The ones in the link you posted have been converted. The heavy flamer was just a shell that went over the storm bolter. Here's another picture google turned up:

the picture reminds me of those old birthday hats
The picture got the point across. The "birthday hat" is where their indivivual bannerpole/antenna went.

So would basing all these models on 40mm bases for example work?? Or does that not work with the rules?

Having such a lovely set of miniatures, each one individual, I just can't help the thought of building them uber impressive bases

The problem with putting them on 40mm bases is that two terminators couldn't stand in adjacent squares without their bases overlapping, especially in the terminator conga-line formation.

Not going to stop me of course.

I remember when they (finally) updated the stealers that the designer notes from Jes said that the goal was to make the stealer look like it belonged in the Tyranid race (because, of course, it originally wasn't designed for that purpose).

So they made some subtle, and not so subtle changes to make the stealer feel more like a Tyranid organism.

How on earth is that on the 'negative' side? The standard D6 system from first edition is much more elegant and well designed.

The absolute WORST thing GW did to the game in 2nd edition was to ruin the ability for Terminators to stand still and continually increase their ability to hit a stealer (the 'hit' dice only effectively allowed the termie to hit on a 5+, whereas the original D6 rules allowed termies to increase this all the way to 3+ if they kept firing at the same target while standing still). And the 'jam' die is completely and utterly useless. Rolling doubles on 2D6 provides exactly the same odds but doesn't require a useless extra die to do so.

If you can't tell, I no-likey those 2nd edition hit/jam dice!

He reminds you of the stuff of bus boys and waiters at poor French restaraunts?

Going back to D6 was an amazing choice. It allows the rules to be more adaptable. It also more easily opens up the rules to being ammended for the different races.

Jervis likes to use "elegant" when describing the rule he wrote. Like rolling D6 in a box lid or "cleaning up messy rules with some cleaner", egad. Another word tainted forever.

I think that's the idea Brook.

Ok, so, anyway. Went into GW like I said I would and they had a preview copy hidden in a drawer. They had only sprayed the Genestealers, so probably were waiting to show it off only after they'd painted the models. The tiles were still in their sheets.

Anyway, had a good look at everything. The models are just fething awesome. First one I picked up was the Sergeant with the Thunder Hammer & Stormshield. Amazingly cool. Correct scale, everything is fine, they'll work in 40K and it should be easy enough to plunk them down on a 40mm base without doing any work. Librarian is ace. Assault Cannon guy is beefy. Great details on the Power Sword Sergeant.

Stealers are good. There is duplication (eg. you get two 'Stealers bursting through the floor) and then a bunch of unique ones. Brood Lord is HUGE.

Looked over all the board pieces, it's basically 1st Ed tiles plus a few extra ones from the expansions like the off-set intersection, the room that's 4 tiles deep rather than 3, and there are few more rooms than the original, which is nice. The tiles and other cards are THICK, really thick. Thicker than 1st Ed tiles. And they do have detail embossed/engraved into them, which is a nice touch.

And speaking of 1st Ed tiles, I brought one with me to check if they are compatible. The good news is that they are completely compatible. It's a bit of a tight fit, mostly due to the thickness of the new tiles, so there's a 1/2cm difference in how high they are, but that's not really an issue. Otherwise they are the same size, scale and use the same connecting jig-saw piece.

Didn't get a chance to look through the rulebooks as I had to meet a friend to see District 9 (go see that film everyone - it was heaps of fun!), but very impressed with this product. I don't mind paying retail for this because the models are truly excellent, and the board and everything looks great.

Looking at the new models, it's very evident what a great level of detail they can achieve with 3d software sculpting on the plastic models. They will know exactly the needed angles and mould considerations.

Sounds awesome, thanks for the peak HM! I'm starting to really look forward to getting this box and actually getting to play games for once.

The real question I'm sure people are wondering is: Are we ever going to be able to buy the model sprues out of the box? I always wanted to model an entire BA 1st Co.

Nice to hear! But more importantly, would the stealers fit on 25mm bases?

And has anyone that has read the rules know if there's any difference in rules between the stealers? Or at least the Broodlord?

Gothmog, if you're only doing it for the models you can always send me the rest, some extra tiles won't hurt.

If I had the money I'd buy another set for the models, but I can only buy one or my fiance will kill me.

Not sure on that. They had a piece of wood and had blu-taced all the Stealers to the piece of wood on all four sides to make spray painting really simple (good idea actually, you hold it up in front of you, spray, and turn the piece of wood), so I didn't get to handle any of them, just look at them stuck to the wood.

From what I saw I'd say some of them will as they have little in the way of grounding or contact points, some of them won't as they're on fairly big scenic bases. Can't give numbers though.

Well a bit of overhang wouldn't be too much of a problem I guess, the standard stealers are flailing their limbs around so much you can hardly ever place something in base contact with them anyway.

The d6 is a negative for me because I started playing in 2nd edition and have never seen a copy of 1st....

I like the hit/sust hit/jam/miss die. Does it "dumb down" the game, maybe. But I don't need to remember what hits on what.

And as per my sig, rolling dice with pips on them always screws me whereas symbols seem to work out ok. I know it makes no sense but this are dice and these things happen. Perhaps the dice gods purview does not extend to dice with symbols..

I guess I will get used to the new/old system too as I will likely play this thing constantly for the next few months.

Also, am I the only one that noticed in the Designers notes at the back of the rulebook that 2nd edition was not mentioned. GW is giving it the Highlander 2 treatment! (Never happened, move along!)

Never count on rolling to save your ass. More often than not, average in tight situations runs far below average.

yeah,
I agree with loki the hit/sust/miss die was good.
It's just more fun looking for the 'hits' rolling up rather than watching for the 5's or 6's!
I'm hoping they've done something better than a sustained ballistics table....

I also liked the fact that Jam dice had 5 empty sides and a Jam, you just preyed that the jam didn't come up! somehow this seemed better saying "anything but a 1" or "hope I don't get a double"

at the end of the day when dice are involved it's a game of numbers/odds/ratios, the symbols did a better job of hiding this from the player.

I can see the problems that symbol dice have with regards to modifiers e.g lightning claws +2 to your roll... but I also liked Bloodbowls Dice. to give you better chances of rolling a hit you just rolled more dice!

For every floor section you'd need atleast 2 wall sections, for the rooms 4. If GW had done this as a 3D plastic set the box would have had to be 3 or 4 time the size. That is huge. It would have been way more than $100. You'd need a $25 kit to do a single room and a small hall. 3D while cool just isn't cost effective.

I'm not sure people were expecting 3D plastic terrain, as opposed to plastic tiles, which was what I was expecting.

It may not seem like a large difference between plastic tiles and cardboard tiles, but the rumors certainly got my hopes up, since I felt that the plastic tiles would have a lot of details molded onto them, like textured grating, damaged flooring, loose wires, random shell casings, etc.
