Just wondering if you guys find it justifiable to use the old terminator models (the ones on the small bases). I have a few old models and was wondering if I should brush off an old SM army, but don't wanna be TFG. Thoughts?

Yes it is. I do.

I also use baseless rogue trader dreads.

If you're worried, rebase them. But the 40k community is pretty strongly behind the "if you own it and it's legit, it is always legit" mindset. Any advantages a terminator might get from its size and base are offset by the fact that those things work against how you're supposed to actually use them.

If anyone complains, the fault is not yours.

You are allowed to in casual games since the bases are the ones provided. However, be sure to ask a TO if you take them to a Tournament. I still use my 3rd Edition Hive Tyrant who sits pretty on her 40mm base instead of a 60mm(?) like modern ones.

Base size isn't important enough to earn a label of TFG. I wouldn't worry about that from that perspective.

Do a lot of people rebase their old models onto new ones? Just trying to figure out what to do with my 20 terminators. I don't think my local community would mine but don't wanna peeve anyone off with a pick up game.

Ih. It's pretty easy to rebase and looks better.

All my terminators are on small round bases. I also have a dreadnought on no base, imperial guard heavy weapon teams on individual bases (and the missile launchers on cavalry bases!), and greater daemons on square bases, because that's how they all came!

Woe betide anyone who tries to stop me using my classic terminators. I remember them costing me an arm and a leg back in the 90s and having to save up all my pennies just to get my hands on a few of them.

It's the same now, except you have to go hunting for pennies at Bill Gate's house.

Just like the old WG they got upgraded from 40mm to 25mm. I just put the 25mm the WG were on onto 40mm and built up the terrain around it.

Actually given its been twenty years the price of terminators has remained pretty constant. I seem to remember them being about £20-25 back in the mid nineties. You could get two in a blister for a fiver I think though. I just picked some up from a 3rd party store and they were only £21.

I use some old timey metal termies on 40mm bases but only because I got them baseless, dirt cheap from ebay, and then put them into bases themselves. Same with Abaddon, whom I usually deploy as terminator captain.

I don't understand how you can complain about someone trying to play with their models stuck on the bases they were sold with.

Progress is like a herd of pigs: everybody is interested in the produced benefits, but nobody wants to deal with all the resulting gak.

GW customers deserve every bit of outrageous princing they get.

I would say whatever base you want because IIRC the actual bases don't play that big of a roll. They're just there to hold the mini up.
With templates and such, I always looked to see if the model's center of mass was under the template rather than the base as stated in the rules, so I guess some people could possibly complain about that.
When I first started getting the new termies not that long ago, I was actually considering rebasing them on the old bases as that's what I was used to from when I played.
Also, I've heard that regular marines are getting put on slightly larger bases as well, I'm not going to do that. I like the smaller bases on mine.

We're gonna need another Timmy!

I would just glue the little bases onto the bigger bases, or get base adapters. Those older TDA are a little annoying to rebase.

Officially, GW have always said that you use whatever bases the models came on. So if an opponent has a problem with you using old terminator bases then you could point them to the new 32mm bases now being used with new releases and those replacing the 28mm ones. I'm sure most opponents would still be using 28mm ones so they would be arses if having a problem with old terminator bases and they use 28mm bases on their infantry instead of 32mm.

Do what you like; it won't make much difference.

Mine are on 40mm rounds, but I'm considering putting them on 32mm rounds, as those look more appropriate to the size of the miniature. I'm also considering putting them on 30mm squares so they're more useable with Space Hulk.

(as an aside, feel free to put them on 25mm round, square or hexagonal bases and claim "these are the bases they came with", since the Rogue Trader rules didn't care a jot, and if you mail ordered 'em, you could get whatever bases you asked for )

Are we talkin tournament or LGS playtime? Well, I don't think I've met but maybe one tournament opponent who would voice concern about it either, so I think you're probably good either way.

Same here, for where terminators on substantially larger bases are concerned. I wouldn't fault a opponent for not doing it, though.

Anyone who tells you you are TFG for using the old classics on their original bases has a seriously warped view of things.

I have no issues with people using them, they are a part of the lore of the game, after all! Although for me, I've re-purposed mine ove to being OM Inquisitors in TDA. Fits in my mind, anyway.

Do the new bases not make them look "even" smaller?
I havent tried it yet but tbh am unlikely to.

It kind of does. I based the old Termie Captain model on a 40mm base to use as a stand-in Belial when there wasn't an official model and it does kind of look lost on a bigger base. The suggestion given earlier in the thread of mounting the 25mm base on the 40mm base and then building it up with terrain/surround is a good one I think.

I rebased all of mine. They werent painted and I was mixing in some new terminators for a varied unit.

That said, watch how plasma cannons work and you will start to realize that the smaller base is actually a disadvantage.

Absolutely OK. You're not buying models with an inbuilt timeline in them, they aren't a perishable good. They should absolutely be able to be used.

Likewise, the size differences are rather minimal when it comes to actual game mechanics.

i'd be totally fine with it. i have the old flesh hounds, and all but one package came with the 40x20mm rectangles. most people think they're just chaos war hounds from fantasy, but even still, no one has given me any grief.
