On a boat, Trying not to die.

Using simple green to strip metal models? Pfft. Rookie stuff. If it's a metal model, you can use MEK, brake fluid, or paint thinner. It's faster and more effective than Simple Green.

Also, JESUS CHRIST! That's a lot of Sisters!

I had tried it the way nerdfest09 had suggested, but the outcome was not... satisfactory.

While I agree that there are better chemicals to strip metal models, I went with simple green as it:
1) is on hand
2) is useful for cleaning the apartment as I am in the process of moving out
3) doesn't smell as bad giving the small cubic footage of my dwelling

Also,
4) I am in no rush to have the seraphim stripped as I have far too much to paint before I even get to them, which I see you have noticed.
Chowderhead wrote:JESUS CHRIST! That's a lot of Sisters!

5) Given the circumstances that I live in a one bedroom apartment that lacks proper storage for such toxic substances, I went with the less toxic option.

Btw, no offense taken.

Doh! my bad then did strip pretty good for me though, although i did feed $20 notes into the water and whistled it encouragement and shouted "yeah strip for me baby"! maybe that's all it needed? and a stiff bristled brush? sorry it wasn't optimal for you dude, I wonder why it didn't work well for you? how were the models after? I had one or two that appeared sticky but they were coated with clear as well, yours have any strange coatings?

I suppose on the upside, it's non toxic and none of the sisters will be infected by anything!

Egad, Mr. Potato. You're really powering through those, nicely done. Those are some very nice conversions too. The Spite Missiles are great, haha. Might have to steal that idea. Very much looking forward to more.

I mean, looking forward to more while being unhappy for making the rest of us look bad. I feel like I should actually work on my own sisters army now or something.

No, the temptation was there, but I must remain diligent. I am in the middle of glazing and I am almost done with the the weapons. Skull white is one of the worst paints to work with compared to other brands of white. Why use it then? I am trying to stick with all GW paints to maintain the purity of the army. Then comes lining, and I only have one good bottle of Citadel brown ink. It must be used sparingly. My precious....

Here is my schedule:

I hope to finish the cloth by the end of the week and the armor by the start of next week. Then I can move on to the final details and finish the infantry by the end of next week. Tanks will have to wait until the 19th and 20th. Cutting it close, I know, but think I can have those finished in two days using an airbrush. Then Celestine will have all of my attention on the 21st. Then on the 22nd, as promised, I shall give the army's virginity to my good friend and play test my list. I will see what I can do about slapping together a display board on the 23rd and then it is off to Da Grand Waaagh on the 24th and 25th.

Will I win best painted?
-Probably not. There are far too many people who purchase pre-painted armies from more experienced professionals.
Will I care? -Not really, so long as they don't try to take credit for it.
Will I win best general? -Not with this codex. Though if I did, then the dice gods must have accepted my offering (see my previous post)

When you get to a working keyboard, feel free to elaborate. It would be nice to hear the full story. I am trying to figure out what you mean by spoiled though...

When I first started playing (well seriously, so not right at first) I belonged to a rather large gaming group of about 12 people. We all worked together, most of us lived together (army). So we got to talk about 40K all day, everyday, and play it at night. What was especially nice was that we had a guy with SoB, DH (without Gk), GK, IG (infantry), IG (mech), Tau, Chaos (remember with numbers and everything!), SW, Orks, Nids, Crons. It was pretty much the definition of awesome. All painted no proxies. Totally spoiled.

So, I think I may have underestimated the time it took to blend red and scorched brown smoothly on the model. I have gone back to using devlan mud over the red and then highlight with blood red. The devlan wash helps to pick out the subtle curves in the cloth but it is not dark enough for the deeper recesses, so I touch those up with scorched brown. It seems to speed up the process while keeping similar results. I think this way saves me about 2/3rds the amount of time.

Here is a side by side of 2 sister, one with the base coat, and one with shades and highlights. I wouldn't call it golden daemon quality blending but I think it is enough to stand out above the rest as far as table top.

