I would maybe do another very very fine highlight with a little more white/grey added to the base colour. Just in a few places for it to really pop. The DP is looking awesome though buddy. Really looking forward to you finishing it.

Oh wow, thank you! Good to know Niu's such an inspiration, hehehe. Man, I'd think you'd already surpassed my painting quality.

And yeah, maybe add some ice blue to the edges of the highlights, and possibly add a touch of white to the very highest edges/corners. Still, Zahak's coming along quite nicely!

Thank you! TBH, the more I look at it the model the more I think I might have to highlight some parts of the skin too (like on the hands), even if I really wanted to avoid reworking on it.

Don't be so modest, Niu is a masterpiece, the best paintjob I've seen yet on a TS piece, and I'm far from being able to produce such a quality work.
I was thinking of highlighting with pure ice blue and a touch of white on the edges (I've used a 2/1 ice blue and regal blue for the highlights until now).
You were asking about the eyes on the right plate, they're made of press-molded Greenstuff. The original eyes are from a WoC knight shield. I can't post a tuto about it because of forum rules (but you can PM me if you're curious ).

Ahhh, cool! I didn't know if the eyes were moulded or just painted - I was thinking if they were just painted on, then hot damn! Thanks for the reply!

Hey everyone!

Here are my latest progress on Zahak:I re-worked the highlights on the armour and skin, added more gold and started to paint the wings.

I'll do the same highlights on the wings as on the armour and put gold the feathers and symbols.

what do you think?

I think he's looking awesome, Joe! Are you doing the sword's flames orange/yellow like real fire or adding in some tzeentchy colors to it?

I was thinking of doing the flames starting with a blue to end with pink. I'll use the same for my sorceror dread icon.

That could be dope. I was envisioning like a pale turquoise to a deep magenta, but I think blue to pink is essentially the same look and feel to that magical fire from Tzeentch. Excited to see more progress!

Mostly, on my phone.

Possibly the reverse? Pink to blues? Just so it's a more defined contrast against the body colour. Also, it's the reverse of a natural flame that way, which strikes me as very chaosy.

Awesome, thank you guys! I could try the pink to blue using variations, let's say Tentacle pink to warlock purple using a light red wash, then liche purple to a mix of hawk turquoise and regal blue to end with a more basic light blue (not necessarily ice blue). What do you think?

Yeah, I can see that working well. Possible take the turquoise up to green rather than at the very edges, so you get a sort of magnesium flare effect?

As I've used touches of turquoise I can mix it with white to keep a light blueish green. Have you ever painted such a magnesium flare effect? I'd love to see an example, it would be very useful!

Merci M'sieur!

Today I've worked on the wings, here are the first results:

I realize that the pic is a little darker than the original model, sorry for that.
I have painted the beetles body turquoise with a small highlight, but since the wings are nearly touching the golden line beneath, I will paint the lower parts orf the wings white, and the upper parts golden.
For the feather I'm still not sure, I might perhaps paint them in a brass colour (rather than golden) highlighted to clear metal like chainmail. What do you think?

As always, any advice or criticism is more than welcome.

Looks amazing so far! Great colors, like has been said, very crisp lines! Nice!

I think the brass to chainmail for the feathers would look nice.

Thank you guys!

I've started to paint the feathers on Monday. I first painted the lower feathers (the biggest ones) with a Vallejo brass, trying to keep a thin line of black undercoat as a separation between the feathers. It turned out that it was a lot of brass and that the lines were not regular enough to be kept.
So in order to give more contrast to the wings, I've decided to paint the inner feathers golden, and I must say I'm quite happy with the result.

After basecoating the feathers with gold and brass, I washed it with gryphonne sepia and started to highlight.
Right now I'm starting to think I might work the highlights a different way. I think I'll go for brass to gold for the lower feathers and gold to metal for the inner feathers. This way I'll get a large metallic palette on the wings without having too much variations on a single feather (which would probably end up in a dirty mess - I know my limits )

Sorry for not posting pics today, but I have a problem with my camera.
You'll probably get something more visual in the next days

Cheers!

Joe

Wow! it even looks like you blended or feathered the edges of the hard highlight color! Very cool!- Can't wait to see the feathers!
