... I totally underestimated you, Vit... I mean, here I thought we were "on par" at least, in terms of modelling and painting. WRONG. CLEARLY WRONG...

I LOVE it! Seriously! Dude, you can't just reveal something that awesome and say "Well, here's a peak... but I might not be able to make the deadline..."

I just saw something on the GW website with a "mermaid" figure in clear resin... in the Storms of Magic coverage section. Totally reminded me of it, albeit much cooloer.

The hair, and the loin-cloth (very tasteful, very "gentlemanly" move there, bro) are very natural... excellent conversion, all around!

Oh, and thanks for the compliments on mine, too!

-Remi

-EDIT 1- Double Post
-EDIT 2- Double removed

-EDIT 3- Oh yea... as for myself... the "water effects" have solidified and has lost all traces of its opaqueness... it's more or less a dark olive-green/evergreen sludge of a single color. Fudgecakes! Anyways, I'll be layering some blacks and dark greens to get the depth back, and then... final reveal pics!

Lol, i think you're being far too modest about your own skills!

I saw that mermaid too, would love to actually put resin in it, perhaps after its all done and ive done a few tests i can just pour it in!

I was a bit worried about how i was going to display her downstairs. If it wasnt the cloth it could have been very nsfw with lots of mecha tentacles

I will attempt to try my best to do as much as possible should the varying conditions be kind of sufficient enough.

edit: Gutting, still i hope it works out in the end.

Vit - ing I know she isn't finished by wow. When you described what you were going to do to her I was a little dubious but I'm having to retract that thought now! Brilliant! Now go plug her with wire and other bizarre mechanicus stuff....she needs some umbilicals to the machine. Oh and I think there is a mould line on the round thing near the engine in the second pic.

I like how you have edited the PMW stamp, neil made us. But I think it is a little in your face and actually detracts from the model... maybe having it a little smaller might help.

HF Izanagi - Shame about the water effect. You might just have to give it a coat of gloss varnish mixed with a few colours to break it up.

Baiyuan, Jackanory and Vit - Shame they wont be painted on time but I'd rather see something amazing than something rushed for a deadline.

Well, I regret to say I won't have mine done by the deadline. I have to go out of town for the weekend, so I won't have these precious last few days to work. I'll do my best to get pics up for at least the finished model unpainted, and hopefully can get the model painted by early next week.

Can't wait to see how everyone else's finished model look. I'm really impressed with what I've seen so far.

@Remi: It looks great Remi. I think the weathering powders add a great effect to the whole model, changes the theme of the piece for the better as well imo. Eager to see how your water effects turn out.

This is how far i've got so far, the basic shape is there now, so i'm feeling better about how its progressing. At this point i highly doubt it will be painted by midnight on Saturday, but i should definitely be able to get it built, so that'll have to do for now!!

The hair worked out exactly how i hoped it would 2 months ago! I just flipped it over and stuck the sides on the opposite side of the head. She will be getting a lot of AdMech weirdness implants.

@Vit: Great modelling, but the most ingenious part is in fact the idea to turn her hair upside down, I really didn't see that coming and it works perfectly for the floating effect! Bravo!

About my progress:
No classes today and I only had to meet one business partner, so it was basicly a day off and I found some time to hop into the best (aka only proper) donut shop in town and afterwards sat down to do some painting. I've done all the elementary steps on her hair now and I'm confident, that I'll be able to finish her... head today.
Anyway the hair worked out like I planned (namely achieving an organicly greenish/yellowish ivory color with some hints of grey and black), so I've got an up for the moment and hope it carries over to the next painting session tonight.

Cheers Baiyuan, its something i hoped would work when i heard the hair was in 3 parts, glad it has tbh.

Done more work, including fleshing out the engine section of the rear of the mnachine, and starting the shoulders. The sorceress is also getting a start. I will hold off on pics until tomorrow, where i will reveal how far i have gone.

