They look kind of jolly.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

They have a very distinct cast about the eyes that makes me think that they are elf skeletons. But that's probably just just an idiosyncrasy of 80s skeleton sculpts.

Here's some more pirates! I went crazy and added a little blood to the falchion. Getting better at stripes!

I better get some more militia. I swear there is no better kit for making randoms. I need to get some huntsmen and cannon crew for a better variety of torsos and legs as well.

That pajama top is ace

Decking looks great too.

I seem to recall 'triangular' eye sockets being quite the thing in the 80s. I definitely used to draw a lot of skulls back then, and often went triangular for a more 'evil' look for them.

Good round-up Weety. Lovely work and such a unique look you have to your models.

Militia men are all looking great. Good job on the skeletons.

The stripes are good, but maybe the blood could do with some variation in lightness (e.g. add some darker reds to the middle) to give it some natural non-uniformity.

Thanks for the comments chaps!

Its a constructive suggestion Dr H but I'm reluctant to go too bold with blood. Perhaps I will give it a go in the spirit of experimentation. Blood splatters, streaks and pools...

You don't have to get carried away and add more blood. Just deepen the colour of what is there. e.g.

See how where the blood is thinner, it's lighter. and where there is more blood (in the centre and lower areas) it's darker.

Those wolves certainly look like they need rescuing.

Yes it does help to have a picture. I see what you mean. No time to do it now, watching house. I'm pretty busy really atm, trying to get a job as deputy manager of a charity shop. Way better than working in a real shop. But I'm sure I'll have a go at the blood thing tomorrow.

I wonder if I can get away with not stripping the wolves, plastic is a pain to strip.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing Nevelon. Looking at them I know which frightens me more. But the goblins are there to give the wolves instructions on who to bite.

Well. Day off today so I may experiment with painted blood stains and glue some skeleton riders together.

Its baltic brass monkeys today. I'm wearing a massive fake fur coat and a sheepskin hat to deal with the problem without paying money to any of the hated utility companies. Not good weather for painting but I'm venturing out to get fingerless gloves in a mo so no problem!

This morning I dashed out this lovely chaos warrior. I made his sabre cat hat a polar sabre cat to fit with the weather.

I think I'll probably give him some freehand to really make him shine

Notice his furry boots... Definitely cold up in the chaos wastes. Marauders must get really chilly when they are not swinging heavy axes about and bathing in the still warm blood of their enemies.

Had a go at those bloodstains. I think maybe it needs a steeper shade gradient?

And this chaos dwarf looked like he needed a splash of blood.

Cooking curry mmmmmm. I do it the proper way, with liquidized onion and garlic fried in butter and coconut oil, and freshly ground spice. I got that tip from the local curry takeaway 'The Ganges' sadly now closed.

Love the classic Chaos warrior, was always one of my favourite miniatures back in the day - I'll admit though that I presumed the boots were chainmail when I painted mine...

That Chaos Dwarf - he has absolutely hilarious feet - they are comically HUGE

Bleddy clown shoes init. Yeah I think the sculpting staff back in them days were all drinking on the job or something. Full of character but just ever so slightly slapdash. Anyway it helps to identify the age of a model. If it looks a bit like a teenage stoner's doodle then its from the 80s, if it's got giant hands it's from the 90s.

Well enough slagging off talented sculptors. I couldn't do better, yet.

Got some pieces today. You've got to hand it to reaper, if you want something really obscure, they've got it, and if it happens to have made it to bones then it'll be cheap. My other option for NPC townsfolk is Fenryll but they are more pricey.

So I got the strumpet for a damsel in distress/lady assassin and the old woman can be a witch as she has a broom. Or she can be the cleaner. Dungeons get very dusty. Picked up the pirate to make it worthwhile postage wise. One always needs more pirates. Looking at them in the flesh I can't see any reason to hate them even though bones has had some bad press. The pirates sword is bent, but no so much I cant fix it.

I don't think I've ever seen the bones miniatures painted, even though they take up a good chunk of wall at my FLGS. I'm very curious to see how they turn out.

I'm really interested to see these painted as well, they are so cheap on ebay. If they look good painted I may have to try them.

I reckon I can make them look good. Still hacking away at the mold lines. Need a needle file. They aren't too bad but the material is very resistant to the scalpel and so its hard to get mold lines in the crook of the elbow.

I didn't much like the landlord and landlady figures, he's too fat and she is carrying an unfeasible number of pints. Well maybe its not unfeasible but it looks silly to my mind. The blacksmith and the rioting peasant have badly sculpted faces. I suppose the gravedigger and overloaded Oswald have redeeming features. It was tempting to buy the lot, but I think I got the pick of the bunch.

Its a real shame what happened to the 'woman with children' their faces where just too small to come out in bones plastic I guess.

I don't usually do pics of my basecoats but its a new materiel so might be of interest. Reaper recommend not priming so I have basecoated several layers in fairly neutral colours. The old lady has two coats of beige and coat of black wash, the strumpet two coats of light flesh and she will be getting a subtler wash treatment.

The EMpire militia is still one of my favorite kits ever. I have SOOOO many of their arms in my bitz box.

They look great, Reaper should do this for their catalogue photos, you really can't see the detail on the white minis.

I need to find a company that does appropriate fantasy legs and torso's separately so I can get more use from all those arms. Still its handy having them kicking about should an armless model need arming.

Well this is the next step. Lucy Legs gets a pink wash on the clothes and Granny ogg a nice thick coat of basic flesh on the skin. There was no need to be too neat around the eyes as I'll be going over that with a dark tone later.

I ought to have a few more steps done by now but for some reason I'm getting loads of overtime. Its not natural at this time of year I tells yah.

If you want bodies to slap bitz on Eccentric might be the way to go, their stuff is a bit basic, but cheap and new heads and arms would help a lot.

Good to see the various steps in the process.

Improvements to the blood is good. Certainly more like blood and less like he's stuck his sword in red paint.

Good job on the winter (chaos) warrior.

Thanks kid kyoto, the bowmen look especially suitable.

I was away busy for a while, trying to get that job. I failed. Back to my painting.

Next step, The witch looks younger now I've given her eyes and a mole. Also a green wash on the dress and grey wash on the apron. Legs gets some work with black ink, a sepia wash in the hair and a flesh wash

Next step, The witch has white wetblended into her apron and cap, a flesh wash, some sepia on the brush handle and I tried to pick out the whites of her eyes. Legs has red ink on her dress, white paint on the blouse and more black wash for the corset. A little lippy is applied to the lips.

Wow... watching your process step by step is amazing. You are truly a virtuoso of washes... a bit like a swedish master fiddler. They play a tune, seemingly totally effortless, I think "yeah, nice catchy tune, lets go!" Next thing "Whoah, Nelly... curse you, Benny Anderson!" Not even having reached the end of the first phrase before I have to drop the bow! Yet I feel inspired and I improve, thank you for sharing your magic with us!
