Back to terrain color for a second (I have not been keeping up with Dakka Enough ). Perhaps do the enter stripe of the walkway in the cream and the edges on the green/grey. The main path being lighter would be the safe area to walk and the darker area be like a wall or caution area.

That might work, I'll have a play and see what it comes out like.

Work seems to have finally worked out this remote working thing... by organising more interactive meetings that I can't paint through. the cheek! So far this month I've managed to paint... *most* of Kal

I did manage to play with one of the pillars a little. This seems to have become my test piece and may end up being covered in gunk to hide the experiments at some point. For now... the martian basing/cracking stuff has gone onto the middle sections. I quite like this effect, but my pot seems to have gone off a bit as sometimes it cracks, other times it does nothing at all. A pot of artist's crackle should arrive at some point this week for a more consistent cracking



I caved and bought a set of the necromunda tiles so I could make a start on making something while I decide about the Ender. geeze those tiles are expensive!

The GW crackle is hit an miss to me. The more you put on the bigger the effects you'll get. Also don't mix colors into it or it will just ruin the effect. Artist crackle will be better economically in the long run.

Good luck finishing Kal - you can do it! Which Martian base are you using? I have a lot of experiments in my thread with Martian Ironearth. I had to put it on pretty thick. Also I had no issues with the one time I mixed some Abaddon Black into it - but otherwise I would concur with Theophony - even if only that it would be easier to paint it the desired colour than trying to mix it to an appropriate colour (and I would not be surprised if mixing in too much would ruin the effect).

I've got pots of both Martian things. the one that is supposed to go lumpy doesn't and the one that cracks only occasionally cracks

the intention is to undercoat the terrain, apply crackle so it sticks and then paint the terrain. A couple of thin, watered down coats have gone over the test piece nicely.

Thankfully there's not a huge amount left on Kal. Other than the sword it is mostly basing and neatening up some of the blends on his coat and face. Maybe lightening his blonde streak a bit more as it looks... wrong. Scabbs is another matter. We'll see how that goes...

Given that I clearly need encouragement on the painting front to get anything done, I've signed up to the blogger winter challenge that I did a few years back, so I'm encouraged to paint things because of *points*. Sadly there are no prizes... but still. Points! In preparation for this I've been going through the GoonHammer Necromonday articles and making sure I've built reasonable starter gangs for all of the houses. There is a month until the challenge starts, so my aim is to work out a reasonable, quick scheme for each house before it all kicks off and blitz a gang or two each month, plus a bit of terrain. That's the plan... lets see how quickly it breaks down or I get distracted. Feel free to poke/prod/challenge anything that gets painted over the next 4 months if it isn't Necromunda related, or at least seems to be slowing down the necromunda train

The Ranger crackle paste (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ranger-Crackle-Texture-Synthetic-Material/dp/B06VXZ52RG) arrived yesterday, so I carried out a quick experiment to see how it works compared to the GW stuff. At £10 a pot there is about 6 times as much in here compared to a pot of Martian Ironearth.

Test one was slap it on in a thick layer with some big blobby areas (as you would with the GW stuff) to see how big the cracks come out. The answer seems to be very big, unfortunately while drying some of the parts have dropped off as they are not adhering to the underneath paint too well. I suspect a lot more will fall off if I use a brush to paint over this.



Experiment 2 was a slightly thinner, more even layer, though there do appear to be a few thicker parts. This side seems to have only lost a few extra pieces overnight, but some areas are looking like they are only tentatively hanging on



And finally there was a very thin layer, which is a big No for the GW stuff. Here you can see that this is giving some nice cracks at a reasonable scale. My one concern with this one is they are so fine that painting over them may not keep the cracks, so that's today's experiment



In addition to this, the last few nights have seen me finish building Van Saar, Escher and Corpse Grinder gangs, so they can be undercoated and set aside for the painting challenge on Dec 20th. Next up is sorting out the unpainted bits of my GS Cult and Cawdor

Yeah, I did not have luck with the GW stuff sticking when I painted over it either. I hope the ranger stuff stays put for you and gets you the desired effect.

I too am interested to see how the experiment goes as I like using the gw crackle paint on my DG. Keep going on Kal and Scabbs, you can get it done! I really like how the grey coat turned out, the yellow really jumps out against it.

When I was doing my experiments, I had read that applying gloss varnish to the areas (and letting dry) before the crackle would help to avoid flaking. I didn't determine any difference - but then I was doing much smaller areas. Possibly worth a try?

I didn't manage to finish Scabbs as I had to create a couple of mixes for an online festival next week, but I did manage to at least get Kal finished enough. I may do some more work on him, especially the face and holsters which feels a bit too harshly highlighted, but he's usable and based

Useable? He’s fantastic. I think the highlighting works, but if you feel like toning down the holsters I won’t stop you. Urge to start Necromunda even with all the issues is growing.

Well I could have done without this afternoon... In the rush to get back into a conference call, I knocked over my paints box and the white contrast pot opened up... all over the floor *face/palm*

On the plus side, a new airbrush arrived to speed up undercoating and block painting. For some reason the old one will not consistently spray, despite being fully disassembled/cleaned/assembled/cleaned/rinse-repeat. Guess that's what you get for using a cheap one that came for free with the pump!

