Tried keeping track of which chapter was winning until people started putting multiple chapters (including me). By the looks of it Blood ravens, blood angels, salamanders, ultramarines, alpha legion and black templars are the top contenders at the moment. I think blood ravens are still just in the lead.

I also quite like the Crimson Suns Chapter from the Netepic Gold book, I know its a Fan made one but they are pretty cool. http://www.netepic.org/ Crimson Suns The Crimson Suns were founded during the 22nd Founding using geneseed tithes from the White Scars Chapter. Upon reaching codex strength they were ordered to join the Mandaria Crusade, in which the new Chapter proved itself in spearheading many planetary assaults. During the liberation of Ryuten II the terminators of 1st Company distinguished themselves by fighting their way through to the main command centre and executing the rebel commander. Warmaster Mandaria was so impressed he granted the Crimson Suns the right of conquest, and Ryuten II has been the Chapter’s home world ever since. Ryuten II long had a strong warrior-aristocracy called Samurai, from which the Crimson Suns drew their recruits. Over time the chapter adapted certain practices of the warrior-aristocracy, including a preference for melee combat and a distain for heavy weapons. The motto of the Crimson Suns is: “Better to die with honor than to live with shame.” They live for the purpose of destroying the Emperor’s enemies, preferably in melee, and there is no greater honor than to die in battle. They favor lightning assaults and planetary drops to get into melee quickly. Company 1st Hatamoto Company 2nd - 5th Assault Companies 6th - 9th Tactical Companies 10th Ashigaru Company Very cool.

Imperial fists and crimson fists. The IF helped with most of the defence on terra while the crimson fists are like the underdog style chapter. Being almost obliterated, they still had their nerve against the orks finally wiping them out.

My favorite chapter is the Carcharodons (aka Space Sharks). They are incredibly viscous and relentless. I like the idea of an ancient crusade chapter that has existed out of contact with the IOM for centuries at a time. They use codes and dialects that are all but forgotten. Plus, chainfist lightning claws.

Honestly, I love the ferocity of the Carcharodons, but after reading the Badab stuff, I really do not like them. Their tactics are fantastic, but their practices against civilians, and even other chapters, makes them quite the douchebag chapter.

I am a Badab nut, it is true. Always have been. Mentor Legion & Crimson Fists are not from the Badab War though! As for Rainbow Warriors, I was kinda joking, but although very little was ever done with them officially, there was some cool stuff around about them being like South American tribal guys. Jaguar Warriors and so on. Might have even been on Dakka.

^ this, they're basically space marine ninjas based heavily off of Edgar Allen Poe's "The raven", what's not to like?
plus the fact that not only did they regain dignity, they suffered 96% casualties at Istvaan and still escaped the system with 3 legions after them (outnumbered at least 30 to one), then fresh from that were ambushed by the alpha legion and survived that, too, then the disappearance (most likely death) of thier primarch shortly after that. They were practically gakked on majorly through the whole heresy and are still around to this day, following the tactics that ensured their chapter's survival 10,000 years before.

I mean come on, they have the best Chapter Master out of all of the other Chapters. Who was chosen to lead the campaign for Armageddon? Dante! Their Primarch forsaw his death and still teleported onto Horus' battle barge knowing full well he would be going to his death. And lets not forget Mephiston.

Glad to see that many people favour the chapters that had participated within the Badab War engagement: the Minotaurs, Sons of Medusa, Astral Claws, Star Phantoms, Space Sharks amongst many others. Although, my own personal favourite chapter, the Mantis Warriors, who to my surprise have already been briefly mentioned, IMO are the most underrated and badass chapter established within the canon.
Why?
First, consider that they where created pre-Rouge Trader era by GW and expanded fluff-wise as part of the secessionists within the Badab War, who, unlike the Astral Claws who, within certain pieces of canon, had succumbed to rebellion as a result of chaos influence, openly gave the finger to the high lords and the Imperium, but not to the Emperor. Moreover, after having been defeated by the Loyalist forces, the Mantis Warriors chose to begin a century long crusade to repay the Imperium, instead of being like traditional Mary Sues and running (like the Astral Claws).
Second, within specific canon, the Mantis Warriors are dedicated stealth practitioners. That's right. 8-feet tall, walking slabs of metal, who apparently paint their armour in mediocre camouflage patterns and stick twigs in their helmets, are apparently some of the best stealth units the Imperium has to offer. Mind-boggoling. Again, a perfect example of the badassary and complete silliness that made pre-spiritual liege GW chapters the best.
Finally, they have single-handidly saved C.S. "Multilasers" Goto's career, "Trial of the Mantis Warriors" being the only short which people have actually ever enjoyed from him. This, in it's own right, is completely badass.