When is the deadline? Because i fully intend to spend 15 hours doing this model tomorrow, from 9am to midnight. Do the pics have to be up by midnight, or is it enough to just have the timestamp on the camera and upload the pics on Sunday morning??

Good luck everyone!

Dude, take a chill pill... Get them up whenever you like, it's not like you would be excluded from winning the grand prize just because you're a little late. Mainly due to the fact that this is for fun and there actually is no such thing as a prize, that is.

Anyway, my can of tea and audio book are ready and waiting, so I'm off to do some painting. Have fun everybody!

Well done Vitruvian. Somehow the lady works really well in there.

Just finished my model. A few transitions on the skin corrected, deeper shading and highlights on the purple skirt, white thin layering on the scrolls to weather them. Gems on mask and gun. And a few fits of shading on the base structure.
Pictures tomorrow...

Looking forward to it, JRN... as I am to everyone else's entries!

It's been a long road, and I'm very... nearly done. I've inked up the water base to make it both shiny and darker as I've seen in my mind's eye. I've also added the wings... and they are looking quite nice! A bit of paint to the wing-bonding, some touch-ups... and tomorrow, late afternoon will be GIMP time and submission... FINALLY! It's been fun, but I've spent waaay too much time on this model... (that, and my final year of my MBA starts tomorrow... killing my hobby time yet again)

Panic - giggity giggity

Vitruvian XVII I hope her implant have gone well....enjoy your 15 hours paint fest today!....remember this is a hobby and meant to be fun....to me that sounds like an endurance test.

JRN - Pictures today

HF Izanagi - you said Gimp without sniggering....so I did it for you

Now before I go for my big reveal, I'd just like to thank Games Workshop. I know they get a lot of stick on various forums and whatnot for various reasons etc. but this summer I think they have surpassed themselves with the plastic models they have produced. The plastic character blisters have been a fantastic idea, which I was happy to learn that they are just the start of the Heroes for Warhammer range, I hope it goes well and we get some plastic characters for 40k. More specifically thanks to Brian Nelson for the superb models he designed (I'm off to buy the Nurgle Lord this morning ) I'm sorry I have the unstoppable compulsion to cut them up !

Enough of my ramblings

Just what I expected from you, Peter. Great work! Clean painting, smooth and subtile highlighting and shading, without stark contrasts, harmonious choice of colors etc. etc.
I've got to say though, that I'm really surprised by the overall mood of the paintjob, it's so much brighter and friendlier than I expected. He doesn't exactly scream radical into your face, but maybe that's because he's radical AND smart.

About tea:
I think your taking me for a tea-heathen is based on a linguistic missunderstanding. When I said "can" I was thinking of the german "Kanne" which means "teapot", so I'm not drinking tea from "tins", if that's what you thought. (Apart from Lipton Ice, but I wouldn't call that tea.)
Btw. did you know that there are only two groups of words for tea in the whole world? One is based on the indian word "chai" and the other one on the tibetan word "té". Any other words in any other language derive from those two. So english standards regarding how to drink tea aren't very meaningful in the overall perspective. I prefer chinese tea ceremonies, but you need a lot of equipment and time for it and it doesn't feel right to hold a ceremony with marrocan mint tea in a teabag.

I'm working on some PIPs, but I'm not there yet.

Here's mine, utterly disappointed with the pics...

It's been a fantastic event and I'm honored to be in this company. I think events like this epitomize the best parts of the hobby and the camaraderie and positive friendly competitiveness where everyone is looking to outdo each other.

My challenge turned btter sweet in the end...

I'm§ happy with the paint job & model but very disappointed with my camera's ability to photograph red. It's been unlike any previous hobby project+photo taking. I think those of you who've followed my work for a bit, know for a fact this tirade is very rare. Getting excited and achieving a red with so much variation (like the blue of the Legion marines really) with out it looking pink or orange anywhere, and then utter frustration trying to take photos.

I was also very happy with the face and eyes and how they visually strongly connect to his smoldering fingers. But yeah... the pic... anyway.