I may have also caved and bought some other bits and pieces that don't fit with the ongoing Necromunda work... oops! The first is one of the McFarlane Space Marines to paint up as a Red Scorpion; definitely with some 3d printed upgrades.

There's also the Clone Wars starter set coming this week that my have accidentally fallen into the shopping cart with another box of Goliaths to finish off the gang. The droids should make for some easy points in the painting challenge to try and pull ahead a little at the start. I've had my eye on it for ages and finally caved as I lovelovelove the Clone Wars cartoons and have wanted a reason to pick up some of the really nice 3d models for extra characters. These will likely end up being used for 7TV, rather than the actual game though... we shall see.

I need to get better at "That'll do" as there is always a difference between what I think I should be able to do and what I can actually do. If just him has caused that, the next few months may be a problem for you

In a bit of desk-cleaning, I finally finished Scabbs. He's mostly done with contrast paints, so I'm quite pleased with how he came out... though his shoes do look rather too clean for Scabbs! Image gallery is doing it's squashy thing, so you'll need to click through to see him properly :/

I picked up a copy of the SW Legions: Clone Wars box set as I love the cartoons and just fancied painting some clone troopers. The models are... ok? I was aware the scale was annoyingly different, but the droids can be whatever size they want in 7TV. Speaking of... the droids are not fun to stick together. Such tiny tiny pieces. Who thought it was a great idea to have the back of their head as a separate piece? I have one that is missing the back of his head as it fell off the sprue somewhere :/

Scabbs looks ratty I've been going down the imperial assault rabbit hole, and it's great but I've seen the horror of legion

If you want tiny parts, try putting together some of the Dreamforge miniatures . Lets have separate hands to actual non-heroic sized models.

Oh I have been down the Infinity path before where there are non-heroic scale metal hands. It was why I gave up infinity. Kinda wishing I hadn't bought Legion on a whim. I was going to say that'll teach me... But it really won't

Tomorrow is my last day of work for the year, so I hope to get some traction on sorting out my office a bit so I have space to move and plan out the necromunda bits. Somewhere in the last week I appear to have lost my box of Delaque in the chaos. Fingers crossed they turn up soon!

Thanks! Yesterday marked the first day of my christmas holidays (yay for not taking holiday earlier in the year!), so I spent it organising my painting backlog a big in preparation for the painting challenge that starts on the 21st.

Apart from drawing out boxes on my table to put each unit or gang into, I spent some time creating all of the bases for everyone and starting to work through everything priming in the main colour that I want things in. So far there is quite a bit on the table. There is more I'd like to paint, but for now I don't think I'll make it through everything I have planned... so we shall see how it goes.

Over the next couple of days I need to finish greenstuffing some of the squigs, assembling a starter Delaque gang and printing some extra bits and pieces for Christmas presents. Should get all of that done well before the 21st.

I spent today watching season 2 of Britannia while doing painting related things. Why did no-one mention this series? It's awesome! I can't believe how creepy Mackenzie Crook is... I need a Veran figure and some druids.

While watching that I spent the day making a whole pile of necromunda and desert bases for the upcoming challenge (about 90 in total!). I also finally got around to creating two larger bases for my Mangler squigs. I'm not a massive fan of the two squigs tied together, so instead I have two separate squigs with a bunch of chains trailing behind them, one ridden by a Knight of the Moon, Ser Gobalott. Not sure if they would be allowed in GW store games or tournaments... but as I don't really play that doesn't really matter to me

As per usual, the gallery is fuzzing the pictures when embedded in the page, but they are nice and clear in the gallery :/

They came out really nice. I thought the same thing about having the two models on one base. If I had gotten the goblin Christmas bundle and then added these later I would have split them as well. Nicely done.

I'll have to check out that show as well. I'm getting into the last season of my current show and need something new.

This morning saw the start of the Analogue Hobbies painting challenge. Given that Claire is doing a Masters degree at the moment, she'll be spending all of the holiday reading so I can get a good head start on the painting queue for this.

Unfortunately, due to the rules of engagement, I can't post pictures here on the day I post them on the challenge blog so things will be a couple of days out of sync... but today was pretty productive, seeing quite a bit get done:

- 18 Droids from Star Wars Legion
- General Grievous
- a killer robot that can be used in 7TV or as a murderbot in the Necromunda scenario
- an evil robot eye overlord
- 4 warrior robots
- 2 animated statues

I'm also about half way through a Van Saar gang...

*phew*

Not sure I can keep up that level of momentum as that was most of the really quick/easy things that I was planning on painting. From here on in it will slow down as things become more complex.

Th droid models are fiddly to put together and too large for 28mm pulp gaming... but they do look quite nice when finished.








Today was a lot of prep work, but very little finished... so I'm starting to slip in the rankings. Though to be fair I was never going to keep up with the guys that do 10mm historicals and someone managed to get a large 10mm roman army finished in a day and a half!

Still. Tomorrow I should be able to get a bunch of things finished
