I have to go with DKoK. IIRC, there has been no style of fighting more proportionally killy/shity than Trench warfare, which the Death Korps SPECIALIZES in. Now, I'll grant you that jungle fighting takes a lot of cajones, but specializing in Trench Warfare is so badass as to approach mass insanity.
The Tanith started off with around 3000 men, and after a whole lot of and new recruits, they still number 3000, and they have gone through worse things then most other regiments. Tanith have no tanks, no special weapons. They have like 10 sniper rifles and 10 flamers. Perhaps 10% of the regiment can use a rocket launcher An of course 2 bolt pistols, a plasma pistol and a power sword...oh and we can't forget those single shot auto pistols. Other regiments have a reason to fight, they fight to keep their home world alive and give it glory. The Tanith have no home world, just war. They have gone through worse battles then any other regiment, I mean almost every time they have been outnumbered 3:1. They allways survive the storms and thats why there badass. And of course they have Mkvenner and mkoll the most badass ninjas in the galaxy...and of course don't forget the best sniper in the galaxy, Larkin. Tanith forever!

If by badass you mean best, then it has to be the Cadians. They are the best. boring maybe, but still the best. If you disagree you have not read "Cadian Blood". Of course you can't trust everything the BL publishes, but A-D-B has proven to be true to the fluff so far.
As a military history nut, and particularly British history, got to throw my vote in with the Praetorians. And I loved the Massacre at Big Toof river diorama from years ago.

Whoa there, they've had their regiment shredded and taken 50% causalties at least 3 times. They maintain a decent troop strength because of replacements just like any other regiment and even then I think they're far below 3000 as of the last book. There's maybe 500 of the actual Tanith from poor Tanith left.
That being said it is total BS that the Catachans have now passed the Tanith!

Yes, but who's uniforms are spiffiest?

How so few for the Tallarn Desert Raiders?! These guys always appealed to me. Hit and run in the desert, sandbags and dugouts... (And the models looked pretty good in my opinion). It was actually seeing the old 'Eavy Metal Tallarn basilisk model that got me into 40k I recall. If only forge world complimented their Tallarn heavy weapon crews with some standard infantry models (the design difference between the FW and GW infantry is very different).
The infantry is great enough, but Tallarn was the site of the largest tank battle in history. Tallarn battle tank crews are seriously hardcore- theres some great video clips from the classic Final Liberation game, including a good one of a Leman Russ rolling over a dune, and a windswept commander opening the hatch and scanning the sandstorm with optics. Also, there's something unexplainably awesome about a Tallarn Baneblade... I must have one...
Not to mention Captain Al'rahem and his ornate Instant Death smiticar (glad to see he kept that monster from 2nd ed), he's harder than he looks. What a badass! He makes for some interesting games.
Aside from Tallarn, you've gotta respect the Mordian Iron Guard. Spit, polish, chaos spawn and xenos blood. Steady at the back there.. First Rank, Fire!

didnt GW have an article on someones tallarn baneblade, which had loads of kit on it. i cannot find it on the GW website though... tbf tallarn are pretty badass too. if they had a plastic range i would probabely buy them. you cannot mess with an army of T.E Lawrences...
The soldiers don't even get medals and are expected to die horribly in trench warfare.. From the IA books Krieg is essentially a soldier factory which produces soldiers who expect to die. They request the worst theatres of war.

Yes, but who's uniforms are spiffiest?
That is a tough one. Since the Praetorians came from Mordian miniatures originally I guess I'd have to side with the Mordians if for no other reason than they were the first kids on the block to have dress uniforms. But on second thought red would be harder to keep clean than dark blue, so perhaps the Praetorians would win the spiffiest uniform award for sheer effort of keeping Ork gak off their red coats.

They are the most badass.
Krieg is the only planet, currently in the fluff at least, that's authorized to utilize cloning technology on a massive scale.
Make of that what you will.
Automatically Appended Next Post: As for my vote...it's really hard to choose between the Elysians and Cadians, but I have to pick the Cadians.
Screw all these Praetorians, Mordians, etc. Cadia is a planet that does one thing and one thing only:
War.
If they're not mounting a defense of Cadia itself, they're shipping troops offworld to the most intense combat zones in the Imperium so that they can keep their skills honed.
The Cadian Shock is also the most widely emulated regiment out there, in terms of equipment and training.
They've got their own bloody Stormtrooper equivalents for feth's sake!

No, a lot of regiments have Stormtrooper support that's attached to them.
Cadians and the Death Korps are the only ones who can theoretically field entire Stormtrooper equivalent regiments without having to ask the Schola Progenium or the Administratum for Stormtrooper detachments(the Cadians' Kasrkin and the Death Korps' Grenadiers, respectively).
Cadians. They face down the darkest horrors of the universe and still survive! Actually, wait....
"And what are the achievements of your fragile Imperium? It is a corpse rotting slowly from within while maggots writhe in its belly. It was built with the toil of heroes and giants, and now it is inhabited by frightened weaklings to whom the glories of those times are half-forgotten legends."
Kanluwen wrote:"Grenadiers" are just veterans with standard lasguns and heavier armor.
They don't have the training or specialist equipment that makes Stormtroopers, Kasrkin, and Krieg Grenadiers unique.
You can apply that same statement to Kasrkin and Krieg Grenadiers, they are simply veterans given better training and equipment after all. Arguably the only equipment difference between stormtroopers and grenadiers is the hotshot lasguns (or hellguns, whatever they're calling them now).

Yes and no.
Kasrkin are mostly brought up from the White Shields and then given specialized training that is as intense, if not more, than the standard Schola Progenium regimen for Stormtroopers. The catch is that just like Stormtroopers, sometimes they bring up veterans from standard infantry Regiments and give them the same training.
Krieg's Grenadiers are a bit of a different bit, as it tends to be a mandatory tour given to troopers who've really been proven in battle.
Why aren't the last chancers not in the list?
(I probably quote it wrong anyway)
''If a prisoner is allowed to choose between death or serving in Starken's last chancers, they often choose death.''
To me, it seems like they rather want to die then serve for him and die.
Overall Record W-L-D = 22-24-15
Bataviran 197th/222nd Catachan "Iron Wolves", arrogant, dedicated and ruthless!
Captain Detlev Vordon, regimental commander.
Colonel Vladimir Russki, regimental commander 222nd Catachan.
Besides Catachans, there is one more incredibly badass Imperial Guard group in the grimdarkness of the grimdark future;
*cough*Drookian Fen Guard*cough, cough*
Now I challenge anyone to doubt this logic; It takes massive balls of steel to fight all manner of enemies and weapons while the only "protection" you get "down there" is a simple, wool kilt. Drookian Fen badass? Of course. As badass as Catachans? No way.
