Eh, I don't think so. We're not talking about Tau pr0n here or anything. At least, those of us seriously in the topic aren't.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Seriously, though, GW simply hasn't given us a zomgbewbz Tau mini for the tabletop, so the thought has developed that either all Tau soldiers are male or there's no distinction between their genders easily visible to the untrained human eye. I'm just tossing an idea out there that might offer a good middle-ground for people who want to employ female Tau troops without needing a quarter pound of greenstuff for every mini.

No way brah, I'm all for bewbs. But lets face it, 40k gaming tables isn't the place where you're going to find boobs.

Actually I was thinking that the Water Caste probably arranges marriages/matings (diplomacy). Or the Earth Caste (genetic analysis.)

Avoiding interbreeding is not geneticly short sighted if you are breeding for certain traits. What do Fio'la need patagia and hollow bones for? Screwing in lightbulbs? What do Shas'la need with an engineering mindset? Better to specialize within the groups and generalize across the species. Your only real problem comes if a plague hits a caste that has no resistance. Oops.

Good news. This is the best time in the hobby. Full of promise. GW lets us down each time and we know it but secretly we're hoping that this is the edition that GW gives us a balanced game that can also be played competitively at tournaments. I'm loving it.

It is a pretty massive assumption, not only are the Tau a completely distinct species they evolved completely seperately, on a different planet thousands of millenia apart to humans. It would be more likely to assume that they would breed similar to the vast majority of mammals, humans are quite unique in breeding activity compared to other animals.

One must also remember that the 'evolution' of breasts in humans is very closely linked to its societal model, something that is completely different to the Tau. Tau society would probably side more along the lines of planned breeding partners (to maintain and improve the castes' abilities), so methods of attraction such as breasts would not develop/continue to develop (another intesting point about humans is that it is the females that have these features, which is well outside to norm for animals). A point that must be remembered is that assumptions can onmly go as far as the given knowledge available.

Nagashek wrote: To do otherwise implies a 6th (breeding) caste, of which no mention has been made. More fluff implies that females fight.

It wouldn't imply a 6th caste it would imply that the castes are divided into workers and breeders, the idea of a 6th caste as breeders falls done on the fact that castes are completely seperate races with their own breeding.

That could be true, but say we have an accomplished fire warrior commander such as Farsight (before he went rogue). Would the Ethereals temporarily call these commanders back to Tau or some other sept world for breeding so that the offspring may have a chance to get whatever genetical traits they inherited?

Well it doesn't have to be Tau, it could be any Tau planet or ship, and depending on how it works a Taus actual involvement could be very minor. Also the idea of soldiers returning from warzones for rest periods isn't that odd seeing as troop rotation is the most effiecient way to maintain combat strenght and moral.

I can see a squad of fire warriors being greeted by a pack of 'breeders'

Then what about Commander Shadowsun? Could breeding prevent her from partaking in battle....assuming tau females get pregnant.

If Tau carried their offspring to term inside the womb instead of in containment cells/eggs(possible even for mammals) or in a pouch like a marsupial this would lead to her most likely becoming a non-combat fire warrior for a time, but it may be in the Greater Good for her to fully operational instead of breeding.

Also it would be more likely to assume that they would see sex as a duty instead of a recreation due to the fact that humans are only part of a small number of species that have sex for pleasure as well as procreation.

Eh. 40k has never been real hard Sci fi. It's always had more in common with something like D&D then starship troopers. The tau are the most realistic army, but it seems clear that there design was meant to emulate humans.

Ergo tau have breasts, or rest like breast like devices.

Now the fact that the tau are actually 5 different tau dose open up a lot of options for verity.

My dear fellow boob lovers. Tau do not have breasts. In the Xenology book there is a picture of a bare breasted female Tau ethereal. No boobs at all. Here is a link to the book. You will have to scroll down.
