yeah, My Turrets from Combat Wombat turned up today. Casting is ok 7/10 - a little bit sloppy but nothing a little trimming and filling wont solve. The Metal Cannons on the other hand are epic 10/10 $17 for 6 including postage to the UK not a bad deal.
...but I wont be using mine...
The size seems a bit too small for my liking... lets have a look.
Spoiler:
Double turret height looks like it would work out better...
I'm gonna make my own bigger versions. Ok lets have a look at some footage... In the first photo the lazer passes in front of the xwing so it's behind the turret... a few frames later the x-wing seems to level/past the turret. The width of the turrets look like they should be a little bit smaler than the width of an X-wing. FFGames gencon demo turrets are not very big either.. but are about 20-30%taller than combat wombats. I don't care I'm gonna make bigger than both FFG and Combat wombat... The turret of mine will be a tad shorter than the width of a x-wing. so about 20-25mm and the base size the same as the a x-wing miniature about 40mm...
Ok a a couple of photos for detail and shape.
The Turret needs a little more height so it's more square. Time to hobby up!
Panic...

yeah,
I decided not to use the Turrets from Combat Wombat : (
And make my own Bigger Turrets.
Using Plastic Card around a 40mm base for the bottom shape and a 20mm for the top turret.
Tall enough to hide behind Very happy with It.
Excited! Tomorrow detailing the surfaces and then hopefully making a silicone mold..
The plan is to be Casting up a set of 6 or so by the end of the week.
All turrets ever should have a smile like that one.

Hallmark Flight Mode (the mode that maters during games!) Length 75mm Height 122mm Width 120mm
Using Force.nets measurements converted to FFGs X-Wing 1/270 scale; In Flight mode the miniature should be. Length: 67mm........................ Hallmark Shuttle is 75mm - 8 mm too long - 11.9% Height: 115 mm wings down.... Hallmark Shuttle is 122mm - 7 mm too tall - 6% Width: 118 mm wings down..... Hallmark Shuttle is 120mm - 2 mm too wide - 1.6%
There are other sources that vary the measurements, but the force.nets seemed the most accurate.
I do believe that this is as close as we are getting until FFG release their version! Plus this one lights up and played the imperial March... Winning!

I think FFG will be releasing one pretty soon, as I recall someone saw one at GenCon and remarked that they were surprised at how large it was, so this one is probably exactly right.

This is the first I've heard of anyone seeing one. I know a lot of people made the 'surprised how large it was' comment about slave1...
But if they release one - yay!
But with wave 2 including the Falcon, Slave 1, A-wing and TieInterceptor - we won't see an official FFG Lambda for quite a while yet.
Which is a shame as it's awesome! and I think really opens up the game to more stock escort/decoy/assassinate missions.
I'm in love with this lambda, and thinking about making a wreck once I get the turrets done : )
JustinKase wrote: Your work continues to impress - really loving this table Yeah, the Hallmark ornament is just perfect for this scale (until FFG makes their own).
How tall are the tower bases and the turret tops? And what is the mm square for the top of the turrets? If you don't mind me asking
I did my working out on paper first using 2 GW bases and the height of a x-wing to decide angles... looking at the drawing I thought It looked right.
The base of the turret is a 40mm GW base with a 2mm plastic card skirt
Each bit of plastic card for the base was cut from 2mm thick card. So I cut each side 42mm wide and over lapped each time at one of the sides.
I sanded this down and gave it a second 1mm thin plastic card skirt. and sanded that down to get clean edges.
- resulting in 44mm at the bottom tappering up to 27mm at the top.
The top is a 25mm GW base with thin 1mm plastic card skirt, although this was sanded down to make the sides smooth.
resulting in it 26mm wide at the bottom up to 21mm at the top (although some sides ended up smaller than others due to sloppy cutting)...
Spoiler:
The Bottom section is hollow.
The Top section is solid filled with putty so when I can cut into it later for the gun/barrel/port/slot/gap/area things.
Progress update:
Today I drew shapes all over 'happy' and then started etching out the panels.
I got half the lower section done...

