That said, did you have to hire facilities, or were you lucky enough to get your hands on student facilities and the like? Self-mastered?

Yeah, we hire a place. It's pretty nice, but it costs us 150 quid a month - and we share it with another two bands, who each pay the same. We produced, engineered, mixed and mastered it all ourselves - I think it shows in the mastering, which has turned out... OK. Could have been better, if I'm being brutally honest. Our keys-player and processing guy did it, and they hadn't done it before. They were essentially flying blind, but I think it stands up REASONABLY well against commercial recordings. I think we would get someone else to do it next time, maybe...

The vocals are very, very good, "Ryan" (). They get a bit lost in some tracks (balance-wise), but you've got a great voice that verbs out well (). Very distinctly Northern ().

I'm still listening... but I'll get back to ya.

Fanks! Do you have anything of yours I can listen to? We struggling musicians have to stick together, dontchaknow...

Does your drummer play an electric kit? More importantly, can your boys pull this off live instrumentally? Electronic hats always bug me but I'm a keyboardist and if I have to listen to pop, it at least has to have keys/electronica in it. Nice mix of both!

Cheers. No, we don't use an electronic kit - we have a bloke who processes the beats and has a load of gadgets to help him make little improvisational changes on the fly. I'm not the most tech-savvy bloke, but I know there's a laptop in there somewhere! Also, lots of weird boxes, tape delays etc., in addition to two synths.

That reviewer didn't call you moonface once, the fether clearly doesn't know what he's talking about regarding vocalists.

Spot on with the rest of it though.

I hope that this is the first of many good reviews for dresden.

Hi, thought I'd update this with a few new snippets of press stuff that we managed to secure. We did full-page interview for the Manchester Evening News CityLife guide - thought folks might like to check it out?

“...A spectral odyssey of electronica-enhanced melancholia... one of the standout Manc music offerings of 2010... a band whose contrast between their minimalism of presentation and emotional fervour of songwriting carries genuine power and enigma...
David Sue, CityLife (Manchester Evening News), (Dec 10, 2010)

This is a link to the article online, but it was also in the print version - the MEN is estimated to be read by almost half a million people. Which is nice.
http://www.citylife.co.uk/news_and_reviews/news/10018891_interview__dresden

“The quality both in songwriting and production is consistent throughout its eight tracks... That they made this whole thing themselves without any financial backing or a great deal of outside assistance puts a fair few name producers to shame... (4 out of 5)”
Cath Aubergine, Manchestermusic.co.uk, (Nov 30, 2010)

http://www.music-dash.co.uk/releases/release.asp?item=6861

The album is still available to download from www.dresdenmusic.com

and is now also being distributed online by Copyleft Records at: http://copyleft-records.com/?page_id=766

Nice! Well done with that, and it's good to see you're starting to get attention from a large amount of people (half a million people! wow!). How many times has the album been downloaded anyway?

The articles certainly looked full of praise, and I found the stuff about your musical 'philosophy' pretty interesting, although:

Absolutely no pressure at all to pay anything for the record mate! Just having people listen to it is awesome. But thanks a million. Really.

@Dastardly Dave - Well, I don't know if half a million people actually READ that article about my little band... but the MEN has a very large circulation. So you never know!

I appologize, Alba. I said I was going to "download it later", and completely forgot. Downloading it now.

I have to say, though. Enough is Never Good Enough is fething awesome, man.

I figured I better ask you, since you own it; do you mind if I rip this to listen to in my car? It's a 3 hour commute to work and back.

Will do - in the meantime, why not join our facebook group? It's the best way to keep up with developments. We've assembled a remix album with mixes of the 'Dresden' tracks that other folks have done. We've been giving it away with gig tickets in the form of a card with an exclusive download code on it, but we'll make it generally available in the New Year sometime, I reckon.

I've got the album on my play list and listen to it quite often when I paint,it's actually a nice change from the hardcore punk I usually listen to.

Just gave it a listen, and even though the styling is not really up my alley, my opinion as an electronic musician is that it's really well written and produced, considering you guys did it on your own. I definately have some people that would love this that I'll be recommending it to.

Listening to the first track, definetly sounds great.

I'll be downloading the entire album.

Just promise, when you become famous, you won't forget about Dakka. WE MADE YOU, WE CAN DESTROY YOU.

Oh, and I've been playing the album on Audiosurf, and I've gotten to Pressure so far. As far as criticism goes, I'd have to say it's a pretty damn good song, but the bass just overpowers everything, and it's a real shame when you consider just how beautiful the keyboards are in this song. As much as I love a nice strong bass, I'd suggest making it quieter in this song, since the keyboards are just too beautiful to be covered up.

Thanks for the comments, guys! Much appreciated by all in Dresden. The band, not the place.

@Fafnir - Individual listener experiences may vary!

Anyone else noticed that the record is particularly bass-heavy in terms of frequencies?

Oh, I'm not saying it's bad, in fact, I quite like it. Pressure is my favourite song on the album. However, that was just the one flaw in the song that kept jumping out at me. I personally love a heavy bass when it's in the right place (J. J. Burnel is my favourite bassist, for his unrelentingly heavy bass which can just take over entire songs at times), but the base in that one song seemed just a little too powerful considering all the other great elements of that song.

The song really seems like it puts the vocals and keyboards at the forefront, in my opinion. You could drop everything else, and it would still be a great song. The rest of the tracks feel fairly well balanced, although Pressure has so much more raw power in it that it really stands out regardless of its flaws.

Really though, the only thing that worries me on a whole is that my playlist is getting more and more dominated by Manchester.

Yeah I've had a lot of friends in bands, and Ryans latest offering is the first one I actually listen to when I'm sitting at home and genuinely enjoy.

I'm not a person that's mega "into" music. But I think that's acclaim right there.

It's a bit muddy on the low end. The lower frequencies lack definition. Sub-bass seems okay, but 60-150 is kinda mushy. It's not always the easiest thing to fix so I wouldn't beat up the engineers too bad I usually get around it by running each track into 2 subchannels. One has a HPF cutoff at 150 and the other a LPF at 90. It takes out that whole problematic frequency range. Once I get to the mixing stage, I can dial back in just what I want. Certainly not the only way to handle it, but it works well enough for me.
