Stunning paint job and the vignette base is inspired. She is not my cup of tea from a style point of view, but in terms of your paintwork it is incredible. The layering is perfect and you capture the tone. Doesn't fail to impress regardless of the subject matter.

Cheers TP - aye, she's a little out there for some folk but it's always nice to try something new and different. I had a blast working on her and building a vignette base for her too. Nice trying a different and larger scale than the usual 28mm. Just had an Inq 54mm fig arrive the other day I snapped up on ebay

Great work there Januine! Super vibey and your color choices fit the creepy asthetic of the figure. Especially on the skin. It truly is a disturbing piece. The base, goes without saying, is just fantastic. Grimy, gritty, scary. Just like a NYC emergency room hahaha....and The dripping blood. So awesome. Great job dude.

I put this up over on the Society of Fine Painters first, but thought I'd copy over to here as well, as I'm going to add to it as the paint foir the Dracosan continues. First part below is just a quick little cheap and nasty technique for getting a nice base metal down which as some depth to it rather than just a flat plain metal base. Next I'll start doing some grey armour panels which will then get chipped and weathered back to the base metal in places. As its paint being chipped away, I prefer to chip the paint back to an underneath raw metal rather than painting metal chipping on top of the painted plate if that makes sense - just seems and looks more legit and realistic. This is basically the same techniques as I used on the Thanatar a few months back

I love my metals and metallics - TMMs all the way. Bright, shiny and new metals are nice but I prefer the dirty, stained and old metals for the most parts. This works nicely as an esy way to get a good old and worn metal base to then further work on.

Base whatever it is with a black spray first (I've alwys used GWs Chaos Black spray and always found it to be top notch)
Once dry, get out your drybrushes - its fun messy time.
We're going to put down a succession of three different metallics to give a nice tarnished patina'd effect.
First up - roughly drybrush with warplock bronze - this gives a nice dark depth to the metal finish

nice and light. get in there! Wash out the drybrush thoroughly and let it dry
Next drybrushing time again, this time with ghenna's gold. This will give patches of stain, tarnish, oxydation etc etc. Dont be as thorough with this layer as before - let some of the bronze show through in places

washy washy, dry dry......drybrush the final layer with runefang steel. This will seem really too bright and shiny but it needs to be as the washes later will bring it right down.
Be quite thorough with this layer but again heavy in some places, lighter in others

Leave to totally dry and then some. Finally wash the whole thing with ye olde faithful Nuln Oil - don't be scroogey with this wash but try to avoid pooling. Even if you do get a few coffee stains here - it doesnt really matter as it just fits right in with the overall intended effect.

Once this is dry you have your base aged metal done. From here, you can add other targeted shades/washes to add further stains, grime etc - agrax and coelia are great for this.
Later some dabs of typhus corrosion into corners and lower recesses complete the fithly metal effect

Hope all of that makes sense and helps some folk out

Cheers
Jan

Next steps: (I'm just going to continue adding to this post so the whole thing is together and in one coherent read)

Base coats for the armour. This is in the livery of my homebrew Forgeworld, Achlys III - mostly dark grey with twilight blue as a secondary colour.

Base coat is 2 thin coats - Grey > Mech grey followed by Eshin Grey
Blue > Steg cale Green followed by Dark Reaper

Next we add some nice oily grimy depth and shadow with Momma's old fave - Nuln Oil. Applied quite liberally here

Next thing we'll do is lighten up the panels again in some areas and add in the highlights. But first, gotta take the dog for a haircut!! @_@

Lightened the armour panels up after the wash. As this is my first tank, I wasn;t sure how to go about it -so went with several progressively lighter layers for dry drybrushing. seems to have had the desired affect. Next will glaze the panels to soften the transitiions and reafffirm the deep shadows. The grey went from eshin grey>dawnstone>administratum grey and the blue was dark reaper>ulthuan grey. About 5/6 layers I think

Little of yummy side news. The bases I ordered from Waylaid Games finally arrived. They're from the tech range bases made by micro arts studios and they are sweet!! Casting is pretty much perfect. The few air bubbles I found are all on the bottom of the bases. The details are crisp and sharp baring a single piece of thread plate on one base. These are for the DW:O figs when I eventually get to them. Ordered 59 bases in total for £45 approx. See what you think

Cheers T. Still have a few final details I've noticed on the nurse to take care of.
With the new bases in, I'm gonna jump one of the deathwatch marines ahead and paint him up to see how he looks on the tech bases. Just finishing putting the Raven guard guy together. Sweet mercy they really are some gorgeous sculpts! Hopefully get to him later this week .....is. Working on the Dracosan today though.

Looking forward to seeing you tackle DW:O as well! The bases look neat, would be great for a Necromunda gang as well. Might have to look into them :-)

As you love your metals, have you had a chance to use the new Stormhost Silver yet? I cannot sing its praises enough.

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Cheers Az. I'm really happy how she turned out. Whole pile of new stuff went into painting her, some of it (SKIN!!!) I was a bit out of my comfort zone but that's how we learn eh??!!!
Quite like the 54mm size, so will be doing an Inq 54 fig soon. I love that whole range but damn they are hard to lay hands on these days :(

Automatically Appended Next Post:
FAst approaching the 72 hour mark of endless rain - the chang ma is here. Everything is soggy, sticky and nurgley! Have got a nice chunk of painting done though and set out my goals for this month
What I hope to be getting finished this month........well, at least as much as possible!!

The Dracosan is coming along nicely (see above a few posts for a step by step so far)

While I have really no interest in 30k, I do love the stuff that FW is coming out with for it, the SA tanks are sweet, sweet stuff and the Mechanicum stuff threatens to force me to sell my soul!

All the base I ordered for the DW:O figs arrived the other day so I decided to road test one and cracked opened the box. Raven Guard fella is up first (no prizes for guessing who'll be the last ) - gorgeous pose and sculpt. Made a wee start on him. It;s rare that I paint with base already attached! Just got the base started and made a start on the left silver arm to see how I'm going to do them.

Edit - damn auto-appended posts ><

And the rains continue!! Being Wednesday, halfday for me so came home thinking of all the stuff about the house I need to get done. Make a cuppa, sat down, turned on The IC podcast and painted the day away decided to get stuck into Edryc Setorax. So nice a fig to paint. Got his black armour done though I think it may need another light glaze ......maybe o.O

Cheers Blimy funny you should say that, once I finished, I suddenly thought - crap shouldve taken some photos along the way as some folk might find it useful. It was really just abaddon black and dawnstone blended up for the highlishts and then aba black, medium and a touch of kantor for the glaze. Lotta brushlicking though!

Freedom for brushlickers I say!
Great job on the armour, it makes my attempt at black armour look overtly heavy handed

The whole set are such great miniatures, and the sculpts a joy to paint. Certainly my favourite boxed set for years.
