I like the masks.

It seems like they are trying to make the various Khaine-devoted units have masks/grotesques which are supposed to depict Khaine himself.

I maintain that I'm not spending $6/model for core. I'd just as soon track down old metal models or use 3rd party.

If I buy that box, it'll be for Sisters only, and I'd use the heads for a swap perhaps on Daemonette bodies or something just to make the most of it.

Now that being said, this is my wife's army, so all the purchases are ultimately up to her, and she said she damn well better have a Medusa painted like the little mermaid, so that's happening.

Now the question is do I shell out double the money for an LE book?

Right next to the executioners they have tall helms with a horse tail hanging from them.

Seeing as the corsairs are so cheap now compared to the warriors. I think I would rather use them if I needed more warriors.

I forgot that the capes are one piece though...i guess not.

Is it just that they did such a nice job with the dark eldar? I guess I was just expecting them to go in a different direction. I'm sure I can make better dark eldar and witch elves using the dark eldar boxes, they would be cooler and cheaper.

Gah, I'm really torn with this release, I've been needing to update my DE for some time, I've been wanting some witch elves and hoping for warriors with swords (I will not use those silly names GW has given them), now both are available but ridiculously expensive. £35 for 10 multipose models and £20 for 10 monopose models is crazy even by GW's own standards. Yes the quality is good but at that price it had better be because I can get a whole 500ish point army for Bolt Action for £35, and I'm sure anyone can figure out which is the best deal.

Oh well I guess I can shelve my ideas for completely redoing the army in favour of getting a couple of extra models and the new book. Of course if the Black Guard/Executioner and Dark Rider kits turn out to be a good price there's still the potential for some major additions.

the new WD sure makes all the minis look better than the leaked photos...
there is even a Hydra in a teal and blue scheme that looks awesome...
i have the last metal one, and it's cool, but the new plastic is impressive for its sheer size...

i think all the talk of the new Warriors has overlooked the cool weapons that come in the box...
the swords and crossbows look amazing...
one box of new Warriors will give a lot of extra weapons to jazz up the old Warriors minis, and make them look fresh...

now i'm off to read the Battle Report...

cheers

The Warriors do look better with the better quality pics & 360 view, and the assassin is cool too.

I still think the Hydra is fugly though, and the Witch Elves only having five different poses combined with the insane price sure breaks that deal in a hurry.

Btw the Warriors kit now costs 25,- euros (instead of 31,-)... still 0,56 more per model, but not as bad as initially feared.

Beautiful minis, I'm going to go ahead and buy a DE army but I sorted out my core with some cheap Corsairs bought off of ebay in anticipation of this release, I'll be patiently waiting for the next wave before deciding how big this army gets though, monsters and such will come from other companies.

That picture really puts it into perspective how expensive the GW hobby has become for me, I don't mean to be a negative ned but that pic really did make me look twice.

I still love the models, just can't afford 'em at those prices. Even at discounters it's a bit much to stomach! I can see myself spending £80 to round things off with GW minis, in all honesty.

What is funny about that is that it is £9 more expensive than buying them individually. (4x£35 (£140)+£45=£185).

Games Workshop wrote:What is the competition?

Every month we will give one lucky Hobbyist the chance to have one of their painted miniatures (or squads, or regiments...) immortalised on the Games Workshop website. We will nominate one newly released Citadel miniature (or set of miniatures) for you to paint and set a deadline for you to submit a photo of it to us. We will choose our favourite from all submissions received and add that photo to that model kit's product page on our website where it will stay for as long as that product stays in our range. From that point on, every single person who views that model on our website will see your handiwork! We'll even include your name in the photo, so everyone knows whose painting they're admiring.

Your submission will also be featured in the White Dwarf Daily blog, where we will reveal each month's winner.

This month's miniature:

This month we have chosen the mighty Dark Elves Kharibdyss/War Hydra for you to paint. You can assemble and paint your kit as either model and submit it for judging.

So what are the rules?

Please note that the full legal guidelines for this competition can be found at the end of this article.

Each month we will select a miniature, or set of miniatures, and a deadline for photo submissions. All photographs sent to us by this deadline will be entered into the competition, and we will pick our favourite as that month's winner.

The deadline for this month's competition is 23:59 (GMT) on Sunday 20th October. The winner will be granted eternal glory (and you'll be the envy of your mates).

