For me, it was never a question of functionality that caused my aversion to the unit- it was purely aesthetics. I think these are some of the worst looking models of all time... I think I voted for them in the "Dumbest models" thread. They're even worse than marine hoverbox tanks- another unit that has practical battlefield use but just looks terrible.

In another thread, I've been responding to people's insistance that Space Marine's position as the poster children of the game is due to asthetic merrit and not marketting by pointing out just how terrible these models (along with desolators) look, and that other factions (like Eldar) don't have these kinds of eyesores in their range.

Seriously. Centurions take a lot of flak, but I think they look 100x better than Supressors, Desolators, hoverbox tanks and the Mariokart. I would never buy Centurions, but if someone gave them to me as a gift I'd paint and use them. Supressors, Desolators, Mariokarts and Hovertanks? Someone would have to pay me to paint and play them, because I wouldn't do it even if they were free.

I'd say Supressors are easily saved with an old school proper jump Pack and standing on the ground. It's just a marine with autocannon then and I like my CSM with autocannons. Agreed on the others though.

As a side note, a Dark Eldar and Harlequin player in my group always despised the craftworld-look. So there are probably some people who dislike them more than Primaris.

And similarly that one Sentinel kit could build so many variants (a lot of weapons options, closed top, caged top, no top, windows open/closed, Catachan or Cadian heads etc.) and you always had quite a lot useful parts left over without the kit getting too expensive was great. And then the Powerlifters and the like and all the options you could come up with yourself...
I'm usually a "one of each model" kind of collector, but I got 7 Sentinels...

Do you have the Egg shaped Sentinels too?

I love Warhammer and so I have so many favourites.

Space Marines - Terminators - everything cool about space marines, but even more so. I think these guys are great.
Imperial Guard - Steel Legion - the gas mask and greatcoat look is great, reminds me of the factions from Rogue Trader.
Tau - Kroot, I love this range and think they look awesome. Honourable mention to Crisis Suits.
Orks - Brian Nelson Ork boyz. So modular, and they were an incredible update of the look of Orks. I've made hundreds of these and I still look forward to making more and painting them. Probably my favourite kit overall.
Tyranids - Lots of good options here but I think Hourmagaunts are my favourites. I love the motion and the look of them in huge swarms. Honourable mention to the Carnifex kit, it was incredible when it came out and still holds up imo.
Dark Eldar - the updated range is all great in my opinion but particularly the Kabalite warriors and each unit that uses their kit I think is great.
Eldar - Probably my least favourite range? I think it's still cool, but it's not my aesthetic preference. Aspect Warriors generally are cool and Striking Scorpions are probably my favourites.
Necrons - I think the Canoptec Wraiths are awesome. But the basic Necron Warriors is also an iconic design, even though it's mostly ripped off from Terminator.
Chaos Space Marines - Boring but I think Chaos Terminators are awesome.
Lost and the Damned - the plastic cultists from the 6ed starter are cool.
Daemons - All the basic lesser daemons are great designs. I also love the Plastic great unclean one.
Genestealer Cults - the female magus is an incredible model.
Ad Mech - the Tech priests with all the mechandrites are all fantastic models. I actually hate a lot of this range but the basic skitari, stalk tank and tech priests are so strong I have them all.

Squigs in all their forms should get a mention here. They are joyously mental bouncing biting beasties.

As many have pointed out Eldar are fantastic. It's hard to pick a favourite but I think Swooping Hawks should get the pick. Really glad they got a model refresh and look great.

Leman Russ Battle Tank. The design is fantastic, a perfect combo of utilitarian design, firepower and a simplified design of a tank. It gets across what it's meant to do at a glance, and the silhouette works too.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
And the sentinel, it's obviously inspired by the ATST from star wars, but on it's own it's a very unique design which, from a cursory glance you understand as a lighter armoured scout-walker you would definitely NOT want to be piloting.

I think my favourite bit about the Russ was when they got their final Epic release (the one before Legiones). At 28mm scale they look a bit too tall and top heavy, but those epic sculpts looked low slung and menacing.

Favourite concept: Mutie Raiders. Noble warriors who have been physically mutated going on a crusade against the invaders across this vast expanse of desert. Could be something out of Dune. Models were not great though.

Favourite models: BFG Imperial cruisers. Very aesthetically appealing with such a range of options.

Best is the super scary, super tiny Eldar Avatar.

I dont have an Eldar army, but I would play one if I had this guy ... I would mount him on the new Avatar's giant base though.