In fact it has been frustrating to the extent that I won't continue with the retinue until getting a proper camera, and am instead starting on the Twist Tusk, as I picked up the Thunder Tusk kit today.

Good evening, gentlemen. Beautiful, beautiful work...

@ Vit- great work... such a great model... wonderful vision, and absolutely a surprise from what we were discussing.. 10-15 pages earlier?

@ Peter- man... I gotta agree. You have a certain "smoothness" to your art... same feeling I got from your beastman-scaavy w/ the stub pistol/axe. Great overall work.

@ JRN- Wonderful, wonderful paintjob... also a smoothness, but in a very different way.

@ Neil- LOL... love it! You can bet that I'll be stealing this idea for a VC lord when I start my Fantasy army... or even as a Lord-level monster for WHQ... bet on it!

@ Migs- Very sublime colors... the red looks very different from the first one, I assume the camera? However, always a pleasure to see your work. The chipping and freehand on the cloak are top notch.

A special thanks to our esteemed hosts. Thank you both for this competition... and thanks for taking the brunt of the negative press/enmity of several Dakkaites... I'm happy that Panic's thread was just as successful as this event, and that the axe was buried for a clean competition. Panic and friends, your thread brought the competition to a whole other level for me... the work there and the ones here... definitely have a long way to go. Thanks for inviting me... especially since I barged in before asking/waiting for permission to formally enter the circle.

Anyways... onto my final entry... Unfortunately, I've not had time to put my final fluff thoughts into words, but be assured, it included shattering a merc with a jump-stop... the buzzing of his large wings scaring them into paranoia and overall downfall... ending with him sending one back with the horrifying image of him drinking the blood from an arm stump while vocalising to warn his caravan... despite him being the equivalent of a bee/vegetarian... Apologies if the coloring/brightening is off, I have NO clue how to use GIMP, no idea how to add any graphics like name, stardate, etc... and I'm being pressed to finish quickly by the wife for dinner and a movie. At least I colored the symbol!

The Finished GS Model:
Spoiler:

And a drumroll please, for my final entry:

Comments and critiques always welcome! Thanks again, esteemed hosts and participants!

Sincerely,

Remi

London.

PDH- I also didn't expect those colours but it really works. The muted blue and the soft shade of the shoulder pads let the face still draw your eye even though the skin is pale. The coat fastenings turned out really well and compliment the pistol perfectly.

JRN- I like the white weapon casing, coloured weapons are very iconic of sci-fi. I'm glad you stuck with the purple skirt, opposite the dark hair it nicely frames the torso.

Neil - Gothic horror incarnate. With the over-the-top headdress and cascading cloth I can imagine this as a special character illustration in a codex.

Migsula - The freehand looks amazing and I like the small detail of the overflowing chalice. The glow on the weapon is quite subtle and a nice contrast to the other colours. I'm still not sure if it's paint or tinted plastic. His armour isn't ostentatious and I see him as a Get the job done kind of guy but what I really love about this model is the eyes. I imagine Heretics giving up their secrets quite freely when his eyes are fixed upon them.

HF Izanagi - The worn weapons and "alien" equipment really do wonders for the scavenger image. The wings turned out great and the whole scheme looks quite natural.

Congratulations to you all and bravo for creating figures that are totally and utterly 40K

Baiyuan - Ok I'll let you off and retract the tea heathen title .

Oh the navigator is smart...it will be his fault the Inquisitor follows a dubious path....I really must continue writing their story. I wanted a naval theme to the model and while his nature might be chaotic he is working for the inquisition it is probably best not to flaunt it. The black hood (honest it is black) with white detailing gives a clue to his true master.
----------
Vitruvian XVII - Her ride has just been pimped...nice. Thanks I'm very please with the colour scheme. The shoulder armour looked terrible after I'd finished the cream...so a nice contrasting colour came out and bam it worked for me.
----------
JRN - To me she is the epitome of this project. I immediately saw a 40k character that oozes the menace and the macabre elements of the Imperium.

