You want to know what I did after I played through the Space Marine demo?

I loaded up the game I have been playing on my PS3, flew to a rocket launching site with three rockets ready to be shot into orbit, used a combination of helicopters and a grappling hook to scale all three rockets, blowing each one up in turn, then stole a jet fighter and shot another rocket out of the sky as it was taking off. It felt bad ass.

Clomping around as Brother-Captain Strong of the Sounds-Really-Uninterested-in-the-Script Marines was not as fun.

I'll stick to Just Cause 2.

Just Cause 2 is one of those games which is actually less fun to play the story, and more fun to roam around doing all kinds of maddeningly crazy stunts.

If you enjoy JC2, I suggest Mercenaries 2: World in Flames and inFamous. They're very much in the vein of 'open world'.

You'd probably like Red Faction: Guerrilla as well.

But I still think Space Marine is awesomesauce, but it certainly IS NOT an open world/interactive game. Its a game about crushing orks and chaos, and that's about it. Also helping some weak guardsmen.

I didn't want an explaination of the entire game. I want the 5 basic questions answered. "Who? What? When? Where? Why?" News papers can answer that in the first paragraph, yet I can't get an answer for that in a demo game? Most demos I've played give you the first 2 levels, with atleast a little bit of story to wet your appetite. This just made me feel like Afro Samurai and Serious Sam got put together.

Go find me a demo that does this. Cause I have never had a demo that explained the entire premise of a game.

Soladrin wrote:First.. how is a Longlas in any way, better then a stalker patern bolter? (except maybe for effective range) Hell, they would be tiny in an SM's hands and would look stupid.

As for the grenade launcher, IMO the best weapon in the demo. Just put down traps/stick a nob full, kaboom.

You're missing the point here. You have three bolters that do the exact same thing, only one shoots fast, and one has a scope. They are all still shooting the same round. That's like playing CoD and having the same gun as primary, secondary, and backup. Only one gun has a scope, one gun benefits from double tap, and one gun is just vanilla with iron sights. It's still the same gun. From a design standpoint, that's utterly boring. It's even been said that the bolt pistol serves little purpose because there is no delay in using melee while using any other gun.

You said it yourself, the Longlas is better range, and that's sort of the point of a sniper rifle. Even in the tabletop, you've got the same chance of causing a wound against an ork boy with either weapon (one follows sniper rules and the other based on S vs ork boy T). Instead of just throwing more boltguns into the game, they could have used, well, something else. It might be small in comparison to a space marine, but I've no doubt a space marine could use a longlas effectively. Even if the longlas isn't the best choice for a weapon replacement, it's still better than another bolter that sits beside the other two bolters in the weapon selection menu.

You also missed the point of the grenade launcher topic. I never said it wasn't effect, I just said it looked stupid. From what I can tell, it's a grenade launcher that shoots kraks. Using krak grenades against hordes of orks seems like a pretty terrible tactical solution.

Also, being the best weapon in the demo means little when the others sort of suck. Oh wait I mean other, because the other three guns are basically the same gun.

P.S. Is the vengeance launcher or whatever it's called even a real gun in the tabletop? I've never heard of it and I'm curious.

But the three bolters don't do the exact same thing. The stalker works MUCH differently than the regular bolter; and the bolt pistol is just a backup sidearm.

One has a small clip, one shoots fast, one has a scope that does a little bit more damage (I really don't get that. It's a solid core shell fired at sub sonic speeds. I'm no gun nut but it sounds like using AP rounds on an unarmored target. I would think you get more damage out of a round that explodes after coming into contact with them).

It might not seem that way to you, and I'm not saying it's wrong to think a different way, but to me, it feels the same as using a gun in any other game. I can pull the trigger slowly and make myself reload after a few rounds, I can pull the trigger quickly and make myself reload after more rounds, or I can look through the scope and get critical damage headshots, and reload after a few rounds.

Thing is, the modding community is doing well so far on the game, they've already made it to where you can change the way Tidus looks (got mine set to angry marine, cyborg, mutton chop tidus). They've already got model replacers out, so I'm sure at some point I'll have a way to make the weapon selection more interesting.

I'm not sure what GW's thinking behind the Stalker Pattern Boltgun is but the answer could be the extended barrel and Stalker rounds. An extended barrel in a firearm generally translates to the round traveling at a higher velocity; perhaps this is where the 36" range in Table-Top and the higher damage in Space Marine comes from?