Well Ultras rule for me...
Its not exactly matching up as to why, but I feel like the post by VT summaries my feelings too on the UM awesomeness
Veteran Sergeant wrote: ...Horus then used the fact that he knew Guilliman would follow his orders to make sure the Ultramarines, the legion he knew was the strongest and most dangerous to his plans, were as far away as possible so he made up an assignment that would require the whole legion and gave it to the Ultramarines. And he sent the second largest legion to try and take them by surprise. But the Ultramarines managed to both defeat the Word Bearers, and remain the largest and strongest of legions. That's pretty bad ass. I mean, I've been an Ultramarines players since long before the Horus Heresy was anything more than a few paragraphs long, but hey, the truth is what it is.
You can hate the Ultramarines for whatever silly reasons your brain has concocted. Because you don't like the 5th Edition Codex, or Matt Ward, or who knows whatever nonsense you've cooked up. But the facts remain the same. They were the most successful legion before the Heresy, they were the most successful after it, and they've been the most successful Chapter since the Second Founding. Plus, their primarch wrote the book on being a Space Marine, literally. The book described as being like a mix of Sun Tzu, Clausewitz, and every other military genius for 30,000 years. How do we know all of this? Because Rick Priestley, the creator of 40K, told us so, twenty years ago almost, long before Matt Ward painted his first miniature.
After UM, I like the Iron Snakes. As soon as I finish converting and painting 2k of Tanith, I plan on making 1k ish of Iron Snakes to aid any other armies that need their awesome awesomeness.

I've gotta say that the Thousand Sons are my favourite fluff wise. They're probably the biggest reason I play chaos and dislike the Emperor. They were wronged more than any other legion IMHO, and because of the Emperor's short-sightedness ended up siding with Horus and Chaos. The real kicker to me is that after being chastised for their practice of psychic powers and ultimately turning traitor, the loyalist forces began using sorcery themselves, and even sponsored one of the most psychically powerful forces in the galaxy in the form of the Grey Knights.

I can't decide between the Salamanders (not enough people in the Imperium who attain high military rank give a crap about the Emperor's people), Raven Guard who are just plain awesome and Mantis Warriors who outsmarted DE (though they had to let them commit to a raid, however it was portrayed as a hard decision and not a callous one, as they were trying to protect the entire sector from that kabal) and are grate tacticians and have specialized sniper units formed from full fledged battle brothers.
I guess ill have to go with the Mantis Warriors who just don't have a lot of fans.

Black Templar will always be mine due to the fact that they are the only chapter that still resembles a legion. Rather than sitting around as a glorified police force like the codex chapters, they still follow the original aim of the space marines to conquer all known worlds in the name of humanity.
They pretty much hate everyone, and as per "Helsreach" they have little regard for protecting civilians when it comes to killing an enemy warboss. What other chapters chain their weapons to themselves?

Hmmm...Not sure there, they have a fair few HH books on them, they are very much fleshed out.
The Deathwing story is still amazing, Bill King set the bar high there, and I still love seeing the North American Indian references on the models, although these days there seems less and less of this as they have become more generic bone coloured terminators..

Gonna be honest, if we're just talking color scheme I'd have to go with the forge world chapter. The red scorpions they look awesome, symbol is meh but then most are. Overall though I like the Ultra Marines the most, thats kinda why I made them for my army. They have a solid color scheme, a great set of lore and play a big role in almost everything in the galaxy. But my favorite thing about them is they have no stupid gak. I hate this about most other chapters, like the salamanders have this great [mocking voice] dark flaw [/mocking voice] or the blood angels and their [mocking voice] dark curse [/mocking voice] or even the space wolves that are [mocking voice] the most savage evar [/mocking voice], its all just stupid gak thrown in to give them a reason to not use the same codex. Frankly if a chapter wants to set it self apart they should do so through their actions, not through some stupid dark curse flaw bs that serves no fething purpose other than to make someone sound special.

Blood Angels. Because any army that can take insane (literally) psychopathic DREADNOUGHTS is alright in my book. They have so many Land Raiders they don't know what to do with them, they put assault cannons on preds, all their rhino-based tanks are fast, and they have this special group of guys called the Death Company, who are bat**** insane.
But the dreads pretty much take the cake.
