Hey, glad you like the grenade Marine... It was quite hard to get the right pose, and... I think I almost failed lol !!! I wanted to picture him ready to storm the building / corner as soon as the grenade goes off, hence the bolter at the ready (and with added finger OFF the trigger on the later pics) !

As for the badge, it's a bit less smooth than the picture, of course... Skulls are decals obviously too lol !!

Very excited to see your work on the Star Phantoms. They have a difficult icon to master, but you'll definitely get it in time. First attempt looks really good, the hourglass just looks a little chubby. Congratulations on 2nd place at Armies on Parade, that's awesome! New tac squads look great. I am a big fan of the guy pitching the grenade around the corner. Bolter looks a little huge with the shoulder strap, but it is still sweet looking.

Yeah, of course he'll be the captain of this army ! Captain Androcles, Star Phantoms 9th company... The one who dealt Huron a lethal melta shot square in his tyranty face !!!!

As for the rules, I do have them, thanks for the offer (His custom version of the "Tank Hunter" USR should combine well with the new Imperial Fists chapter tactics mwahahahahah )

Indeed, it IS more than a little chubby ! Twas my first try anyway... I also am thinking about printable decals for them : it should prove waaaaayyyy easier, if I can pull this off !

Thanks for the rest

It's a bit over weathered imo. Or maybe that the chips are to small and uniform maybe.

I would have to agree, the chipping looks more like a camo pattern than realistic chipping that would go around joints, and areas of use... also probably would tend to be smaller chips. Are you using the hairspray method for this?

I think the star phantoms are awesome though, you just need to find a balance... show off areas of almost solid white areas and the contrast between the white and the bright gold with a bit of green to break it up... makes them look regal.

I have to admit that I agree with you, WM360... It's what I felt when it was finished

Nope, it's with some random foam, just like a blister one ! Never used the hairspray technique... Maybe I should try on vehicles ?

TBH, the hardest thing for me is to be able to reach ALL areas, while still keeping the weathering somewhat "light"... I've tried to keep it on the edges & more prominent areas, but it's kinda tough...

Some of you had asked for a tutorial earlier... Here are a few pics I've taken, but it was hard to do something proper !!

Step 1 = White base (spray is fine), Sepia wash in the armour recesses :

Step 2 = Dip your blister foam in a dark brown colour (I've used Dryad Bark for this one), then stipple it on your palette until it yields some patches like on the lower left of the pic :

Step 3 = Apply it in the model edges :

The result you're aiming for is what you see on the Marine lower left leg (well, that's what I try to get anyway ), ie. a bit heavier on the edges, and lighter on the large, flat areas. (It is still a bit too heavy on those pics).

You can see some better examples on my Tau :
Spoiler:

Thanks for the genuine comments !! I'll try and be more subtle on the next Marines !!

Yeah, what I would suggest if you are trying to gain more precision with this is to carve a little piece off the sponge, use a pair of tweezers, then apply it that way. It is far easier to put the chips where you want. Also a natural sponge from the art store or w/e might give you smaller dots or more variety. The reason why I asked if it was hairspray is because of the relatively uniform distribution of chips... part of it is due to taste of course, but personally I think for something to be chipping off paint to that degree it would have to be Nurgle or some unused neglected piece of equipment, and have the corresponding dirt, rust and streaking from the dirt and rust combined with general discoloration... the combination of those chips with the stark white armor is very jarring. At least in the pictures! I just really like the pictures of the white armor so much better... looks so good with golden/gilt detailing.... not that I am not a fan of weathering! Weathering on top of white is simultaneously very easy, and very treacherous.

He looks awesome. I love the pops from the green OSL. The weathering looks great. I, personally, have no problem with marines looking overly weathered, ya know since they fight for years on end. I think intentionally doing less weathering around certain focal points (such as the face) may help pull more focus from the viewer. It isn't very realistic that his face would get beat up any less, but I think it helps keep some character on the models. Regardless, it's all looking good, Yggs!

I hate offering a negative critique because I know you put a lot of work into concept and execution, but in my opinion it simply did not work on the Marine. The Tau look awesome with the same technique, so it's a head scratcher. Maybe just too much in such a small area?

On the fluff side I can't see a Marine not maintaining his armor. Sorry man, I'm just not feeling the love for this one.

Mostly, on my phone.

As heavy weathering, I like it. For a marine though, not so much. Fluff aside, I think it looks odd on the curved surfaces.

Also, loss of definition around the eyes. Might be cool for death guard, though.

Yeah, I've tried the "small sponge & tweezers" technique, but the paint just dries too quickly to get a good result...
Thanks for your point, I somewhat concur with everything you've said...

As I said earlier, this was a test model ! So I think I'll try with lighter weathering on the other models... As for the "non-weathered models", I just feel like they're missing something... And I've also been a bit heavy on the sepia wash, I don't think it looks THAT good...

Lol maybe... I'll definitely try that on my future-planned Plague Marines army... Maybe in the year 2027 or so lol !!

Thank you guyz for the honest & constructive criticism !!! I really appreciate it !

Nothing new to show besides a partly-assembled Shadowblade assassin :

My FLGWS just organized a painting competition with that specific model as the only allowed ! So though I didn't really like it at first, I did pick it up on Saturday... And I've been torturing myself on how to paint it ever since lol !!!

And being assembled, I have to admit it looks much better than in the pics !

I'm thinking of a Night Lords paint scheme : deep blue with lightning bolts. But I'm still pondering on the cloak ! Any idea ??

Side note : just for consistency's sake, I just changed my avatar pic... Now my Disqus, Facebook & Dakka avatars are one and the same !!!

First off, something I've wanted to do for quite some time is a crater depicting an exploded Land Raider, for use in games when those vehicles explode :

I'll probably add a few more bitz, but I'm quite happy with out it looks for now... Still, I'll welcome any idea that will make it look better, of course !

Second pic is the cloak for the Shadowblade assassin, almost done :

As for the crater, I'll probably add some more rubble, but LR bits are quite hard to come by... And no, I'm not going to buy one to make a wreck out of it
Still, that means I agree with you... Have to think about it....

Yeah, it was either red or purple... I guess purple will do !
Solar_lion wrote:Nice cloak, but nice face as well.

Lol, face wasn't even remotely done by then, only the basecoat.... The face is quite hard to paint, as the hood prevents many movements you'd need with the paintbrush to do it properly... Still I think I managed it after all
Radu Lykan wrote:very nice work on the cloak, exploded raider needs moar raider!

Thanks Radu Lykan, also agree with the Raider thing..... It's just that I don't have that many LR bitz around !!! Some tracks, assault ramp & side doors seemed fine at first....

Well, I asked on the store's FB page, but he hasn't answered me yet...
And, after foraging for 2 whole hours in my bitz boxES, I've only found a couple of inappropriate eldar & elf heads, as well as a few arms that wouldn't fit it anyway... So I just gave up on the conversion idea...