Well, I just received some bad news just the other day. The organizers for Da Grand Waaagh have announced that the WD Codex will not be permitted at the upcoming GT in two weeks. I had originally emailed them on the 14th of August and asked if it will be permitted and had received no reply. Currently there is no restrictions listed on their website, here , nor anywhere on the GW community event page at the time of this writing. The final response that I received was as follows, "We did respond to your question, within a couple days to my recollection. The reason being was due to familiarity of the codex. I do allow a new codex release to be used within 1 month of a tournament. Sorry for any inconvenience the situtation has caused." No copy of the original email had been forwarded.

The email I received 30 hours ago was the first I have heard of any restriction. I am still deciding which I am more upset about, having to use an obsolete codex if I want to use these models, or the lack of clarity from the organizers about the event. For example, the missions are not announced before list creation and will not be standard. So players are going blindly into mission which will more likely have the creator's subjective outcomes. It was things like this which built the momentum to create The Bay Area Open. It's foundation was spite, just the way I like it.

Now that I am done ranting about the tournament organization, how will this affect my blog? I am going to try and finish for my own sake but it may be at a more relaxed pace. I will more likely get the base colors done on the models as well as some kind of cheesy basing just to qualify for the door prizes. I learned last year that the paint judging at this tournament is kind of....off (remember not to necro). And I know that there will be at least 5 people that will be bringing really nice looking commissioned armies.

In other modeling news, I found this strange rock...

It had no one's name on it so I took it in.

Little did I know, it got it on with my green stuff and instamold while I was alseep and got pregnant! And when I awoke the next morning, another was born

I will see if this reproducing pet rock can create enough babies to base my whole army. I may add additional marking to 40k it up, but I think the hard part will be to cut the Sisters off their tabs evenly for the flat surface.

If you have a dremel or similar tool you may be able to add a slot for the tabs to the base and then you wouldn't need to pin all your models to the base.

Whew, glad the organizers disallowed the SOBs. I was really worried about not being prepared to fight the large swath of SOB players.

On second thought, maybe if you could have painted your army last year to an "advanced" standard they would have listened to you.

Ugh! I'm back. That was a rough one. I survived the GT going 3-0 on the first day only to lose to the Best general of the tournament the start of day 2 and had a very fun draw the final round. I have pictures up on my photobucket account from the event. Sadly, due to the move, I was not able to finish painting. I lost a lot of motivation as the event drew closer. At least that will be the last time I will use the old codex.

On the plus side, I just had a 3-0 win streak using the new codex at the Head Hunter tournament at "Chris's Shop" in Antioch, CA. The mission points were a bit wonky but I will gladly take the wins. I only scored enough point to get 3rd place, but the last thing I need at the moment is more models to paint (see page one ). I used the prize to help put a dent into the price of buying a rare Mordheim Bertha model. I am deciding what to convert her into. So with that I suppose they have earned themselves a good touch up.

So here is the unfinished sadness that won me three games today, along with the new set up I have at my new place. I have a wireless keyboard and mouse that I put away to make room to paint. And instead of a Ninja Mirror, I have a new monitor to watch...movies

I slapped the list together just an hour before I left for the tournament which is why some parts are not painted. There is a few in the heavy bolter squad that just have the gold done. And the troop immolator has bare naked heavy bolters that are not even cleaned. There wasn't originally a 10th vehicle in the list, which is why the one second to the left doesn't have the red on the front. And Celestine was put together in 3 minutes.

Well, hopefully there will be a steady updates now that I am more settled into the new place.

Been working on getting those unpainted models up to basic minimum just so they fit in. And I am about 5 models away from finishing the red. The formula on the red has changed from the original plan to a pallet of scorched brown, dark flesh and blood red. Dark flesh is AMAZING for getting subtle shades on the blood red.