The chainsword is beautifully done. To me the white tries to disguise the brutality of the weapon. Nice blood splatter too.

In the previous WIP the skirt robe was a lovely red colour. Now it is a beautiful colour that reminds me of the old GW paint Fire Dragon Crimson....please share the recipe as I've been trying to replicate it for years.
----------
neil101 - Oh boy I think she wants your soul! I really like the idea that she is coming forth on a tide of daemonic robes conjured from her mind. From what I can see of her she looks nice...the red and grey skins works nicely together. If you were going to add anything I think a spot colour here and there. The tiles on the base look great btw. Not the best photograph as you say.
----------
Migs - Beautifully painted. While I can see your painting style in there the colours are totally different from what I'd have expected from you.

When I first saw him painted I didn't see radical at all. It makes a nice change from dark clothed, pale skinned evil men. On closer inspection I found him to be quite frightening... its the eyes and the face that do it. Oh and a special mention goes to the chalice dripping blood.

The robe looks amazing the free hand =I= is just wow! The white looks perfect to me.

Love the hammer head, the glowing green helps break up the sea of red. I think a dark handle might have worked better but I am being picky.

The base is beautiful, contrasts so nicely against the pristine inquisitor.

In all honesty I'm not entirely sure how to comment on the red. As red goes it looks good, highlighted with orange in places. But then at another angle it has a pink tinge to it. Then your statement about it not being orange or pink, I can imagine how frustrating the picture is for you...I want to see it in real life.

Goddamnit! Finished before the deadline, just in time for my bloody camera to die Here's a rubbish shot just as a taster, and I'll get something better up tomorrow when I borrow a friend's decent camera.

Paint job is a little sloppy I'm afraid - uni dropped a TON of work on me during the week I'd set aside for painting, which frustratingly was something they were supposed to have assigned 6 weeks ago. Was really keen to get done on time though, so 'painting week' turned into 'painting 12 hours'. Enough bitching though - hope you like, and I'll get some better shots tomorrow.

@Everyone - The stuff posted so far is looking absolutely breathtaking, seriously awe inspiring stuff. Nonetheless, I'm knackered so I'm going to bed Expect some full critique tomorrow! Will say though, this has been a fantastic competition, and I'm honoured to have been a part of it. Thanks so much to all involved

HF Izanagi - Damn! Your post wasn't there when I posted last night. I hate it when that happens. Thanks, I'm going to have to paint another scavvy soon.

Oh dude it looks good. Your GSing work is great. Totally changed the model and the pose is spot on. The cream and green skin and carapace work well together. I really like the coolness of the green with the warm edges. Oh and the speckled knees, biceps etc are a brilliant touch.

If I have one critique (but from a background perspective you've done the right thing) is I'd have given it a slightly brighter gun, possibly even just a fine edge highlight of chainmail to make it stand out a little more. I like what you've done with the white bone blade.

The wings are spot on, I like the burnt bits and the slightly cloudy nature to them....makes then look almost real.

The sludge green water base looks good too. I like the colour you've used for the barrel.
----------

Rabies - Cheers
----------

Neil - I thnk HF and Rabies said it best..she is full of the gothic horror, reminiscent of a vampire. I'd love to see her leading a force of skeletons and zombies. Oh and forgot to mention above I love the blood splatter on the PMW stamp.
-----------

Scarper - You'll have to wait for more photos before I comment then . But I can't wait to tell you that I really like the way you have weathered the bottom of the dress I hate it when lecturers do stuff like that, it happened to me on one occasion, damn it was seven years ago and I'm still bitter. Roll on more pictures because she looks great.

@Migs I can the really subtle reds you have achieved matey, i especially like the dripped stain on the cloak , impressive restraint with the palette choices too. My son likes this one the best .

@Izanagi ooh those wings are cool what are the made of? and i really like the effect of it skimming over the water , gives it a real sense of place , colors are a good choice too.

