Should be the same size.

Yup, I believe it to be exactly the same size and shape as the Imperial version. So it can be played with no questions. The leg bases are the exact size as per spec. and that template for the landing pad is the exact shape and size. This thing is huge. approx. 300 mm (12") across.

Well update time, this is still very WIP.

Landing platform started in ernest...

And underneath.....

Yup the legs are held on with magnets, so they can come off for transportation.

Lots still to do, but thoughts appreciated.

Make sure you support those corner sections (the ones not near the pylons).

Thanks,

@ Gits, I know what you mean, and I will be adding some strengthening, also got to work out the edging for the platform to take the shield walls.

@ Vik, Thanks. It's hard trying to make it look orky and actually useful!!

So couple extra shots.

First up, I totally get you Gits and will be adding more, however to reassure you, I am laminating the PC for strength.....

Next up ..this one, don't think I pointed out the magic trick for painting....

Keep it coming guys and dolls.

Thank you guys.

Ok this is a bit of a trial out here. Going for a large Badmoons symbol in the centre of the LZ, however, bright spark hit me in the head last night, "Make it 3d". Not sure how viable this is, so will do both, and upto gits which he wants to use when he gets it.

These pics are an attempt to show the contrast on the surface. I will pva the surface, and probably GS a bit here and there, see what you think, am I wasting me time here?

It's about 5mm thick at the mo.

Thoughts please?

Here's the problem...

Figures still need to easily stand on the surface. That's why on the real platform, the the varying plates (generally) are not overlapping on top of each other... the butt up against one-another, leaving the surface relatively flat. Cool as that is... it would be totally impractical from a gaming perspective. I think a symbol made out of a couple of thin layers of plasticard would be your best bet.

Come to think of it, you might put a slight bevel on those overlapping edges too (on the rest of the platform). Taking just a little off the uppermost edge might make a big difference in how figures balance on it (remember... orks tend to be top-heavy and rather unbalanced).

Another option is to just keep adding plates until it's all level- just don't have them butting up right against each other, but rather off-kilter with uneven gaps, and maybe one or two missing corners or bent up sections here and there. Maybe texture some with diamond stamp patterns, grids, expanded steel, corrugated...

Then the Bad Moon could either be sloppily painted on, or made as a 'mosaic' of specifically shaped plates that "just happen" to end up flush with all the rest of them.

that giant of an icon looks very good... never ever think about chucking that into the waste bin!

but I am fully with gits on the way too much raised surface with that icon... the idea to make the icon with flat metal or wooden plates and boards sounds also more fitting and if done the right thing could be at least as cool if not even cooler...

Just echoing more of the same RE: the giant icon. Looks cool, but impractical both from a function and a playability stand point. Cool idea, though.

Cam, with the amazing work you are doing on it, I am sure delays in updates can be excused.

The giant icon would look awesome (not that it doesn't already) held vertically by girders etc like a billboard or something.

I really love those supports

Cool Idea. However, maybe done as a Bas Relief, so you can actually safely put models on the top. Everything looks impressive.

Thanks all.

OK So sorry for lack of updates. Several factors. RL kicking a bit and....

Firstly, initially thought I would build a frame, stick a thin piece of PC on it, then slap down lots of plates laminated up making a strong flat surface.

Blooming thing is not flat, all that laminating and layering has warped the thing in general. I mean it is flat and strong, but not "flat".

so ordered up more materials. Been waiting on them arriving. They are finally here so will start on MkII.

Also, sorry Nerdy....

A while back I donated some old SM bits nerdy's way, and the silly man sent something back......

Can't believe it, I am afraid it will end up looking nothing like the kit, I hope thats OK Nerdy.

Cheers for now folks, hope to have something for you soon.

can´t believe that the plasticcard has warped so much... why?...if it had been cardboard.. then I'd understood...
hmmm....also... I think the current work looks a bit too busy... even in that still unpainted state...hmmm.... for my roof of my diner I had quite long thought about what materials would be so wide and big to have not too many small items for the patchwork... and the conclusion wasn´t helping... I couldn´t come up with something big enough to have just a few bits for the roof... so I guess the same principle will works here ...

the bomma looks as if nerdy de-orkified it... that will be weird... now you probably will reorkify the deorkified bomma....*head explodes...*

yeah warping... for porous stuff it is always the uneven gain/loss of moisture, but plastics... what glue did you use? Or uneven surface heating.

Ah well, you can always re-purpose the warped piece for some other project. It would be the orcy thing to do

Turn it into an orc dropship or some kind of VTOL. Something to land on the landing pad.

now I have the perfect idea.... create some wings for different flyers...and from these you can build the platform^^

I think what you want is larger pieces that more or less meet up next to each other without overlapping to make up the whole shape from irregular shapes (maybe no smaller that a 6th or 8th of the total area).

Then just add a few small patches, here and there, to hold the larger parts together. This will give it the ramshackle look. Lay them on without glue first until you get the right density and placement.

Support the whole thing underneath with "girders" for strength.

That should give you a largely flat surface that looks like flyers can land on it, models can stand on it and still look Orky.

I think Dr H has got it Cam. Make a patchwork on the bottom like a piece of stained glass, with no overlaps. Then if you want to you can put some flat plates that lie on top, but use really thin plastic so they don't add much in the way of depth irregularity. When you're making the "stained glass" section, you can use plastic sheets with different patterns on them (clean, lined, diamond plate, etc.) in order to give it a more random look.

I'm betting the 'warping' is because you were trying to push plasticard down levels and glued it. You need to make sure all the card that's on a single level is completely on a single level- no jumping up or down onto other levels of plasticard!
