Well, I got a message today while painting Cameron the Camper's Nurgle (he used to play Tau and just sat there camping and picking everyone off) and the message read that he needed to collect them today after work so in turn I needed to finish them all in short order! I did manage to get them all done but there are a few areas I would have liked to have spent more time on still they look good and match up with the other lot and you wouldn't notice pics are a bit rushed since I finished painting the last base 25 minutes before he got to my place and I had to set up and get snapping!

I also assembled a squad of Alpha Legion Headhunters these guys are a really sweet little detailed upgrade and I'm looking forward to having a go at painting this legion! I'll just have to work out if I want to do them a brighter or darker scheme in paint and feel.

and I got hold of some of that cracked earth GW paint and really like how it looks, I got it hoping I would like it enough to use for basing my Minotaurs and I certainly do

Could you use a darker scheme on the elite elements of the alpha Legion and lighter on the rank and file? Difficulty would be tying it all together. Or go from dark to light from head to toe?

See My Crazy Army plan here: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/521618.page#5517409

I'd think the Headhunters should trend a bit darker...but not too dark?

Maybe just a shade away from the FW scheme?

Amazing Titan, Damo. It's truly a thing of beauty. Make sure you do another photo session of the thing before you ship it off
- and maybe a couple - set it up on your SWM Tablescape board in a battle diorama so we can see it (unleashing) it's full glory on some Orks or some such. Almost enough to inspire me to work on something large myself, but I just hate assembly.

The Nurgle stuff is sublime as well. I have no idea how you can turn out so much quality stuff of that level in so short a time.

...and Alpha Legion, hey? I wonder who they could be for?

Hey guys, i'm going to share my start of the Alpha Legion the Tamiya clear paint is a new kinda beast and presents it's own unique challenges with my style, it is a much thicker paint than i'm used to and it's quite sticky off the brush, you don't want to play around once it begins to dry as you'll end up with it either wiping from your base coat or becoming gluggy on the model.

So this is the first coat of clear blue over silver.

Now the first two have a wash of Blue ink which darkens them, evens out the colour and starts shading.

next up I used the green clear and overbrushed the model to give it the shine,

So tomorrow i'll be washing blue again and using nuln oil to darken the shadows and see how the colour looks with a bit of contrast

Also started this guy today, hes going to be great fun to paint as I really love thinking about the models and what they represent and i've managed to go to some dark places while placing myself in his shoes, some places so dark not even Taylor Swift could bring me back......

Certainly gives them the signature "is it green or blue" look so far. I think they might look strange until you get some details on them.

You can thin down Tamiya clear paints with thier X-20A thinner.
I got a huge pot for about £5 from amazon.
I think its also supposed to be airbrushed rather than brush painted, this makes the stickiness easier to work with.
Nonetheless, the headhunters are looking pretty awesome and Curze is a gloriously evil model, I'm looking forward to what you do with him.

Those Alphas are off to a great start!

And though it seems as if the Tamiya is a bit of a pain in the beginning, it looks as if it will get you 'quicker' and (ha!) 'easier' to a better finish, if that makes sense?

Ohhhhh.... *that* Tamiya paint! I could have warned you about that. I've used it occasionally but never for anything like a glaze. I've used it for crystalline-hard colored surfaces.

And like magic they're finished I learnt a bit during this test and this is a level I'm happy with painting to my fairly quick standard that still looks good great colour on them even if the images can't show you the transitions between blue and green well so I upped the saturation to see if I can get them closer to accurate but you should see what I have I actually found a black wash over everything helped bring it together, darken and shade all at once then green as a highlight and silver, a troop heavy force would look sweet like this especially with some dust around the feet.

hope you like them, especially Alpharius, whoever that may be.....

Love the way the colors play across those... some bluish, some greenish. Nicely done.

I really like them!

I think I'd like them a bit more if they were a touch more 'blue' though?

Unless it is the pics?

Of course, having the Headhunters be their own color is OK too!

That would be cool. Then you could give stuff like sergeants a more "blue" armor, but a helmet that matched these guys. Terminators or other vets could have the helm and should pads the green color, etc.

I bet switching the order of when you lay down the clear colors would be all it took. Silver>Clear Green>Blue Wash>Clear Blue>finish as normal.

Just a quick reply tonight brothers but the hunters are actually more blue than green but for some reason they look greener . I did use the green as a highlight so perhaps that's where your eye goes? They certainly can be more blue but I don't want them to look like blue Marines :-) I'll see if I can get some other images to show Alph. If anyone wants to chat to me via Facebook messenger look for Oscar mallinson and my profile pic is Oscar.

So maybe I got a heap done on the night haunter! and maybe hes a wickedly cool model! I can't really convey the feeling he purveys but I took him as a real challenge for a couple of reasons, firstly it's been a while since i've painted a primarch, and secondly I really struggle with painting blue.

This led me to do a little research for something to inspire the Nerd within and I started looking at different blues and different ideas relating to the Night Lords legion, 'In midnight clad' and hunting by moonlight etc, I found some cool moody images of moonlight across water and a few of night hunts in some woods which made me look closer at what I was seeing, which was a very dark blue or black which was paired with strong highlights where the minimal light hit and that's where I went with Konrad Curze pair that with a pale face and dark eyes with a reddish tint around them and he looks suitably pained and unhinged while also suitably single minded in his purpose!

so lets have a look at him so far.

I'm not sure what to do with the two victims he comes with? how far to take them or what colour to do them to tie in and compliment the haunter? but that's tomorrows duty along with the rest of him.

Not where I should be

Beautiful work as usual. The level of highlight is perfect imo,

I am going to dare to make critique...

I could easily be my monitor, but I am getting a hint of purple on the blue, particularly the shoulder pads. Not a bad thing, just maybe me.

And if this is supposed to be a moon lite scene, (completely personal thing) I would like to see the red on the wings much darker, in moon light red absorbs all light and becomes nearly black. Not sure how you convey that but maybe a shade darker with brighter very fine highlights!

By all means tell me where to go on this, he is looking well beyond anything I could dream of as is, and as I said the highlighting on the armour is truly stunning.

In Midnight clad we come.......

I kind of needed to paint this model, I was feeling a bit flat and not really up to it after the epicness that is Dues Ex machina! I wasn't sure how to approach Konrad Curze, as I mentioned in my previous post I am not confident with painting blues, it's been ages since i've painted faces or a Primarch and I couldn't quite work out my approach on the overall feel of the chapter's theme but still make him stand out and pervade that sense of foreboding and barely restrained malice Think i've nailed it

I kept his victims very dark and made them part of the overall picture with only relevant blood spatters to tell the story, his armour really is midnight clad and the shadows are strong with an overall darker look to him.

Again, I always seem to throw up a bunch of similar pics but they are each nice in a different way with shadows and focus so don't hate too much!

Astoundingly good! Really well done! It may sound a bit pretentious but i think its the overall feel that makes this one so good for me, dark and sinister. You honestly would never know that blue isnt your favourite colour to work with, you have pulled it off perfectly.

The base as well is fantastic, its an odd thing to focus on but what colours do you use for the stone?

(Going back a bit in time, the alpha legion are incredible, i may steal your technique, and the nurgle doors made me skin crawl, in a good way.

Always leave here feeling thoroughly inspired Damo, thank you!

p.s. the reaver titan made me choke on my tea i was that amazed. it goes without saying, it is the best thing anyone has ever done, ever, on anything.