" Stalker Silenced Shells: Stalker Shells are rounds with low sound signatures, meant for covert fighting. They are often used in conjunction with an M40 Targeter System, an extended barrel, and a stock to create a sniping weapon system. A gas cartridge replaces both the propellant base and main charge for silent firing, but this sacrifices muzzle velocity as a result. A solidified mercury slug replaces the mass-reactive warhead for lethality at sub-sonic projectile speed. These rounds are used when stealth and precision are required."

It's also considered a heavy weapon on the tabletop, yet you can move around while you shoot it....hmmm

No I'm not going to nitpick that much into it.

For anyone who hasn't figured out the Vengeance Launcher, you fire it as many times as you want, then press RELOAD, to set them off. They stick to enemies and the environment, and it appears you have to click reload for every one you shot out if you want them all to explode, but you control when.

Really, really fun lol.

That would have helped earlier tbh lol. I was shooting going "Okay how do these kill things" so yea I had orks runnin with flashy blue lights stuck to them that I shot dead with the bolter lol.

As I'm sure many of you are aware, the Space Marine demo came out of a few days ago. I finaly got a chance to play it today (finals week) and I must say I'm very impressed. Here's my thoughts on it.

Demo level design and missions
Spoiler:
Firstly, the demo contains 2 playable levels. The second is very short but it allows you to use a jump pack, which is pretty fun. I'll get to that later.

So the levels... They're everything you could want from a 40k game visually. When you get outside the background environment is massive. There's a huge crane, a large gate with an ad mech symbol on it, and just huge crap everywhere. The levels are verry straight forward, which is what you'd expect. Everything is beautiful. I really can't say enough about it. I'll be posting a video at the end that has a walk through from one of my favorite dudes.

Level 1: basically just endless slaughter of hordes of orks. It's everything you'd want it to be.
Level 2: shows off the jump pack

Combat
Spoiler:
Two words. Good Lord! I can't tell you the last time I've felt this bad in a video game. As it is put in the video below, Kratos ain't got on Cpt. Titus. Combat is smooth, easy, fun, powerful, bloody, crazy, bloody, awesome, did I say bloody? You really feel like a space marine destroying hordes of orks. It's perfect. Your health is very similar to the Halo "recharging shield + health" style. You have your armor, which recharges after a durration, and health that does not. You can regain health in one of two ways: executions and Fury. In order to execute you must stun (cept for gretchen which are esentially free HP cuz you don't have to stun them to execute). While your in combat (maybe for killing stuff) you gain fury. There's a big Ultramarine symbol in the bottom left that when it fills up you can activate your fruy. Durring this time your HP regen goes through the roof making it nearly impossible to die.

Weapons
Spoiler:
There are 6 playable weapons in the demo (well 7ish if you count the jump pack as a weapon)

Bolt Pistol: Both this and the bolter are almost the same. The first thing you notice when you fire it is how powerful it feels and how utterly good it sounds. I didn't watch the video before I played, and I came to the same conclusion as TotalBiscuit. It sounds like a bolter should sound. It feels like it too.

Bolter: Just like the pistol, it looks, feels, and sounds like you'd imagine it to. The one thing to note is that when you kill something, it explodes in a rain of blood... you know... like it blew up inside the ork. SO PERFECT!

Vengenece Launcher: An odd granade launcher made specifically for the game. Neither myself, nor any of my friends, nor TotalBiscuit could really figure it out. My best guess is that it's a proximity mine. Seems to be the best answer. It's great for launching a few rounds into a horde to soften them up.

Stalker Bolter: Basically a sniper rifle, just like the other bolt weapons, this thing feels fantastic. It'll blow off the head of an boy that's unfortunate enough to be on the recieving end. Perfect 40k sniper rifle!

Chain Sword: Your basic and starter CCW in the demo. (Note: The controls list a combat knife so it is possible it's not the starter weapon in the final release). There are combos and stuns, and you must stun someone to execute them. Executions are awesome btw.

