I agree. I find it quite odd that as a company they wouldn't want people to be talking positively about what is about to be released rather than speculation about what could amount to nothing spectacular at all

ooo just popped on here to see what was being said about this mystery box, surprised at all the negativity. Anyway, insights from GW staff today:
It's an 'alien' like in the movies, well, technically not. GW will be releasing one alien for each GW on the 16th. On the 17th the first set of mystery boxes will be realeased being the first part of a hand scanner - the game? To avoid the aliens and stay alive.
Staff were also brandishing about the rumour of the fish men.
However, i do know what they know after speaking to the manager (we go back a little way and so he let me know the facts he has so far and his suspicion (which matches mine too), some is confirmination of things said before, sorry for any repetition
it's a stand alone game, however it is compatible with current ranges and will be supported
it will sell equally as well as 40K - managers comment - 'the only thing that will sell as well as 40K is more 40K!'
 box contains 3d scenary
suspected size is about that of the fortified mannor - SUSPECTED not fact (yet)
stores have been given a clue - new surround for pc point - from design it's either necromunda or space hulk, most likly space hulk.
the manager said he was 95% sure it would be space hulk, although he wouldn't mind necromunda either. Chances of it being anything else seemed a positive NO from him.
they have been told it's limited edition, however anyone who preorders is garanteed a copy - sounds very limited GW!!!!!
I'll be ordering one 9am monday - first job when i get to work.

So, after all this, it is Space Hulk, just like most people assumed it would be?
I'm guessing the 'limited edition' part will be the "3d Terrain" and possibly some metal miniatures?
Like GW couldn't have just said it IS Space Hulk, and to celebrate the 20 year anniversary and this new version, we'll be offering a limited edition box set (with all of the above extras) and then after that, you'll be able to get the 'regular' edition?
This is kinda lame.
Everyone wanted Space Hulk to begin with!
"Everything you've been told is a lie" indeed!
*****************
Also, I HOPE this will also be available via the Web for pre-order too.
As far as I can tell, there is NO GW store anywhere near me...

So long as you don't pre-order that, and pre-order any item that happens to be released a couple weeks after.
"Everything you've been told is a lie" indeed!
Yeah, pretty unimpressed. If they hadn't of tried to pretend it's a big secret I probably would've even bought a box.

Yes it will be available online to pre-order, however staff seemed very keen for people to order in store - guessing there's commission or something in it for them. They seem keen on that sort of thing quite a bit with big realeases recently.

I thought the point about the t-shirts was that only their site had the truth and sites like this know nothing, hence signing up on their one. Therefore the t-shirts have a lot to do with this in a way because if it is Space Hulk the meaning on the t-shirts is reversed onto them...

I'm not sure the t's are anything to do with it myself. Staff i know have made no indication to it. They just think it's cr~~ marketing. They try hard to sell the hobby as being a good thing with 'I'm lying to you' printed right across their chest for the customer to read. Good thinking there GW!
Edit - after reading through some earlier comments on this, with regards to who knows etc. - apparently this new thing has been developed by new people so even current developers were kept in the dark. Not sure if i believe this but could explain how only 4 people supposedly know what it is for sure, that is 4 poeple within GW itself. Apparently art and everything was outsourced..... make what you want of that.

yeah,
I wonder what 3d terrain could mean? It's pretty open?
Plastic walls everything like COD - Awesome
Card stock like the dragons tower in talisman - not so Awesome
Plastic Doors/Bulkheads like WHQ - cool.
3D plastic extras like Terminals/CATs/fueltanks/ etc would also be cool.
I was playing a amazing computer version of spacehulk I found last night, It's by teardown
It's Fan made and GW liked it but said that it can only be published via THQ who arn't interested, so it's stuck in limbo...
I normally hate piracy but in this case THQ are idiots this is a product they could sell! but wont?
Teardown are currently removing the terminators and genestealers from the game and calling it alien attack?
but you can get a copy of the terminator version here -> SPaceHulk
Panic...

I did say earlier in this thread, or the other one, that the new Space Hulk was originally going to have 3D plastic scenery but GW said they couldn't fit it in the box so they will be doing 3D cardboard scenery. This could explain the weight...