I felt a little burned out so I did some faces and tested out a hair color. Here is a veteran.

The skin is my typical tallarn flesh undercoat, dwarf flesh basecoat, elf flesh highlight, ogren flesh wash, and elf flesh touch up. The hair is Iyanden dark sun with white blended. Ogren flesh for shading and rootes, and then skull white highlight for that healthy hair shine.

I am experimenting around with the armor highlights. This one was done with codex gray and skull white. I might do space wolf gray to bring it down a notch and add some contrast to the overall warm tones. I like the way I blotched on the highlights make it seem like I edited the photo and turned up the contrast to the max.

When I am done with the red, I think I am going to skip to the tanks since a lot of people seem to be overlooking the effort that I am putting into the infantry because the tanks are so untouched. That, and I want to avoid doing the skin for now, because ogren flesh is the nastiest smelling pigment I have ever used! Reminds me of a Porta Potty at a summer carnival.

Figured I should do another update today. After my last game I decided it was time to get paint on my HQ, Saint Celestine. I also wanted to get started on planning the colors on the vehicles. Here are some pics of the progress.

Model Primed

Model dusted with a lighter primer to bring out the details.

One of the first things I painted was the face and hair, just to get a sense of her expression and character. I then moved on to the gold since she wears a lot of it and I didn't want to over do it. I am still debating if I should do the trim on the armor.

Then I focused on the red cloak and skirt since it makes up the majority of the color and will require the most blending work. I like how it turned out, but it will still need some kind of image on the back to make it stand out. As I am typing this, the flowers and bird are done, as well as the helmet on the ground. I will have to show that later.

The next few step will probably be deciding on the basing for her. I think if I use broken up cork, I think I can match the texture of the rock she is above and have it blend to the rest of the base. I was thinking to have it kind of craggy and have a few flickers of flame come from below it. I am sure there will be plenty of examples if I search the net enough.
The second thing I will have to decide once that is done, is the sword color. Since she holds it off to the side, I don't want it to throw the color balance off (if that makes any sense). If I do the lava type effect, I will probably have it reflect the orange from the fire, and go that route.

On to the tank.

Remember those domes that were masked a while back? I tested one out. It's do or die time.

6 out of 7 circles popped off nice and clean. One of them was really weird, like the residue from a price tag left over from pealing it. I managed to scrape it down to the plastic, but it left some scratches. Inspire by the ghost of Billy Mays, I used a thin layer of gloss varnish to make those scratches practically disappear! You can't really tell which one it is unless you are looking for it. The plastic itself is not exactly crystal clear.

I think one of the things that took me the longest to decide was the huge emblem on the side. Everyone seems to have their own preference. I went with the gold fleur with a bleached bone/ skull white ring. The inner area has a red ring with gold lettering. I found that shining gold has Terrible coverage, so I undercoated first with Iyanden darksun. I used to undercoat with brazen brass, but some genius decided to stop producing that color for citadel game color. I tried tin bitz at first, but I found it was too dark and make the gold more copper looking. I also threw in a few quick edge highlights of space wolf grey on this side just so that it doesn't look so flat in the picture.

There is still much to decide on for the tanks. One of the first things I will have to decide is if I should paint the field on the top hatch in any sort of fashion...Oh! It just hit me. I will paint it with squad heraldry. I think that could work.
I also have all of those ornate plates that come with the tanks. I want to place them on there somehow without overdoing it. What makes it hard is that most of them dont even fit nicely in the places you want to put them!

Hope you enjoyed.

I have Faith.

Keep in mind that removing the tabs greatly depreciates the value of the mini. You may decide to sell one day to fund another project.

That being said. When I remove tabs I use one of 2 methods for flattening feet. I use either rough grit sandpaper, or a knife sharpening stone. I get a nice grip on the mini and make sure it has even pressure put on both feet. I then gently rub it across the surface a few times until I can feel it sitting flat.

I did an entire army of Aspect Warriors this way.