I'll do my favorites from each of the armies I play:
Dark Angels/Space Marines: Deathwing Knights. These guys are just amazing models, and their current rules make them feel like the inexorable force that they are, a strong bulwark against the enemy.
Tyranids: Tyranid Warriors (both flavors). This unit feels like it captures the happy medium between the swarmy small models (the various Gaunt units) and the larger monsters like the Carnifex, etc.
Imperial Knights: Questoris Knights (all variants). I've loved these ever since they were first introduced in 40k, and despite the models being over 10 years old at this point they still look great, and they've got pretty decent rules too.
Astra Militarum: Valkyrie. I love aircraft, and despite not getting much love in the current edition I like most of the aircraft in the various 40k armies, and the Valkyrie might be one of my absolute favorites of all of them.
Leagues of Votann: Hekaton Land Fortress. The Hekaton is the model that made me want to start an army of the Kin; it's just so cool!
Stormcast Eternals: Yndrasta. Yndrasta is one of the coolest hero models in any Warhammer game. She's just a total badass in the lore and in terms of model, even if she doesn't have the best rules currently.
Kruleboyz: Breakaboss on Mirebrute Troggoth. I like the idea of an Ork (sorry, Orruk) prodding a bigger creature to make it angry and hit things harder, and this guy just pulls it off perfectly. His rules are fun and also strong, and the model is pretty cool too.
Lumineth Realm-Lords: The Light of Eltharion. I don't have this model, as my collection of Lumineth is still fairly nascent, but it's very high on my list of models I want. It's just so cool! Plus the character's rules seem decently good too.
Tomb Kings of Khemri: Necrosphinx. This is the model that made me fall in love with Tomb Kings even back when WHFB was a thing (although I didn't play back then). It's just so cool. I love ancient Egyptian stuff, and this thing fits that aesthetic really well.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I'll stick purely to aesthetics as otherwise I'd be here all day.

The obvious answers in terms of 'iconic' looks (urgh what an overused word) are Space Marines and Eldar, so I won't be obvious.

For me it has to be... Genestealers!

Pleased to see a few mentions of them so far. They're pretty much the reason I got into 40k as a kid. And of course had to collect Tyranids. "Wait what there's a whole ARMY of these guys?!"

Genestealers were in Space Crusade, with zero explanation about what they were other than the name, the sculpt that was arguably the coolest in the box, and the fact that they jumped out at you from nowhere and tore your face off. (Unlike every other model on the 'alien' side they didn't move around the board as blips before you met them - they only appeared if certain cards were drawn - which made them strange and unnerving.)

Wait, I said I'd stick purely to aesthetics. Never mind.

May as well throw in a vote for the Space Crusade Dreadnought while I'm at it. Especially the Mk10 long-legged four-armed one that came in the expansion.

Anyway, I prefer the classic GS designs to the post-4th ed revisions. Speaking of which ...

 Overread wrote:

I'm going to say the 4th edition redesign of Tyranids. Just that whole moment.

The 1st generation of Tyranids were honestly neat and I liked them. Walking zoanthropes; gaunts, warriors with ribcages showing their guts and all. however by 3rd edition they were feeling rather small. However whilst there were some great models in 3rd edition - gaunts, warriors and a few others established designs that we stuck to till this day; the Tyrant, Carny and a few others took a very different direction.

I've often thought that 3rd edition almost felt like there were two Tyranid designers who operated on their own along similar lines; but created very different looks.

4th edition focused in on one style and its a style I loved then and still love now as its grown to be THE Tyranid style.

Oddly enough I didn't really like the 4th ed revamp of the Tyranids for the same reason you liked it. It made them too similar across the board.

I prefer the old 1st to 3rd ed mix of eclectic styles and body forms. Old school Tyranids in both 40K and Epic felt like the whole hungry ecosystem of a planet had upped and come at you: not just the tigers but the sharks, the pterodactyls, the giant squid and the millipedes. Very Chtorran. But Tyranids post 4th felt like a hundred breeds of dog: you have your poodles and your Great Danes and your sausage dogs, but you can see they're all basically the same stock animal. (New-new-school Tyranids have gone a bit wacko again and I like it.)

If I recall correctly, Jes Goodwin or someone else did once confirm that they only had time to properly redo about half the range in 3rd ed, so the metal creatures were a bit rushed. So 4th ed finished what 3rd started.

The 3rd ed Carnifex has grown on me--it looks a lot better with two sets of the big plastic scything talons--and the 3rd ed Raveners look absolutely psychopathic. Now there's a creature that enjoys its job.

But enough of my naysaying in this thread!

Another fave of mine is the classic Epic Reaver Titan. I even had to pose my modern Adeptus Titanicus Reaver legs in that traditional wide-splayed stance or else they just didn't look Reavery enough.

 Eilif wrote:
Original Necromunda Escher. Gorgeous Miniatures sculpted by Jes Goodwin. Very much a product of their time but they still hold up today.

The art and fluff that accompanied them was great too and though there are obviously parallels to Dark Elf Wyches, the Escher were certainly a new addition to the 40k universe.

Yep, love the classic Escher too. They came out long before Dark Eldar Wyches though (unless you meant WFB Witch Elves)?

Arguably the Escher were Warhammer Fantasy 1st ed Lustrian Amazons IN SPACE!... where they fit in a bit better, given that the laspistols and other techno-fantasy stuff in 1st ed WFB had kind of dropped out of the picture by then.

Here's one that I don't think has been mentioned yet: the old metal Warhammer Fantasy Stone Trolls. (The ones that were in the Made to Order earlier this year.) Nothing says "troll" like those trolls. You cannot possibly imagine a troll that is trollier. They are the Platonic original troll. If Plato were British.

Wazzdakka gutzmek was first introduced in 2nd ed, sporting a 2+/4++ and riding a warbike with kustom forcefield, squig fuel injectas, reinforced armour and a supercharged engine. It came equipped with 2 autocannons, a battle cannon and a grenade autolauncher. When he fired his battlecannon he moved backwards d3" from the recoil...

He was the coolest(TM) and I wish he came back.
