I first saw the pic and went, "wow, that void shield generator is awesome!"
Then I saw the price and it became, "well, it's not that awesome..." Seems to happen more and more with GW products these days.

I guess the Void Shield Generator will sell to people who love to have Limited edition stuff for bragging rights.
But I could make a perfectly good counts-as version from leftover Cities of Death bits, for a lot less cash. Or scratch-build for even less, of course, but it wouldn't have enough skulls.

I'm not a fan of the design. Not how I pictured a generator....
Limited edition is a nice way of saying low print run. They don't anticipate they will sell that many of them so they simply wont manufacture that many of them. Calling it limited edition sound a lot better then a low interest model.
The price is probably based more on the cost of manufacturing than anything else. It may be a fairly involved kit with lots of stupid bits and that will generally drive the cost of manufacturing more then the amount of actual plastic used. Add in the already short print run and they have to increase the MSRP so they can make their margins over less units. Increase the units to bring the margins down and if the demand for the model isn't enough to sell them then you will never make your margins and have compounded the problem by over spending in manufacturing.

Didn't say it was not going to sell. Rather was talking about Japanese shops and prices, with only 1000 pieces and the overseas online market dead thanks to GW this kit won't reach this country but feel free to take my words out of context.
But I must thank GW for the great chance of building Void Generators many times cheaper and probably better looking they gave me

Yep. To try to understand the decisions of GW one need to keep two very important things in mind;
1. The designers doesn't know that the Void Shield Generator is powerful since they don't play(test) their own game.
2. GW doesn't know that players would want three of those because there is no way for their customers to communicate such a desire.
It is a failure of their "They will buy what we make"-mindset, as opposed to the much better "We make what they will buy".

Or maybe....just maybe they did listen and heard there was a problem that people were having with dimensions or needing some sort of official model as reference so they mocked up this limited print run so there are dimensions on the market.
Lets be honest, there is such demand for a void shield that they could have EASILY made it a plastic run set, however this might just be a stop gap to get a model out there. It is a giant chunk of resin, FW style not a mainstream plastic kit, which we have seen they have been moving away from for over a year.
Is it probably for business reasons? Sure, but it provides the community something that it needed for reference. I will give them credit for that. Also by making it limited the hobbyist in all of us can now go wild but with guidance. We are already seeing in this thread people making plans to build one now that they have an idea.

So what you're saying is that they know people wanted to make one, so decided to tell everyone how big it should be, so other companies can go and make their own version?
Does not compute.

Who said anything about that? I am saying they saw a need, however were not in a position to make a massive production run. People were going to be making their own anyway but they also saw that people were looking for guidance. So they provided it while at the same time making a little money on the side and filling a release window.
Honestly if it was main production one at that price I would still buy it because it looks cool and would totally be worth 75(after discount) bucks to add to my battlefield terrain collection. But now that I know what it looks like I can start planning my own probably based around vortex grenade templates.
I wont be able to buy this unfortunately but even though I cant this release has given me(and the community) something we had been looking for and I think they should get credit for that. In the scheme of things they are not going to make as much as they EASILY could on these generators but the community is benefiting a lot.

I might go for those craters. Assuming of course that the craters shown is actually what we are getting. Remember those sharp-looking craters/battle-scars that we thought we bought? Remember the vacuum-formed mess that we actually was delivered? Well, I assumed GW learned.......their.......lesson..... Oh.... Nevermind. @Leth If GW sees a need they cannot fulfill.......they remove the need post haste. Just look at their childish handling of the aftermath of the Chapterhouse case. ...

Stone Bonkers Fabricator General
We'll find out soon enough eh.
|
I actually quite like the generator, but not at whatever horrifying price GW want for it. Not because the price will be inherently too expensive for resin terrain - when someone produces something truly incredible featuring tons of work I could never do myself, like those chaps making Mordheim/Empire-style buildings using individually dressed and assembled miniature blocks of stone, then I'll fork over - but because there's nothing in that model you couldn't do yourself with plasticard or cardboard, a tube tool, and a box of skeleton warriors.
|
I need to acquire plastic Skavenslaves, can you help?
I have a blog now, evidently. Featuring the Alternative Mordheim Model Megalist.
