Thanks Hruotland, I see from your website that you are a musician of the acoustic string school so I will take your word for it! I once learned the piano but never kept it up. The steps of painting here are simple, except for the in the detail of execution. I paint the eyes with black wash too! Steady hands are definitely required. Using wash has many advantages to speed and subtlety of painting, provided you properly prepare the surfaces and make time for drying (I find painting 2-3 models at once the most efficient way).

So, whats left to do? Strumpets face, shoes and jewelery, maybe a flower pattern on the witch/scullery maid's dress, some highlights in their hair. Maybe another thick wash of umber on the broom handle, and the apron needs more white and then some food stains.

ok this is as far as I'll get tonight.

Ok. Another long break from painting. I blame work. I swear they think I'm mad when I ask for a few less shifts. But I love my days off! I never want to grow up. Whats the point?

Anyhow. I picked up an enormous lot of junk plastic the other day. I wont show it all now as much of it needs repairs and conversions. But here's a selection I call "plastic dwarves through the ages" that I might paint today. Also this heroquest chaos warrior looks like fun. I'll do one of those classic half red half black schemes.

Keep painting, lots of fun stuff there. Classic goodness.

Drastic plastic and psycho-styrene Those were the days

Interested to see what other goodies you picked up in the haul. And classic chaos warrior!

Ah I thought they looked old. Old but good.

I've got some drastic plastic orcs, more plastic dwarves of many era's, plastic high elf with a stupidly big sword (island of blood maybe?), what I think is a talisman necromancer, goblins, horses, more horses and an enormous ogre daubed in humbrol gloss.

Lots of other bits too.

Hi dreadclaw69 and nevelon. Don't worry I've got the bills covered. Living in a shoebox and keeping an eye on the utility meters ensures I don't need to spend to much time in that Kafkaesque nightmare I call my job. But I must have gone and impressed the boss again. Its a difficult balancing act.

The dwarves have been primed white and then daubed with a mix of armour, sepia, grey and black wash in a ratio of 3:1:2:3. Just so's you know.

The next step is some pastels. These will make a great base for the washes. They are vallejo biege, sky blue, pale greyblue, pale greygreen and basic skintone. It all looks pretty bland at the moment but the subtlety and richness of colour will be added with layers of washes.

This light blue you apply to your figs on occasion is definitely my favorite paint-a-miniature-colour! - What are these dwarfs? They look like from the same series as some "lawn ornaments" I happen to own, only those are metal cast.

edit: why do I recognize my language mistakes always only after having pressed "Submit"? Were it only for me, the "Preview" function could just be nonexistent...

Well the one on the left is late nineties I think from the battle for skull pass set or something like that. The middle two are drastic plastic which is mid eighties citadel and the one on the end is the advanced heroquest dwarf.

I've added the first layer of washes to these now. No surprises here, flesh wash for skin and ginger beards, sepia for the wood and brass, umber for the leather and blond beards. And of course coloured washes for the clothes. Next up I need to think shields. Red and yellow? Hmmm

Close up view of the first shield. A classic norse design. These dwarves are definitely norse. Getting sleepy now. yawn. I've spent about 3.5 hours on them so far. Probably time to call it a day

Starting to come together nicely, look forward to seeing what else you do with the shields.

Nice colour combination. Reminds me of the older Dwarf schemes (when Marauder still existed as a separate company from Citadel), lots of white and blue on the Dwarves then

I still use those Orcs as one of my regiments. I've had them since I started back when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

They are actually before my time. I remember my dad had the skeleton horde/army which was vaguely contemporary and we helped him stick them together (my first exposure to mini's). At the time we were fascinated. I had no idea that there was a game for these little fellas I thought they were from jason and the argonaughts or something.

I've a couple of days off coming up so expect finished dwarves soon.

Well it was 69 million years ago...

Ok this morning the dwarves get a layer of armour wash on,... their armour funnily enough (and weapons, shield rims etc). Then I paint the shields - various colours too many to go into here. The blank one might get some freehand later. Horns are painted with light flesh. Everyone gets a thin layer of flesh wash (its kinda red ochre in painterly terms) all over their torsos, wooden bits and shield rims to make them look subtly dirty/rusty.

Also here is some source material for the freehand. Looks challenging, but I can always just paint a horse over it if it goes wrong. Which one would you pick? Or shall I just copy one from skyrim...

They look great, in regards to the shield I was going to say the top left pattern but without the middle bit it would look weird, so I'm going to go for the bottom left.

Top left or bottom right.

Or copy one from Skyrim We know that's just an excuse to boot it up

Great work on the vertically-challenged people.

I'd love to see how you would replicate one of those knot patterns.

A Skyrim-inspired shield design would also be nice.

The top right one I am knot sure I could do...

The others I think are doable with certain techniques, which are of course closely guarded proprietary secrets...

Nah not really. I've noticed recently that certain tricks will increase my success in freehand. Its basic stuff but might help someone starting out with freehand.

- Keep the paint wet. Sometimes I'll even use wash or ink, or just water down your paint. There is no danger of running so long as you are strict about how much paint you load the brush with. The wetness of the paint allows a smooth edge and means if it goes wrong you can wipe it off without too much trouble.
-planning. I often draw the design on a scrap of paper or in paint. It familiarizes your hand and mind with the task ahead and prevents facepalm errors of judgement such as not leaving enough room for your design..
-Holding the model right. First you've got to learn to use the hand holding the model to steady the hand holding the brush, so that relative with each other they don't move. Then you've got to be aware that the model will have to be rotated as you proceed through the design, as it is always easier to move the model than to contort your hand. The best angle is pulling the brush towards you, pushing the brush often leads to flicking and fethups.

I'll get back to it tomorrow. Had a busy day today looking at the red panda's and assorted avians at the local menagerie. Had to babysit the young relatives, very tiring even with penguins to distract them. I don't suppose red panda's are wargaming related? I got lots of cute pics.

I went with the pendent design. Here it is, this one was done with red ink, beige background and an overall umber wash to tie it together and make it dirty.

Ok the dwarves get finished - the last step is to paint the eyeballs and finish the base. Eyeballs are tricky. I think the secret is to have really steady hands and practice endlessly.

Also did this heroquest classic with a classic paint scheme.
