... You see where I'm going with this? While some players at the moment say that they are getting value for money etc...remember the in the near future there is only TAX!

I have aborted my attempts at a Skaven army (stopped at about 1000 points, most of that from the IoB set), and my IG are currently languishing in their battlefoam, awaiting 6th edition for me to decide whether I will stick around or just pawn them off.
Most of my miniature wargame time is being spent on Warmachine/Hordes.

Selling two of my armies (DE and my WoC) and starting Khador for warmachine. I still love playing 40k and I love the setting, but I have to scale back what I have. The Highschool student budget keeps me from doing really big armies, but at some point I will have 3 2000 point armies, and I will probably stop there. Would still play the game though.

I find the claims of people leaving GW for other stuff to be specious in most cases. Other companies' models are also very expensive in most cases and where the models are cheaper they are frequently below GW's sculpting standards. Combine that with the fact that more people play 40k/WHFB than the other stuff and I think people will still be buying GW figures for the forseeable future.

Depends on where you are. I know a couple of shops around where 40k is languishing/gone/unwanted, WHFB is nonexistant, and Warmachine/Hordes is growing. Plus, I'm certain there are many more Historical wargamers than there are GW players - at least, competent ones.

Before May 16 I was excited about putting together a TK army (had bought a battalion, the new army book, magic cards, and some misc models) and getting back into Fantasy. I had plans to buy a bunch of stuff for that army as well as continue to build out my Orks. I was in my local GW store the weekend before. Then black Monday came. I haven't been back to the store sense and I haven't bought anything from GW. My plans for my TK army are shelved indefinitely. Since then I have started messing around with D&D 4E and a new indie store opened nearby that looks like it is fast on its way to becoming a local center for Warmahordes and Malifaux fans and I am looking at those systems to fill the void.
I figured that my righteous anger at GW's sales tactics, change in promotions and advance order restrictions, finecrap, and price increases would fade with time, but so far the malaise has not passed and it seems that every couple of weeks there is a new reason to hate GW. The only thing that keeps me from saying I have quit my GW hobby is I am still building/painting the backlog of models previously purchased and still follow the news and the community (as evidenced by this post). In the meantime, GW is not getting a dollar from me and I am no longer encouraging anyone else to pick up GW's games.
I am planning on getting the Warmachine two player starter box when it comes out......
So, what prerequisites does everyone thinks exist that must be meet before you can genuinely lay claim to have quite GW?

I agree that Finecast will likely be an issue with my claim of being able to get GW stuff cheaper by using the proper retailers. I am lucky that I currently do not need anything in Finecast and was able to get what I still needed in metal still. I think though that we will see more and more plastic characters like the new wizards so that in the midterm Finecast becomes less of a problem. Hope dies last. ^^

I find the figures made for Kings of War to be rather low in price and also low in asthetic beauty. However, the remark about asthetics of other companies' sculpts is, ultimately, my opinion but cost can be examined empyrically. For example, Privateer Press sells a "Khador Battlegroup" box for $50.00 USD. It has only three plastic figures. That is expensive in reality, not in opinion.

Agree on both points. The Khador battlegroup is more expensive per model - which are nice, big beefy pieces of plesin - but that price also includes the cards and the full-color quick-start rules that comes in every box.
The comment I made was more directed towards your feelings toward other companies' sculpts.
