After what's less of a "hiatus" and more of a "Decade long complete stop" I've started painting again, inspired in no small part by my Necromunda campaign against Flinty. And, as we all know, no project is ever REALLY finished - so my Press Gang can be viewed as "The Story So Far".
Time for some hangers on. I've had this guy kicking about for a LONG time, and he looks like a good choice for a Slopper.
Let's see if I can still do this painting thing.
(Incidentally - keeping Foundation paints in a shed for two years, subjected to alternating freezing and high temperatures? Does them no favours. Round pot paints from the early 90s? They're still going strong. Quick trip to GW to get some new paints was required...)

Welcome back and it looks great. If you wanted you could add some washes or some thing to add shadows in the recessed areas, but other wise looks good how it is right now.

Oh, goodness no. This is only about 30% done. It's already washed and since the photo I've added the eyes (which was an absolute SWINE to do, and required about 17 attempts) and brought up the skin tone a couple of layers for highlighting. The orange is actually washed, needs a couple more highlights. The robes are going to be white - because I've never painted "clean" white before - so that'll be a good few layers as well. Not sure what colour to make the centre of the hat and the shoes - thinking green.

No, he IN NO WAY resembles disgraced former Guilder Aurelius Tennhauser, former master of the Unpleasance Dome. There is NO BASIS to the belief that The Press Gang occasionally hire him for his underhive contacts more than his food and that his Wyrd daughter has also been seen freelancing as a local healer.
People who make such accusations have been found turned inside out in local allyways.
His name is Goldie T, proprieter of Goldie's Rat Kebabs.

Good choice on the hat. All gold was a bit overpowering and the blue helps link to the rest of the costume. Still looks a bit clean for the ubderhive, but I guess with that amount of rat based income he can hire lackeys to.get dirty for him

Cheers, dude. Yeah, he's clean because he's rich (and I've never painted white fabric before and wanted to give it a go). Plus, all my gang are pretty bright - I figure that these are gang fighters, proudly wearing their colours to show their allegiance rather than sensible people wearing as much urban camo as possible or downtrodden serfs!

And now for something completely different - Space Hulk with contrast paints!
So, here's my test 'stealer with his colour scheme (gryph hound orange and militarum green) as chosen by my painting assistants.
Contrast paints are certainly quick, but being neat will be rewarded as they don't cover other pigment very well. Came out very nicely on the Terminator helmet, though it'll need some scarlet to mitigate the chalky effect.
The colour pooling would look rubbish on flat armour panels, but on an organic beastie like this is OK. Think he needs a highlight on the orange, but the skin is good to go.
For certain uses this stuff seems great, but it's not going to replace my traditional paint. Not even for Ork skin, which I already have an pretty good recipe for.
More to follow, hopefully.

Nice stealer Graphite. At first I thought he(do Tyranids/Genestealers have genders?) was a hybrid with a penal colonist jumpsuit on, but now I see it’s his armour. Agree that from what I’ve seen so far, the contrasts seem to work better on “natural” minis. Pretty impressive for just 3 pots of paint so far!

So I'm going to call this guy finished.
I experimented with several techniques here. Contrast paints, which are nice. A home made wet pallet, which is just plain awesome for something so simple - paints didn't dry for a 24 hours, blending was very easy. And a 0.03mm thick felt tip for script on the purity seal.
All of them worked, really well. This painting business is fun isn't it!
This is my least favourite 'stealer model because he has the wrong number of arms, but there's a lot of different things to test on him, so he's certainly grown on me!

