Joss Whedon has already confirmed that Stark will be getting his Arc Reactor back in some fashion- but that's screen time and studio money being used to actively undo something they already used studio time and money on. I can wholly see why they'd want to exert a degree of control when building an interconnected setting. And thank The One Above All for that, because Regular Man basically neutered the character of Iron Man in every way.

Well love or hate Iron Man 3 the one thing you don't want in any connected series is contractions- it completely defeats the purpose. Black essentially destroyed Iron Man and replaced him with Robot Drone Man. We're left with a Stark who no longer carries the primary power source for his armours, which is fine because we're also introduced to real time remote control (to say nothing of AI) suits with their own power sources. Since he's committed to Pepper and she doesn't want him risking his life this is terribly convenient. At best Stark's next appearance in Avengers 2 should be from a comfy desk with his headset on controlling Drone Men who don't have to waste all that space on on a human body. They can be smaller, lighter or just dedicate the space and weight saved to arms, armour and/or power plants. Given Tony's promise to Pepper- that caused him to destron all his suits- and this remote, self powered, AI tech, there is just no good reason for Stark to get personally, physically involved.
As to Fillion and Day... eh. I like Fillion and will always have a soft spot for Captain Mal. Day has evolved into a bit of a... well nerd bait doesn't seem right but I can't think of a better description. The girl may well have acting chops (as Fillion actually does) but so far I've not seen them. If Fillion is to appear in the MCU I'd be quite happy to see it, but I'd rather him show up as an actual central figure rather than a cameo.

Unless of course and advanced AI takes over he needs to be in a suit to keep it from shooting people. Iron Man 3 certainly has its problems, but I think it was also a set up for Ultron. Considering all the post Iron Man 3 revisions I wonder how much was Shane/Downey (they are buddy buddy after all) and how much was Marvel. Even the short "Hail to the King" resets one of the major plot points of the film as well.

Oh for sure. To be fair self powered suits actually came in in Avengers with the MK7 (to fly out and catch Stark falling it needed power). The AI has always had a degree of control over the suit, mostly its secondary functions (flares, flaps, power redirection etc). And from teasers it certainly seems Ultron emerges from Stark tech in some fashion.
Ahtman wrote:Unless of course and advanced AI takes over he needs to be in a suit to keep it from shooting people. Iron Man 3 certainly has its problems, but I think it was also a set up for Ultron.
If you tie the AI into the control processes (and have no separate kill switch) you run that risk, pilot or no. We've already seem an Iron Man suit have it's pilot overridden (Vanko in IM2) by programming. A separate receiver with a kill switch would server and hey- you just emptied out a Tony Stark sized chunk of the suit- should be plenty of room. Put three in. Totally worth it if it means you don't have to risk your life facing alien invaders or carrying nukes into space. Also totally understandable if doing such things previously oh, I don't know, caused you major stress and panic. Remote piloting has got to be less stressful.
I wouldn't be surprised if IM3 had elements leaning towards A2 but I think those are more the overseers doing ('oh hey could you have Jarvis get a bit corrupt? Just to show it can happen?').

Well that's it. We know Stark will build more suits making the destruction of them nothing but a giant waste. We know he'll get his reactor back and now we have the 'big twist' undone. That's all wasted money and screen time so far as Marvel is concerned.

Maybe in 20 years. Civil War without The X-men, FF, Spidey and various other non-Marvel-Disney peripherals would be tragic, as it's only because it has such a wide and affecting scope that it's as awesome as it is as a comic.

Oh, I think they may very well be setting up to use elements from that storyline. It couldn't be as epic just because you're talking about a few 2-hour movies and not a year's worth of comic books.
But figure that with SHIELD in turmoil and its oversight being more limited, maybe fallout from the events of Avengers 2 sparks a government crackdown and a reorganization of SHIELD. Also remember that Cap 3 is probably the end of the line for Chris Evans...so don't be surprised if they kill Steve Rogers and let Bucky take over, just like in the comics.
These actors are getting older all the time (and probably less and less interested in doing Marvel movie after Marvel movie), so if you're Marvel and committed to this MCU thing, you have to think about the transition. Figure maybe Bucky Cap leads a new lineup in Avengers 3 including the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, not unlike what happened in the comics after Iron Man, Hulk and Thor left.

I can certainly see them doing something to mix up the Avengers line up before A3.
I imagine after IM3 Downey Jr is near the end of the line with Iron Man; even if he does come back, the character I think has run its course, and the thing with Ultron may well be his 'tipping point' where he hangs up the suit (or gives Rhodey an Avengers membership card).
I'm hoping that Thor 3 will bring something of an end for Thor as well. The arc between Thor and Loki will probably end in a big way, and it wouldn't surprise me if Thor was killed off/made kind of Asgard/Ragnarok happens so he's a no-show for A3.
With Vision, Witch and Quicksilver coming in A2, and Strange and possibly Warbird/Ms Marvel after that, I can't see them not finding a way to kill of a character or two. I'm just not sure Civil War would be the way to do it.

With Chris Hemsworth seemingly becoming a bigger star all the time, yeah, Thor will probably make an exit of some kind about the same time as Evans' Cap.
I forgot about Vision being in Avengers 2. Hell, maybe Wonder Man will arrive at some point.
Vision, Ms. Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man, and Bucky Cap -- there's kinda/sorta the late 70s Avengers lineup. Maybe they can "borrow" Beast and really top it off.

The point remains that even if they're both in Avengers 3, Marvel will need to move on from those actors considering the studio apparently has plans to the end of the next decade. They can kill/retire them both in Avengers 3 if they want.
