Subject: Gold in the Midden. Crap film, brilliant scene.
So here in Geek Media, we often extol the virtues of Good Films, and have a good laugh at Bad Films.
This thread is the home for a middle ground. Scenes of genuine brilliance which appeared from the utter, utter mire of their movie.
The movie needn’t necessarily be widely decried. It could be an otherwise well thought of movie you can’t stand, but you enjoyed a scene from immensely.
People that have spent a significant period of time being bored rigid by yours truly won’t be even remotely surprised at my first pick.
Because it’s the impromptu recommissioning of the USS Missouri from the frankly woeful Battleship.
Now, not only is this a genuinely fantastic scene in any movie? But the extras aboard ship are genuine USN Veterans, and according to Wikipedia they actually took the old girl out of port for a wee journey.
The follow up scenes are equally fun, spesh the broadside moment which is beyond Chef’s Kiss.
How about you, Dakka? Which scene near single handedly elevated a movie in your esteem? Ideally objectively awful movies for maximum impact, but anything goes.
Apologies to any early adopters. Wrong link entirely!

I am of course, referring to THE car chase scene. Like, I've honestly seen adult films with better plotting/writing than Bullitt, the film is so entirely built around that one scene. But what a scene it is.

Luke's lesson to Rey in the Last Jedi, or at least the slightly edited version.
it is, to my knowledge, pretty much the ONLY time in the flim canon we have an explanation of the Force and one that emphasises that death and renewal are part of the force, and seeking to prevent it is a path to the dark side.
without the slapstick bit, it really is the best scene in the whole movie, and one that genuinely shows what might have been. The Last Jedis problems run much too deep to ignore , even here (the unnessicary slapstick cut form the linked edit, for example), but this scene is genuinely good.
To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

But among the sheer mediocrity? Martin Sheen Is Stealing The Scene. Again. And so effortlessly, his outstripping skill somehow bounces off the overall mediocrity, making everyone shine.

Tron Legacy is one of those movies that has tons of fans, and I can’t wrap my mind around how. It’s not good. It’s not even bad. It’s just so difficult to care about what’s happening on the screen…it makes no sense.
I’d say the first Legendary Films Godzilla movie counts for this. 90% of the film is dreary tedium. Then there’s 10 minutes of excellent Godzilla action.
And the sequel is slated to start filming in August according to the above article from just over a month ago. Maybe we'll be lucky and it won't make "The List"

Honestly, there's like a dozen of my all time favorite Star Wars scenes in the movie. It's just very long, very awkwardly paced and full of some really terrible scenes as well.

They’ve cast Jared “but…but….” Leto. That’s a no-go scenario for me.
Not only is he an awful actor, but there are, shall we say, sprouts of the Yewtree.
Allegedly.

He's listed as one of the producers in the article.

Everything I’ve heard about Leto behind the scenes makes him sound like a massive douche who is hard to work with and might one day cause a legal and PR disaster. On screen, he’s no Chevy Chase and he’s certainly no Westley Snipes, so I can only wonder why studios keep putting him in their films.

IMHO, he's had 2 good film roles in his entire career.
Most recently was Blade Runner 2049, where he plays a massive douche (Wallace). The other one was Fight Club, where he got his face smashed good.

Have to disagree on Blade Runner 2049. He brought that movie to a standstill every time he was on screen. He sucked the energy out of every scene he was in. In my opinion he was the only bad part of that movie—but so, so bad.
As much as I bash The Last Jedi for being an AWFUL Star Wars film... remove all the Star Wars references and it's a reasonably decent sci-fi short.
Take it out of the Star Wars universe and you eliminate all the canon conflicts that make it a terrible Star Wars story. On THAT basis, it's not a bad story at all.
CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.

The live action Street Fighter movie wasn't a good movie, but every one of Raul Julia's scenes was great. Especially the "it was Tuesday" scene.

Eh, as long as you bring in the moolah you can be pretty much as desastrous as you want - Ezra Miller and that whole abduction case thing come to mind, for example. Leto is probably a giant douche by normal standards, but by hollywood scales he doesn't even register as 'hard to work with'. Also, don't discount the factor that they played up his 'crazy offscreen antics' deliberately when he played 'the most wicked, evil version of the character yet'-Joker in Suicide Squad, who knows how much of his supposed problematic stuff is just a giant game of telephone that flows back to that.

I. Can’t. Imagine. Why.
That whole arc of movies sure was something... Suicide Squad, the abysmal 'Birds of Prey', Suicide Squad: Reboot for no reason...

I've mentioned this one before. The film itself isn't bad but it's not particularly special, and is even less flattered by comparison with the first Bourne Identity.
But Tangier! What a great section. The action is amazing with tension ratcheting up until it is brutally severed. There are a number of good set pieces throughout the Bourne films but this one, buried in the middle of a so-so entry, is the best.