More progress!
First up, and completed in this post is my Gaslands team, Suckin' Diesel.
I tried a bunch of new techniques on them - airbrushing, sponge weathering, and weathering powder (really, really cheap eyeshadow)
The models are very, very old. Mid 1980s. My mid 1980s toy cars, in fact. The vintage seems to suit Gaslands for the Mad Max vibe more than modern cars.
Below are some WIPs
After airbrush
Touching up and detailing
Rather than trim out the windows and use wire mesh, the meshwork is an IKEA anti slip thing for rugs which has the tremendous advantage that it's really easy to cut with scissors and superglue in place.
Completed
Next up, my Necron kill team, shown completed here.
These things are OLD. Very old. Very metal.
They were the first thing I painted by airbrush, though only as a black basecoat, and found that Canned Air Is Not Very Good
So I bought a compressor with tank by the time I was doing the Gaslands stuff. Much better.
Drybrushing, however, remains the One True Technique
The guy in the centre below was the first one I painted. About 20 years ago.
Other than a bit of OSL from the gun - he's largely unchanged.
OSL is a lot more noticiable on the Immortals. This was put on by Drybrush, the One True Technique because I find airbrush OSL photos look far to overdone (and I didn't have my compressor yet ) Airbrush OSL seems to work well for miniatures which are meant to be standing in the dark, rather than on a battlefield. Might give it a go on my Space Hulk Termies.
Necrons of the time didn't have Deathmarks. However, I had a chunk of A-10 Tankbuster missile rack kicking about, so one weapon extension and a faceplate made from the lense of a Very Old Plastic Devestator later, and we're deathmarkin'
And my Lord's cloak is just drybrushed silver, then glazed with a variety of colours of Citadel Inks
Also, though it's near impossible to photograph, their weapons glow in the dark. Because why wouldn't they?
Final results - the big leaves are plastic necklace beads, and the cracked ground effect is from a coat of dark brown, a thick-ish coat of crackle medium left to dry a couple of hours, and a thin coat of light brown.
Very pleased with how it all turned out. Now... what shall I work on next...
Are you pointing at me, bug brained excavating automaton?

So... Intermission! During which I've painted all my Space Hulk 'stealers and started on my Terminators
But it was time for an experiment. I like contrast paints. They're awesome for rough, detailed things like cloth. But if you were to want to create a camouflage scheme, that would be difficult to work - you'd lose some of the advantage (speed, instant shading) as you'd either have to use several contrast paints or a layer after the contrast and then then traditional shade and highlight.
But what if you could skip that and just slather on one contrast colour? So I took my beginning of a Guard kill team (all with different heads!) and got to work with the airbrush.
I'm not very good with an airbrush, or not yet, anyway.
Turns out this doesn't matter for this technique.
So, first off get some Vallejo grey primer on the guys 'n gals. Lovely stuff, works very nicely with contrast - better than GW's rattlecans.
Then dig out some old Fenris Grey and Adeptus Battlegrey foundation paint I had lying around. Water them down, and add some areas of darker grey to the cloth. Got a bit splodgy in places due to possible excessive thining, pressure too high and inexperience with airbrushes. This is fine.
Just on the cloth though. The armour plates are going to be painted normally.
Splash on some (lots) of Militarum Green contrast and the darker greys show through quite nicely. The excessive splatter from the airbrush adds to the effect, if anything.
Quite pleased with how it's come out. Certainly pretty quick, and works quite well, I think.

More Digbugs!
These things are going to be YELLOW (The colour of the currently disassembled bot's shoulder pad - these things have so much recessed detail, it's worth painting them in sub-assemblies)
YELLOW
First attempt using Lahmian Medium rather than water to dilute paints. It's beautiful stuff, really keeps the flow properties better.
The metalwork is grimy rather than rusty - Tin Bitz with Boltgun Metal over the top in the higher areas, with Devlan Mud wash liberally applied to pull it all together. I'll add some edge highlights of Ironbreaker on areas which would actually see light once they're both assembled.

First tip - DO NOT BUILD IT COMPLETELY
Paint in sections. Leave the head off especially. The connection between the legs and the torso is such a good fit that it'll hold together while dry fitted very well, and allow you to get at a lot of the recessed detail. I left the arms of Ambot 2 until quite a long way into the painting process - once I had the depths of the model painted and shaded. Then glue them on for the highlights to that light falls the right way on them.
Also, yellow is a swine to paint smoothly. I will never start an Imperial Fists army.

So I've finished my Genestealers (and very nicely they turned out too, thanks to contrast paints)
But that's not the exciting bit. Because behold! The work of the next generation of painters:
My eldest's first miniature was a very, VERY old wolf from a Goblin chariot
And my youngest did the other one!
They both painted orcs,goblins, genestealers..
My eldest's:
My youngest's
But that was... a while ago. They've got better. Much better.
Check out the Harlequins (frequently used for Kill Team) by my eldest
and youngest
Then they wanted some battle sisters. Who can blame them? They're beautiful miniatures.
So first up is my youngest's bolter wielding sister:
And then my eldest's with storm bolter.
And then check out the flame effect on her cloak! I've never been able to get flames that look anywhere near this good.
Really, really impressed with both of them.
