Do you find GW washes are better than Vellajo? My black Vellajo wash seems to be rubbish.

Well its not actually an ink its a transparent paint, its this one http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/index.php?act=pro&pre=val_hob_mcl_trp_101_000

Not sure on Vallejo washes I don't have any, when I was doing my investigations into what paints to purchase when I started painting I found most people praised the GW washes but not the paint.

Skalk Bloodaxe wrote:That's a more complicated process than I usually put in on a piece, so I'm going to have to step up to the plate if I'm going to prove that I'm capable of better work. My most recent attempts at new scenery are a progressive improvement from where I started, but they still haunt me because what I see in my mind and what happens at the end of my paint brush are distinctly different.

And quite a shopping list. I'm going to make the investment as soon as possible and try to get the best results I can from my hobby time. I strive to provide the best tabletop I possibly can for my games, and this is another step in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing that info.

No problems skalk, I've seen the stuff in your scenery thread and it does look excellent.

Done a bit more tonight painted one of the fins on both sides.

Had a thought when I do the inside of the doors I can do some rust effect and add some weathering pigments. I don't believe you would see this on the outside but when it opens up it will become a different model so to speak.

The pod is looking great, GiraffeX! And thanks for the recipe, too. I was wondering how you did that.

As for Vallejo Smoke, tipios, I've only used it a little bit, but I like it a lot. It starts off black, but if you water it down, it turns this great, well, smoke color. And it has a terrofic effect when applied similarly as a wash.

Thanks everyone, I really need to start cracking out minis now. I have till mid July to finish painting the drop pod 2 units of 5 Wolf Guard, 5 Wolves and some objective markers.

Its not going to be easy I usually only manage to paint 10 minis a month at my speed.

Thanks tipios, its always tough competition for best painted in the events I go to so we shall see.

I'm trying to think of something for objective markers at the moment. I do like these wolf ruin bits, what do you think?

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=1338#i/2012/big/celtic_ruins_terrain_02.jpg

I wouldn't use the human statue just the wolf bits.

Thanks tipios I'll have to see if I can get them.

------------------

Ok drop pod update time the outside is 90% finished now, all done apart from the main base at the bottom which needs some smoke effect.

All the doors have been weathered and are still drying at the moment but the test one is ok to show as I did it yesterday.

Should hopefully finish it tomorrow night apart from the Storm Bolter which I'm doing along with the next Wolf Guard squad and the console which I might just leave off as it looks quite good without it.

Next up on the paint table is a 5 man Wolf Guard unit which has all the grey done and also two multi melta long fangs.

After those I have the following left

A unit of 5 Wolf Guard which are still in their box.
A unit of 5 Wolves which I'm waiting for in the post.
A multi melta replacement from FW
A Missile Launcher dude, but I keep getting outbid on ebay
3 objective markers which I've yet to order
And a chooser of the slain (well I think that's what it is, don't have codex on me) marker/model.

Deadline is 13th of July, I think I should be fine as long as I don't get side tracked. The pod was a nice distraction from painting grey terminators so its given me a bit of enthusiasm back and in the current unit I'm painting one of them is going to be a bit special.

The pod looks great, GiraffeX! i wouldn't have the courage to try all that weathering and damage.

Do you know ehat you're going to do for you chooser of the slain? Might be an opportunity for a really cool model....

Not fussed really I like to haver a variety in my Dark Wolves so it looks like they make do with what they can scavenge from the battlefield. I don't really need a dude just a Missile launcher lol.

It needed to be well weathered to match in with the Dark Wolves, I kinda just went with the flow while doing the damage/weathering. It looks really battered like I think they should after coming down through orbit into the middle of a combat zone.

For the chooser I'm going to do a tree with a blood letter coming out of it, well that's the plan anyway

I really enjoy watching people take a 'stock' codex and make it their own. Great stuff.

GX, if you PM me an address, I'll send you a missile launcher.

The pod is looking amazing. Your really know how to create a scale perspective w/ your weathering and detailing. Fantastic job.

If you don't win "best painted" I really want to see the stuff of the person tnat does.

The wolf bitz are awesome! I'm going to spend some time surfing that site. Pricy stuff for sure but if I find what I am looking for it'll be worth it.

Thanks Git's, I have some rhinos and razorbacks planned at some point in the future, hopefully I can bring some of it over to them although it will be rust and damage more akin to my Nurgle Rhinos.

Thanks I'm going to try and do this with all my armies. I want them to be more than just the models, I'm trying to make the bases come alive with them so the army has a very unique look. I have some great ideas for quite a few more armies to come.

PM sent

Thanks Skalk I'd really like to try to get best painted with these guys I've put so much effort into them.

The wolf bits are nice but as you say they are expensive, I'm trying to get one of the UK mail order companys to pick some up for me.

Amazing fact of the day, well for me anyway. My k button on my keyboard is working, first time since last year. Hopefully thats the end of having to copy and paste it everytime

... dude, really? You went a YEAR w/ a defective keyboard?? And only due to unexplained happenstance it is working right now?

I have no idea why you would not have either (a) knocked the crud out of it that kept it from functioning properly, (b) didn't purchase a new one, or (c) got one for free from a swap / recycle place.

Oh, the things you learn about your fellow Dakka's.

Yeah its true I couldn't be bothered to replace it lol It really was getting on my nerves but I kinda got used to it, although its a bit odd at work when I miss all the k's out of sentences and suddenly realise what am I doing!

It wasnt just the k button half my numbers dont work as well but they are all good today, its a miracle! It did make bidding on ebay a bit weird

I've got no idea why its suddenly started working again, tis odd.

Great work again. Are you doing a frozen waterfall on one of the wolfs? Looks nice.

Assault cannon guy is cool with the half black armour.

Sorry I'm confused, are they a chaos?

Great work, GiraffeX! I particularly like the Wolf Guard with the missile launcher, the Fallen Angel, and the Long Fang. On the WG, it looks like he has OSL on the backs of his legs; where is that coming from? Or is it not OSL?

Also, I think tipios' idea of a frozen waterfal - or some other frozen water effect - would be very cool.

Thanks tipios, no its not a waterfall its where the tree goes. A waterfall sounds like a great idea, I'll have to remember that when I do my next batch of models for the Dark Wolves.

Yeah Skyrar's Dark Wolves are chaos. The assault cannon guy is one of the Fallen (Ex Dark Angels), I thought doing his armour pre heresy Dark Angel colours one side and the Dark Wolves colour the other would look cool

Each unit of my Wolf Guard squads has something different about them to make them stand out as not Space Wolves.

Do you mean the Fallen WG? He has a very faint green highlight on the backs of his legs and and other raised areas where light would catch.

The WG with broken, yellow missile launcher on the ground. 8th picture down. Looks like blue light on his legs. Maybe it's the picture?

That drop pod is one of the most perfect examples of what I am striving for in my terrain work. I know I keep going on and on about it, but it *really* caught my eye and inspired me to actually try to learn how to do it rather than keep saying "I wish my stuff looked like that". To that end, thank you for the tips. I'm giving this a genuine effort and working way outside my "comfort zone". The results so far are a vast improvement from what I've done in the past and no doubt I'll continue to improve.

Yes, it's all about me. Me me me! Ha.

Great work all around! I especially like the Fallen, the concept is solid and the shoulder pad w/ "Fallen" on it is such a direct "in your face" to DA players... love it!