@Scarper Hey mate glad you got it in under the deadline matey, she reminds me of a nanny escaping with her prize after an over heated argument with her employers. I am intrigued by her as i am by all of your characters , all feel like they are stories , and we have been given a chance to glimpse through the window into their lives. the babies face is fantastic , first time i have ever seen a baby in 28mm , the rusty railings are rather nice too .

I'm blown away by the quality of the entries here, they each deserve more time than I have for comments!

@JRN: It's fantastic Jakob. On so many levels. I love the hair the most, you've achieved such contrast so smoothly - something I think no-one else anywhere does as well as you do. The warm base was a nice surprising punctuation on the model. And great photos too

@PDH: I was so short in my praise that I wanted to say again that I simply love it. The palette and how you've chose to paint the detail you added is spot on. LOve it.

@Scarper. the concept is my pick of the bunch. Hard as it is to make one out of this bunch. Looking forward to more pics.

@Remi, nicely done! So original and the base is stellar!

Where are the rest though? and how come so few of us finished on time??

Such a great journey. And I feel I am only walking the first part of a much grander path.

I finished really pleased with both process and final look. A few little bits will be touched with a brush one of the next days, but sticking to the original plan and forcing myself to break the code to paint a nice warm, but dark purple was a nice change from the standard black red gold I usually practice. Next up might be some street-fight barricades in the same colours as the yellow construction elements on her base. I also will have to work on some more henchmen and decide on a sinister inquisitor for her to follow.

----------------------

Migs: You might hate the way the red photographs but knowing Migs work from first hand scrutiny I can certainly appreciate the image you has created. Being a painter of much red myself I know how hard it can be to photograph. But the finished photo-image aside look your hobby-journey the past 2 months of hobby activity - You have both moved yourself and moved others I am sure.

PDH: Love the navy look of the model. Suits the built perfectly. Not that I had imagined him being blue/gold (was thinking red/gold, but I suppose that is what I always do) but the saturate subtle colours work really well.

Vit: Great model so far. The biggest project among our ranks it seems.

Neil101: GReat model. I really like the imagery - dead scary. But Some contrasts and brighter skin would make the great conversion come more in your face.

HF Izanagi: Great finish where the base set of the mini nicely. My favorite part of the model is the pale skin with the freggle-like spots. Realy nice touch of detail.

Scarper: Looks nice, but I would like to see some more angles. Photos when you're ready.

-------------------------

Great inspiration and the joy of working on a common project has really driven my work forward through both trying out new techniques, colours, and bold quick-and-dirty conversion work.

I also hold the original idea for the "friendly competition" as responsible for the alternative wizard-pimp-thread which I think looks very succesful also.
Overall - both threads have been the birthplace of really interestion conversions!

- Would it not be cool to see these models gather to fight a common foe?

I'll simply tune in with everybody else and emphasize on two points:
1. Each of the finished wizards is a piece of art in it's own right.
One could force some comments on aspects one might have done differently, but I believe there is no entry that didn't achieve it's full potential. They couldn't have been any better and I'm finding it hard to pick my favorite.

2. The whole contest was/is a great experience, that has raised the bar for future projects. More importantly it has been just as much fun to work on this, as I had expected when I initially suggested starting it to Peter. I think everybody agrees it was a unique case of a creative thinktank and I really really hope many share my desire to continue on this path and maybe add some more wizards, like Migs, PDH and I are planning to.

Ok that being said, I'd like to announce my personal (and totally inofficial) winner of the competition and that would so far be HF. While his entry to me is less breathtaking than JRN's, Migs' or PDH's work, they are well known for their incredibly good work and we've come to expect no less, than awesomeness from them. Remi's other projects are of course far from being mere average, but I think his wasp is his best work so far and that he has made the biggest improvement during this project. So kudos Remi, you've outdone yourself!

