@Buttery: Yes, I agree that these interests are a draw for those who just do not quite fit in mainstream views or behaviors. That is why Goth and tabletop gaming has been fun since it goes all over the place.
I think the less than kind comments are directed like with any group to the more "extreme" elements. Radicals in any group are painful to interact with where if a little bit is "great" then tons and tons of it must be awesome!
Got a cousin into the "furry" scene and some of the stuff described to me got my hair more white. Some people are looking for a less threatening environment while others are looking... for something else.
I have been drawn to competitive "controlled" violence and for some broken reason it brings a smile to my face. I like my armies to be fanatical opposites from each other. Throwing the ponies into this environment by contrast just makes me think "the mayhem is about to get over the top".
This has been demonstrated well with the other picture posts.
I hope not too many kids reading this thread are not too traumatized.

People like what they like. I've gotten grief over playing with toys (40K). I wonder if the negative reaction is because of an over sensitivity to being judged. Their sense of masculinity is undermined because Phil brought MLP to 40k night. And the people laughing at us for playing with toys are somehow proven right because of it.
But seriously, Are Bronies any weirder than then the guy taking the time to make this picture?
When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.
.......including the fear of being seen as childish.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that most 18-40 year old men didn't sit down and decide to emulate their 4 year old sisters, daughters or nieces. Because that's creepy. It would mean a part of their brain didn't grow correctly and they're stunted.

The brain growing a bit stunted comment is pretty harsh.
BUT he is in a roundabout way commenting on something every adult male has to be very careful of:
To ALWAYS appear "respectable" especially in any environment that includes or is primarily for kids.
I stayed home and took care of my son for the first year, any idea how much the moms in a playgroup kept a close eye on me?
Guys not playing the role of "manly men" start appearing questionable to have in any proximity of kids.
Why else have an interest in child-like things than to get close to children?
You couldn't REALLY have an interest in toddler show stuff right? right?
Sometimes I can understand to go back to those simpler times can be comforting.
We all have our different forms of escapism, I like REALLY angry music because is seems soothing that the guy singing is WAY angrier than me.
You bronies I respect the difficult road you have decided to travel... just please do not ask for a hug... my control is tenuous as it is.

This is one of those threads that turned out *exactly* how you'd expect it to turn out
I kid, mostly. There's a lot of genuine, earnest social commentary here, which is refreshing. Who knew Dakka could be more level-headed about gender politics than the latest GW releases

Melissia? She is not taking part in those debates anymore, mostly, and I can totally understand why.

I'm no longer a brony. I left it outta boredom for the whole thing. I still watch the show, but not with enthusiasm like I used to, or even frequently. I tried once to start liking it agsin, but didn't care.
the reason I'm arguing is because one 1: there are some harmful comments in here about not just bronies, but other groups, not directly though.
2: sense I started really getting into sociology, I have become interested in it from a sociology stand point .
3:I don't like people being jersey to other people.
but also think about this, most bronies will likely be college aged, ever heard of quarter life crisis?
You have never been in the Off-Topic, or lately Video Game sections, have you?
I'll contact Mel.
Noooooo! Next we could talk how MLP can improve 40k rules and bring Peregrine in as well...

The only thing that really interests me about the entire Brony thing is how it manages to be such a huge focus for social rejects...Fedora Guys etc.
Other than that - I would refuse playing vs. a MLP army as it completely breaks with the game's immersion. Same as Nazi IG. As a TO, I'd ask if people attending the tournament would be okay with having such an army.

Funnily enough, I went and vended at the UK's biggest "furry" convention this weekend because I didn't know a damn thing about furry, and I thought it would be a great insight to go in feet-first. Call it expeditionary or foolhardy.
Jokes aside, I found people with a wonderfully community, and massively inclusive to boot... I took a charity collection box and folks were absolutely lovely.
But there were fringe elements that would indeed make you think twice. I suppose it's a concentrated mirror held up to broader society, with the flaws on view.
Say what you will, they were all very open about what they liked.