Heres my post from 2007 re Space Hulk:
New Space Hulk version in the works??
Ed Holzman (Bearcat89):
"I had the pleasure of meeting Jervis Johnson a couple of months ago at the Chaos Cup BloodBowl tournament at GW's Midwest US Headquarters "Battle Bunker". I was pleased to find out he is a great guy, and I had a very relaxed and enjoyable conversation with him. After talking a bit about BB and 40K, I brought up the subject of Space Hulk. I told him that I was a member of the Yahoo SH Group and that at times there are still heavy debated views here concerning the game. He got a slight chuckle out of that. I can not remember everything discussed, as all the BB coaches hit the bar afterwards and we were talking about tons of stuff while watching the World Series (US Baseball), drinking, that - and the nice scenery of Hooters waitresses were quite distracting....
Anyway's, here is some scoop I do remember that I wanted to share with the group here.
It seems as though GW knows that the demand and customer base is there. Basically he is pretty sure that there will be a new Space Hulk game released in the not too distant future. He said they will have to work with marketing to figure out how to put this out, as it must be known there will not be regular additional releases for it like the other Specialist Games, and will remain a stand alone game. I asked him about how they could do it reasonably as 5 Terminators now go for $50 so the 10 Terminators alone would go for $100. Then add on Genestealers and board pieces and nobody would be able to afford it. He said they would do it similar to how "Battle For Macragge", less detailed and simpler designed minis, to cut back on total overall costs. He mentioned something like that they were researching and believe that the card tile pieces will be replaced by something else (I'm drawing a blank, but he may have said plastics?). I brought up the subject that I read that the designers of 2nd edition wish that they did put the timed game play for the SM player. He agreed it adds so much to the game and said that they looked into sand timers (fairly costly), but that technology has come way down in price, that it looks like they would use a digital timer - where they could even put sounds in there as time is running out (like a heart beating fast he put it) and another sound when time is up (I'm thinking a death groan would be cool for that). He says that this timer is less of a cost from a supplier than the old sand timer. Towards the end of the conversation I said that would be really cool if they did come out with it, and the impression I got from his reactions is that it is seems that this may go through - and if so fairly soon!
So that's all I have. Who knows with GW's ever changing situation if it will indeed make its way to final production and the shelves of retailers, but I know I'll (and probably everyone here) will be getting it if it does come out."

The one box per store rumor is rubbish. Production set up and design costs are the same for 500, 5000, or 50,000 copies. No way they would make a run of 1 per store, when they can sell 10-100 per store.
1 copy per GW store makes no sense, if they are shipping them to independent stores, and I've already been told I'll get them.

Where is it mentioned to be 1 copy per wtf-box?
Maybe a "mystery" box has several copies...
Wouldnt it be a possibility to supply all the pre-orders of customers and independent-store orders,
but restrict the number of pick-up copys provided in their own stores?

As much as AoBR models are still 40K, they're still second-rate. However, considering that you get $150 of SM models along with a bitz box full of Orky goodness for like $70CDN, it's still worth it.

It comes down to more than just set up costs. Its about profit margins, if some portion of production is a limited run including things that otherwise not be included it comes more to the amount of profit necessary to justify the capital investment in product. I seriously doubt they could sell a hundred in most stores. Just because GW could hypothetically make a $99 game and sell for $100, doesn't mean they can justify doing so for $1 profit, same principle but larger investment and a smaller margin to work with if its as packed as its supposed to be. I still believe they will release a more basic, less packed in version later on. The limited production is much for the same reason GW released the really big terrain sets as limited runs.

So basically they have to make sub par figures for the box because they are normally so over priced it would be cheaper to buy the whole Space Hulk game than the plastic Terminators seperately. This is merely a result of their gross over pricing structure, making 5 plastic figures £25.

Or can you sub them for IG genestealer cultists.
One of my favorite SH releases was actually the issue of WD that brought in regular SMs in place of Terminators.

But for me, the part of the hobby that's the most fun is making each model something special. I know, I know, it's a great deal, and it's a great way to bring new people into the hobby, but you can still tell which models are AoBR and which aren't. It's just that I like the other boxes better, but I'm just too broke to get them.
But back on topic... I desperately hope that the minis aren't pre-painted. Building & painting is half the fun.

Or can you sub them for IG genestealer cultists.
One of my favorite SH releases was actually the issue of WD that brought in regular SMs in place of Terminators.
That was all done for the original version. They issued many missions in the magazine with new floor templates for you to use in your maps. There were also rules for standard marines, and traitor terminators on board the hulks. The Genestealer and Deathwing expansions gave loads of new weapons to the Marines, multi-level hulk maps, genetealer hybrids and psychic powers.
They did none of this for the second release, beside a few supporting articles in WD at the time, the original had years of support, the second had months and no expansions.
Though the plastic marines in the original Space Hulk were terrible. A thing of their time really, being such early plastics.
