Hello guys,

I read yesterday that the above prequel is in the works. Though one thing bugged me about this which is the absence of both Charlize Theron and Matt Hardy. In a nutshell the actors who were responsible for reinvigorating the Mad Max franchise are not on board. According to rumours they didn´t get along during the shoot of Fury Road but despite of this it is still a bitter pill to swallow. I am aware that for a prequel it wouldn´t make sense for both of them showing up though at least one of them could have been included but nope. I hope whoever steps next into the franchise be at least on their skill level.

Thoughts?

They could just make a stand alone movie in the Road Warrior/Fury Road universe. Why is this a pre-quel? Because pre-quels and sequels are the only things to get green lit now-a-days?

Tom Hardy (not Matt Hardy) is easily replaceable. I'm not saying he did a bad job as the Road Warrior but Charlize Theron certainly stole the show in Fury Road. Depending on how far back the prequel goes I guess it makes sense to replace her with a younger actress.

I really enjoyed Fury Road and hoped it was the start of a revival of Mad Max. That was 7 years ago though and I'm over it now, a lot of other films have grabbed my attention since then.

Pointless. If I want to watch a prequel to Fury Road I'll just watch Mad Max/Road Warrior/Thunderdome again.

Fury Road was fun to watch but the story was poorly thought out. I'd enjoy another mad max movie but not a direct sequel, as the sequel seems too obvious. The new rulers of those three "kingdoms" discover they had it all wrong and probably become the tyrants they used to hate or get wrecked. There is no happy ending there. I really like the wasteland and would like more movies exploring what or who is out there.

Fury Road may well prove to have been Bottled Lightning.

There really aren’t all that many Late Sequels, let alone Late Sequels with a new Lead Actor which turn out any good.

I’d argue it’s Fury Road, Ghostbusters Afterlife and Terminator Dark Fate are all I can think of (and I have a notoriously poor taste).

Everything about it was mind blowing. They didn’t go Budget Crazy, despite clearly having a decent one. If it could be done with physical effects, they did it with physical effects. It felt like exactly the sort of film we’d have got had the Director (who’s name I shamefully cannot recall right now) would’ve made first time around. Certainly how he’d have made Road Warrior.

Can that be replicated? Well. Sure. I guess. But it’s almost always going to lack the genuine WOW factor of its immediate predecessor.

I’m broadly up for it though.

Theron and Hardy almost punched each other out during the shooting of Fury Road (it is rumored that Theron demanded a personal bodyguard at some point, to protect herself against Hardy), and a sequel involving both of them was never a possibility.

If George Miller is still involved I'll watch anything about this universe though: sequel, prequel, reboot or whatever cast is hired I don't care, as Fury Road is my favorite action movie of the last 20 years and I trust Miller's hand. My favorite option would be a sequel with Furiosa as protagonist, so with only Theron involved other than maybe some of the other actresses from Fury Road.

We don't always agree, but when we do it is on the next Fury Road.

I don't think either one of them are required to tell this a great story in this setting, and there is no reason to call it a sequel or a prequel.

Both were worthless characters and gak actors in the movie so no loss whatsoever. It was also a pretty worthless movie overall but I guess random collages of algorithm generated action sequences are the norm these days. The only good bits were with the brides and that one war boy, it looked like actual humans wrote and acted out those scenes.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a delightful blast, but it had little to do with Max himself. From here on out they might as well just call the series "Fury Road" and be done with it.

Other than the first, Max has always been an audience cipher.

The folk he encounters aren’t his folk. He ultimately has little reason beyond personal profit or self interest to aid anyone.

What we see him do in Fury Road follows that. Sure at first he’s just wanting to be free, to get back to himself and his demons. Yet…as soon as he knows more about the situation? His inner Police Officer comes back to the fore. Protect the innocent and all that.

He’s a confused, conflicted and haunted man. Until he figures out not just that he can help, but how he can help.

I’ve gotten into the head space that Max is a mythological hero to the post-apocalyptic world, sort of like Robin Hood; any heroic story gets exaggerated and attributed to him.

When I say algorithm generated scenes I don't mean CGI, I mean the script was generated following some souless formula designed to elicit maximum dopamine or whatever, probably tested on monkeys strapped to cinema chairs and monitored to see exactly how many seconds apart explosions need to be to keep them engaged with no need for an actual plotline.

Nice hot take, but Fury Road has like a 90 on Metacritic, lol. It was a beautifully shot, conceived and edited action film. Hardly a "random collage".

I went to see a Mad Max movie. It wasn't like I had any expectations of a deep plot.

He negged the hell out of what is universally recognized as one of the best action movies n decades. It would be like someone saying the Princess Bride was alright despite the terrible acting, boring script, unfunny humor and cookie cutter action. It’s just shocking. We’re shocked.

They did spend a decade storyboarding it... Maybe shouldn't have worked with Brendan McCarthy!

Note it was designed as a universal movie that could be seen and understood with just the score.

That’s right. It’s everyone else and the genre itself that are wrong.

It's not a philosophy. Just a realistic expectation of what I was going to get from this movie.

If I had expected more? Then I'd have been disapointed.
If I'd gotten more? Then I'd have been pleasantly surprised....