There are some simple rules to follow:

The miniature must be assembled straight from the box. There can be no conversions, or kit-bashes using components from other kits.
The miniature(s) must be assembled on the base(s) that they are supplied with.
The miniature(s) must be fully painted, including the base.
You must include your name with your submission!

Our choice of 'favourite' is solely at our discretion, and once announced on the website our decision is final.

What picture quality do we expect?

You'll need to email us a photograph of your miniature so that we can judge the eventual winner. To help us do this you will need to do the following:

Send us the highest resolution photo possible.
All miniatures should be photographed on a white background.
Send us the raw, unedited files. You don't need to clip, or do any digital magic to your photographs.

How do I enter?

Simply send your photograph to the following email address:
team@whitedwarf.co.uk

Title your email "webstore painting competition", so that we know what it's for.

Link here

Sorry for the wall of text, but I quite like that they are starting to do this. I just wish they were not starting with the Hydra.

The legal bits for that are hilarious, esp. this bit:
By submitting an entry, you retain ownership of all rights in your photograph, but grant GW a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide licence to use, copy, edit, adapt, publish, translate, create adaptions from, make available, communicate and distribute your photograph (in whole or part) and / or incorporate it in other works in any form, media or technology now known or later developed. To the extent permitted by law you waive your moral rights in your photograph.

As Herzlos over at Warseer puts: This sort of thing normally causes outrage on photography forums; it may provide a benefit to the submitter, but it's pretty much unveiled exploitation; "do this thing we normally pay for, for free, and we'll put your name on the website!"

Can't wait to see the backlash from this.

I've always been one to give credit where it is due, and is this case, the models look great, some of the best GW have ever done in my view

But the prices...bloody hell!

£35 for ten WE?? Given the state of 8th these days, you would need at least 30 in a unit (to soak up bowfire and give the girls a chance to get into combat) so that's £105 for a unit of 30!!

I'm not sure of the points cost, but let's assume that a witch elf is 10 points = £105 for a three hundred point unit. Given that most people play 2000 point games, that is steep. Even for a small scale 1000 point game, that is steep.

£105 could get me a battle force, a bolt action army, a decent sized army for loads of game systems. Crazy, crazy prices.

You know that they are cheaper now right. They were 66 or so for 10 before the new kit.

Again, one year ago in Germany, metal Witches were cheaper than todays plastic witches.

He's talking dollars.

Okay, you asked for it (took me a while):
Witch Elves were 40$ for 10 at boxed rerelease 2008 (or 42$ if bought as unlimited 2 boxes, BTW more than 5 different poses):
http://battlereporter.blogspot.de/2008/06/new-dark-elves-spearhead-boxed-set-army.html
This is a 50% price increase as usual for GW.

BTW Black Guard looks boring and Executioneers ridiculous, like evil clowns.

i dont know if i could stomach painting 30 let alone 2000 points worth. if i ever decided to start playing fantasy again i think i would have to go for the unit fillers.

Try going skaven - you need at least 200 models for a 2000 point force. The thought of having to file and glue 200 skaven models (legs, arms, shields etc) sends a shudder down my spine. I don't know how skaven players do it...

Back OT, the models are expensive.

It takes a special kind of insanity...<ahem> I mean, dedication, to play skaven....

OT: I'm buying the book, and maybe some of the Cauldron bits once they hit the bitz dealers. But there's no way in the world I can afford those prices for troops, so I'll be hitting ebay and the like to get OOP models for my needs.

Where do you see that. I've heard this argument, but no sorceress kit is listed in the contents or shown in the pictures, besides what is already included COB kit.

Well based on the Cult of Khaine kit, it will be a rip off. You know GW charges for the convenience of one click.

I... don't understand those prices. I don't get it. Games workshop want more players playing fantasy and they have those prices? What... sort of business model are they using?

I have a decent paying job and I dont want to pay that for a Witch Elf army; what about students? What are they going to do? To buy a block of 40 Witch elves which is a pretty standard core size nowdays would cost roughly 140 pounds. For one unit which will probably net you about 250 points once you have a command and whatnot. What?

Sorry, I had to rant. If they were cheaper, I would be buying a dark elf army right now. But I cant justify that.