Glad you asked BUT this IS off topic so I will spoiler:
Spoiler:
I seem to be stuck on Industrial as a favorite but am current on other things.
"Stigmata" from Ministry is a good start.
"Violent Mood Swings" by Stabbing Westward.
"Free Your Hate" by KMFDM
"Prison Song" by System of a Down.
"Bodies" by Drowning Pool.
Anything by Disturbed
Anything by Static X
... White Zombie
... Powerman 5000
... Laibach
... Skinny Puppy
... Nine Inch Nails
... Angelspit
... Ayria
... Combichrist
... Marilyn Manson (calmer in comparision)
... Stiff Valentine
...
..
.
Anyway, some dark-wave, dub-step and stem-punk stuff has been sneaking their way in as well.
So yeah, luckily music you listen to does not sneak into "polite company" so it is pretty stealth.
The good thing is the "bronies" can go to a convention and seem OK since the voice actresses are pretty good looking.
It is all keeping up appearances and monitoring your actions... you can be as freaky as you want on the inside or with other like-minded individuals.
Though with the killer differing opinions on Dakka it is an interesting tenuous association.

As a student I started a temp job with a toy company on a Tuesday. I was told the original temp has started on the Monday but had gone home at lunchtime and called to say he would not be back. Apparently the job was too hard for him.
I was taken to the marketing department for an interview. It was explained that one their tasks, and my job, was to provide made up models of all the products to photographers who woud take photos for the shop and mail order catelogues (this was 1988 so no internet).
The range causing them the most problem was Transformers - they needed three of every model - robot, rocket and truck. But they aslo needed their GI Joes and My Liittle Pony kits done as well. They key questions were:
Could I make models?
Would I come back the next day?
As a broke student I was very glad that my years or Airfix, D&D and even some early Citadel modelling could all come into play - they were over the moon and I had a job.
I didn't enjoy the MLP stuff very much but it was the cushiest non-job I have ever had!

Thinking wayyyyy back.
Getting closer to my "mid" or probably at it now.
I think the 1/4 crisis depends on how much your parents did for you, so those times of little expectation or responsibility would be a fond memory.
As people face tougher challenges and having to learn more independent skills I could see the appeal, especially around exam time!
I had a more "survivalist" childhood (narcissist mother) so it is an awfully funny thing when life got easier moving out from the parents not harder as was threatened.
My way of saying that my understanding would be less than most.
A show that freely speaks of "love and understanding" can be helpful for many, my background is a bit more comfortable with the bleak 40k environment where if an inquisitor started talking about his feelings he would probably be shot out of fear of him being possessed.

Frankly I have no bloody idea, the whole idea is just stupid, I mean think about it.
One Universe is full of vibrant varied characters and settings, all centered around a millennia spanning saga concerning a near omnipotent regent whose gambit to defeat the gods of chaos is ruined when their OWN BELOVED FLESH AND BLOOD becomes a corrupted harbinger of the demonic. That's some heavy stuff there.
The other, as far as I can tell used to be about that, but is now just creepy corporate-driven adolescent power fantasy about fancy boys in power armor.
I notice my posts seem to bring threads to a screeching halt. Considering the content of most threads on dakka, you're welcome.

But you understand to concept of a 1/4 life crisis. Its also not about always being faced with a real world. its being faced with a bleak future. In that context, A show about ponies and rainbows could be a nice security blanket

It's pretty evenly spread from teen to mid 30s, in my experience. however the two ends where folks have most disposable income (kids and working adults) outnumber the college students purely due to free time and resources.
I suspect there's indeed an element of nostalgia to it. Embracing cartoons again, simplicity.
As an aside, this may just be the only time this image is ever vaguely relevant to a Dakka discussion.

That is mostly metal and indus, am I right? I know a few of these bands. Laibach, their old-school stuff like, say, Država, or their more recent stuff, or their funny covers of pop songs? Darkwave is cool, but hardly sounds angry. More like moody.

Personally, I think grown men 'being fan' of a cartoon for little girls is really weird. I just don't understand it. But I don't really mind them except for their need to get ponies in every other fictional universe. I know I can just ignore it, but it annoys me nonetheless. In my experience, bronies (and furries too) often are people who lag behind socially or otherwise have problems with society. At least, that much is true when I look at those of my friends who are bronies or furries.

Also, didn't the mods decree there would only be a single thread for pony related crap, stuck in off topic? Can we purge this thread's existence? From orbit? With a million nukes?

Nope. I have grown to hate fedoras, and hata in general. It all just seems to be used by those who don't wear clean decent clothes or cut their hair to appear professional.