About my entry:
I feel awful! When I got online last night and saw all the cosmic work here I was really sad mine isn't ready yet.
On the other hand I'm hyped by the completely different styles we've gathered and I'm eager to add mine (which will be completely different again) to the mix, so I'll channel my disappointment into finishing the project.
I'm not even close to the finish line though. There is so frustratingly much left to do and so many things in real life that keep me from getting it done. Worst timing ever!
I hope you'll bear with me, so that when I'm finally finished in early 2036, there are still people who give a gak.
Meanwhile consider me in painting frenzy...

Scarper: "That is incredibly detailed...shows an attention to detail that goes beyond anyone you'll fight."
The Good Green: "Ok, That is incredible. Such attention to detail... I'm convinced you would benefit from a straight jacket ;~P Thanks for raising the bar."
PDH: "Yeah Bloody Baiyuan's Bloody eye for detail . Bet he doesn't sig that one"
PDH: "I'm not saying anything that you might sig against me. Made that mistake before!"
PDH: "Thanks for joining Dakka and spoiling us with your work. "

Awesome stuff, guys! I love each one, and they're all so different. The wasp looks really convincing now that it's fully done, the chick with a scroll for clothing is amazing, and regardless of the reds, the cloak on migsula's is pretty awesome.

Looking forward to seeing the chick suspended in the chamber-on-sentinel-legs get more paint, too

@ Scarper - I realized I've not seen/commented on yours yet. Beautiful work. I love the rust on the base, the wear on clothing, and that wee lil' baby the model is holding! You so crazy! I'm going to have a look back at your WIP for that arm... I can't for the life of me tell what it was made of now that it's all painted... but it looks like it fits, and that's what matters for the whole image.

@JRN and Migs - Thank you both for your comments. It's a very nice feeling to catch the eye of some of Dakka/mini painting's more renown entities. As to all our models fighting a common foe... I'd have a feeling that our three- Migs' Inq, your model (reminds me so much of a Repentia)... definitely would NOT get along. I can't wait to see the photo-shopped final... if a common foe is what ties the group together, I vote something LARGE...

@ Peter - Thanks for the comments and critiques. Looking back now... yes, I think that would have been appropriate, at least to differentiate the weapon from the whole of the model... eeengh... the work on this model will never be done... I'm still surprised no one called me out on how gak the roping of his handweapon was... that had the least amount of work done on it...

@ Neil - The plastic wings were from... erm... I think a plastic folder cover-sheet. A few pages back, Baiyuan suggested several sites and methods on how to do the wings. I was unable to do the lines of vallejo water effects for "veins" in time, but I agree that wings do complete the model. I imagine when he flies, the "sticks" move to an upward position, almost like antennae on his back before he starts buzzing those badboys for flight/high-leaps.

@Baiyuan - Thank you very much... official or unofficial, I believe we call that an "Honourable Mention", and I'm very happy to be called out as such.. First rule of engagement for me is never go into a fight thinking you're gonna lose. Makes you fight harder, even if winning is slim. Don't get me wrong- this was all in great fun... but Peter for his painting, Vit for his crafting, YOU for your weapon crafting, Neil for his prodigiousness, Scarper for his visions and crafting, Migs/Dante/JRN for their high-standard/award winning skills... this was a tall list, of which I knew I was probably on the lower end of the spectrum. But knowing I was up against such talent made me want to push it to see if I could at least match a few of you or learn a thing or two before I got a black eye... Thank you again, for both letting me in the fight club and calling me out like this.

@RiTides - Thank you very much for your compliments. I might take an overhead photo of the model, as the base is so damned dark it's hard to make out the waves and such from him bouncing the floating oil drum.

-Remi

PDH wrote:In the previous WIP the skirt robe was a lovely red colour. Now it is a beautiful colour that reminds me of the old GW paint Fire Dragon Crimson....please share the recipe as I've been trying to replicate it for years.

The Purple was something like this.
Black + Scab Red + purple ink mix for base colour.
Highlights adding elf flesh + more scab red to the mix.
Then glazes of Scabred with a little purple ink.
Finally, 2 extra bright highlights adding more elf flesh to the basecolour
and elf flesh + pure Scab red for the final highlight which is very close to pure elf flesh.