Power Axe: You can pick this up durring the last part of the first mission. (TotalBuscuit missed it in his video). When facing the lift it's to your left all the way back next to the lift. You must swap out your chain sword for it, but it's worth it. Judging by the power axe and the menu, the better CCW give you larger and more powerful combos The power axe feels even better than the chain sword and you can just wreck the wave that comes in. When I played through I didn't realize that executions gave you life back, so I actually died once durring the large horde at the end.

Jump Pack: I'll list it here because offers a special move. While you're airborne (and i tested it, you only have to be just slightly off the ground) you can do a charge move that has a similar effect that Death From Above in DoW does. You charge the ground dealing AoE damage, stunning or killing everyone around you. Also it's important to note that the only ranged weapons you can use while wearing it are the bolt pistol and bolter.

Movement
Spoiler:
What can I say? You feel like a giant hulk of armor. You can't jump without a jump pack, only roll. When you drop from a height and hit the ground there's no such thing as a soft landing. It seems like a giant block hit the ground. His knees don't even really bend much. It's just "clunk." Which is too say, it's perfect IMHO.

When you have the jump pack things are a little different. It seemed like (although I'm not sure) you run a little faster. You can use the jump back to dash, probably for the purpose of replacing the roll you can do without it. Also, something really cool, is that you can use that DFA attack i talked about earlier for faster travel. It really makes you fly!

Final Thoughts
Spoiler:
Simply put, this game is everything they promissed us it would be. I have preordered so I can get the Chaos skins. If you have a PC that can run it, 360, or a PS3, try this demo out now!. I played it on the PS3 and... just wow.

Total Buscuit's Video
Spoiler:
Total Buscuit makes great videos. This one cracks me up because he openly admits that, while he's never a fanboy of anything, 40k he is. He kinda squees like a little girl and is as excited about it as a fat kid in a candy shop. Admitedly, I pretty much had the same reaction he did. I didn't watch his video until after I played it, and I came to all the same conclusions he did. Take a look if you want a good video of it. As a side note, he missed the power axe, LOLOL!!!!

Here ya go.

Oh? Where else does it make an appearance? In many interviews the person showing off the game has said that the Vengeance Launcher is a new weapon that Relic created. It is far different from Astartes Grenade Launchers, Auxiliary Grenade Launchers, and the Grenade Launchers used by the Imperial Guard.

Also, for console players, you can hold the reload button to detonate all of the deployed grenades at nearly the same exact time. Tapping the reload button simply detonates one at a time.

WTF? I've never seen it before, and I hear from others that it was custom made for this game. Oh well. And yeah, i figured it out the nades my second run through. I actually made a thread with all this a while ago then a MOD pointed me to this one. This was just copy paisted from my other thread, guess I coulda altered it. /shrug

The Launcher is a normal grenade launcher.

The "Vengeance" grenades it launches are relatively new, based off the 'Vengeance' pattern Bolt Rounds which are used to punch through Traitor Astartes' armour.

Well all I was really saying is they made this weapon for the game, as it doesn't currently exist in the fluff. A regular guard grenade launcher would look silly being held by a space marine too

It's made up. It's a new weapon. You're reading too much into the name. It has nothing to do with 'Vengeance' rounds for the Bolter. It's a completely new weapon with a new type of ammunition that no Marine has ever had before. The closest we've ever got to this has been the Astartes Grenade Launcher on the Scout Bike, or perhaps the Aux Grenade Launcher, and the grenades themselves are like the stun grenades from Deathwatch. This is a new weapon.

It's not an Astartes weapon. We've known that for awhile. It's also not a "new" weapon, but is mentioned to be a modification.
Awhile back in one of the magazine articles, it was mentioned that it is an experimental weapon from the Forge World you're fighting on, and it appears to be a Kantrael pattern Grenade Launcher with a vox-system strapped on to remote detonate the grenades. You'll notice that when the grenades detonate, they release an energy discharge as well as as a conventional explosion.

I don't know if they'll go into more detail on it for 40k proper afterwards or if it will just be left as part of Space Marine.

Just Cause 2 is indeed awesome.

Anyways Space marine i think is along the same vein of Serious Sam, you have to enjoy killing lots of dudes over and over to have fun.
I personally don't like Serious Sam, but I like this game because the mythos helps get past that bit.
Personally I enjoyed JC2 more as well, and if you liked Infamous, Infamous 2 is the same but refined to the point that they actually made Zeke likeable.