Thanks for that - any chance of a measurement of the long sides of skirts as well? Both base and turret? I'm thinking about trying this out as well
The pencil details are looking really good - you using a scribing tool to 'etch' out the panels?
You do some seriously fantastic work!
Hope you don't mind - but I posted a link to this thread in the customs forums over there - along with PeteParkerh's giant Cardboard ISD - this is a board I'd love to play on
EDIT: We have a discussion on Lambda shuttle stats going on at the A Few Maneuvers site, along with a cutout token for those that don't have the Ornament.
JustinKase wrote: Thanks for that - any chance of a measurement of the long sides of skirts as well? Both base and turret? I'm thinking about trying this out as well
I'll get those for you when I get the top rebuilt and thanx for the comments.
I finnished off the base engraved details and started thinking more about how/if the turret will move.
I decided I wanted it to move in both axis : )
So to make top to rotate I'm going to use magnets so on top of the base I drilled a recess to install a magnet.
Getting the barrels to move up and down is a bit more complicated.
I figured I needed to build the turret as the following 5 parts;
1 x lower part
1 x upper part
1 x elevating cylinders bearing bits
2 x guns
I pulling the turret apart and started a new build.
The large wheels will be encased between lower part and upper part.

Progress on mine... I've finished the structures.
I'm hoping that because the parts are not that complicated a one piece mould will work, I might have to make release slices.
I stuck the bits down on to a bit of plastic card and built a lego house.
95% white to 5% blue...
And 24 hours to wait till I know if the mold worked...
yeah, 14 hours later the mold looked ready. So I gave it a whirl and cast 2 turrets up the results were good. I then showed Sharazad how to mix resin and cast a turret.
I went and had a bath and when I came back, Sharazad had made 3 more. So now I have 6 turrets! woot! which is probably enough. Each turret uses 100g of resin.
There is a lot of clean up to be done with each one. I dont have a vacuum/pressure pot so there are lots of bubbles, which means lots of GS bubble filling! The moving cyclinders are very tight so they will need sanding down. I also have to figure out what I'm doing for gun barrels... I also had the thought of only half filing the base to make a couple of mini turrets

On some of the scale model forums they use brass tubing that is then 'belled' out on the end to add a touch of realism. Yeah, I just used the word realism about a a space turret

I really like how your destroyed ships look, and the turrets are great too.
Having played and been disappointed in WotC's Star Wars Starship Battles miniature game, I have been very interested in X-Wing since it came out.
And after seeing that the Lamba ornament that I have in my attic is the right scale for this game, I think it has moved up on my list of games to try next.

I really LOVE what you are doing with this game, showing us all how a great scenery really turns a simple game into a whole experience. I'll be watching this, that's for sure!
Our local games club is running a large game of this for christmas. I've found the star wars collector fleet blockade runner is the same scale as the ships in the boxed game for something 'bigger' to hunt at around 17".
Just needs a shorter stand making for it due to xwing being a 2d game.
Basically give it hit points to be taken out (weapons, shields etc) while one side attacks and the other defends.
More stuff done today. I can cast as many turrets as I want quite quickly, the resin I'm using mixes up and sets within 5 mins although I give it another 5minutes... I cast 6 more turrets and then I destroyed them!
Spoiler:
I Cast 3 turrets with bits of foam (saturated in vaseline) placed/stuffed into them to make them easier to break up. I also casted another three lower sections using the master and a space wedge (covered in vaseline) to create hollow turret bases.
Results. Dead Turrets!! The tops half has been blown away!
Critical hits. Turrets disabled..
Y-wing bomber squadron mission complete!?

Thanx for the list. I just found time to check it out! I love how it says the Lambda is 74mm length, that makes my Lambda perfect in length! I'd love to see the other dimentions if they are in the FFG rule book. I wonder where FFG gets it's stats from?

The starships are mostly from the Rebellion era but I have also included a few outdated models. The ships available in the base game are highlighted in green, released or announced expansions in blue. The ships in each category are sorted by size. Note that I have only added the length of the starships. The lambda shuttle, for instance, will probably be larger if you take the wingspan into account.
