2nd game ever while I was learning to play came against an Eldar player. Assaulted 15 Storm Guardians with my Genestealers. he told me they were I7, S4, T4 with 4 attacks... my genestealers got smashed.
Then he played a psychic power on Turn 4 that did not exist... The store manager heard him do it and called him on it.
I ended up losing 7kp to 6kp (almost beat him) and at the end I asked to look at his list as I felt something was fishy and looked at the Storm Guardian stats.
It resulted with me giving him a mouthful.

P.S. without actually seeing the game board it is a tough call, but from what he described, I envision a road.
It could have a sign with the word "road" on it, and have a giant "+6 inches" in rocks across it... not discussed before game, not going to happen... RAW, RAI, and basic etiquette,
Thats just as bad, if not worse as trying to use it as a road.
Many is the time I've gotten to turn three and realised we forgot to clarify what something was. If I suddenly asked my opponent 'Oh, do you think we should count those roads as actual roads?' and he stands to gain by it NOT being a road, you can bet london to a brick he's going to piss and moan about it.

You can see how this gets into a grey area, through no one players particular fault. Often times it is simply forgotten or overlooked, or assumed, and it's a dick move on anyones part to argue about it when it will go in their favour. Get an independant referee, and be prepared to deal with whatever he rules. Or 4+ it.
thats all well and good, but it is clear as day that you NEED let alone MUST clarify before the game starts, this is to stop the EXACT thing the OP is taking about, there is no grey area, it must be done

Massive overreaction. It's a game. The most that should ever happen is that someone packs up their mantoys and leaves.

"If you really want to know what it was like, to fight in the air in the great War, then go up to someone you have never met and who has never done you the slightest harm and pour a two-gallon tin of petrol over them. Then apply a match, and when they are nicely ablaze, push them from a fifteenth-floor window after first perhaps shooting them a few times in the back with a revolver. And be aware as you are doing these things that ten seconds later someone else will quite probably do them to you. This will exactly reproduce... the substance of First World War aerial combat and will cost your country nothing. It will also avoid the necessity of ten million other people to die in order for you to enjoy it."

I saw some real big dickery in my flgs last time i was there.
Orks vs GK. Must have been around 1750, not 100% sure. Im judgeing by the size of the ork mobz.
Anyway, Drago and friends were in a Stormraven. They blasted forward into mid board, alone and 'well defended'. The ork player surrounded him with, must have been around, 90 boyz. It was crazy. Then assault turn came. The first power fist in the Ork mob went... 4 6s in his attacks, to hit and for armour. He got a 5 on the damage chart. Awesome. Stormraven is wrecked, and drago amd friends have no where to deploy, and so die.
I you not, the ork played yelled so loud the entire store looked at him, then he danced around the tables yelling with joy.

7 Ork facts people always get wrong:
Ragnar did not win against Thrakka, but suffered two crushing defeats within a few days of each other.
A lasgun is powerful enough to sever an ork's appendage or head in a single, well aimed shot.
Orks meks have a better understanding of electrics and mechanics than most Tech Priests.
Orks actually do not think that purple makes them harder to see. The joke was made canon by Alex Stewart's Caphias Cain books.
Gharkull Blackfang did not even come close to killing the emperor.
Orks can be corrupted by chaos, but few of them have any interest in what chaos offers.
Orks do not have the power of believe. |

But it doesn't always get done, does it? And when it does, it's not always clear, is it? Sometimes we forget, or overlook something, or are not as specific as we should be, and it's not until turn three or four that we realise it.
Saying "Nuh uh, you didn't say it was a ruin so you don't get a cover save" is just as big a douche move as saying "Oh, but it looks like a road so I should get +6" movement'.
Once the game is underway it's going to be d-baggery no matter what happens, so claiming you were in the right for denying someone the rules for a road when it is quite clearly a road is being a douche. Just as claiming it is a road when you forgot to say it was is also a douche. You both forgot to clarify, but now whichever way it goes is going to be in one players favor.

Sure, you should agree what things are and their effects before the game - if I was playing and something was missed off and I wanted to incidentally do somethingwith it part way through the game I would check with the other player and try to come up with something that works for both of us (usually whatever the standard rules are) - if someone misses out clarifying something theey know they will be using in order to 'surprise' the other player, I would have an issue with it. Such an example was given with the road - the other player deployed with the express intention of using it but did not clarify the terrain feature.

usually, no. But you decide with your opponent at the beginning of the game anyways, so depends what they say. For all we know, a certain club could let you put EVERYTHING inside a building

If I can only list personal examples I've seen..
One time at a local gaming store (since shut down now, ) One of these new guys had challenged another player, I didn't really pay much attention till the end because I was in my own game (Playing a card game at the time actually, friendly dueling with someone I knew) but it was a bit obvious the guy kept getting frustrated cause you could hear him huffing off to the side and he was getting a little sore about his loss, when suddenly I hear a loud nearby smack against the wall nearby. Turns out that he was taking his loss bad enough that he was angrily gesturing at the end, and had (purposefully? not sure) smacked a rhino and a few models against the wall with a backsweep of his hand. Got banned after that though.

Exactly, he was intentionally deceptive to gain advantage, he cheated in short.
and kaldor, again you seem to be missing the whole point, clarify BEFORE game and thus stop all D-baggery that could arise from it, it really is that simple

Well, about the whole road+6 inches it is a big deal. There was 9 pieces of terrain on the board. 5 of those pieces were labeled. 3 were bridges over dangerous water, and 1 was a road.
How far can a land raider full of terminators assault? 12 + 2 disembark + 6 for the guys movement. 20 inches. Ok, add 6 to that. 26 inch assault. Why would i put my 7 warriors and 2 crypteks down that road, alone, knowing that my opponent with a landraider will use an extra 6 to get me?
Its one thing to forget "Oh man, was that 4+ dt?" And its one thing to be literally half way through the game and say "Oh, btw this terrain feature that we clarified at the beginning that had no purpose whatsoever now gives me the ability to assault you 26 inches. Kthx"
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh not to mention he didnt "drive" his LR onto the board. He placed it sideways to get that extra pivot distance when he moved.

That guy who stole your rulebook did you (and us) a great disservice.
This is incorrect. You can't hit models inside a vehicle until they are forced out of it. When a vehicle explodes, they do take hits, but that has nothing to do with the blasts fired at them.

No, this was how it was done.

Played a guy in a recent tournament who really thought that during pile in moves, all minis had to move in a straight line to get into B2B. I let this fly until the last turn when I charged his contesting squad to pull them off an objective.
Kinda a richard move; but then again, I wasnt the one sulking about it when his "rules lawyer" friend told him he was wrong.
Side note: I was asked by the TO to "dice off" for it. I said "Hell no!.... Show me the rule. I'm not taking a 50-50 chance on something Im 100% on."

(Correct me if I'm wrong) That's the rule. It'd be ridiculous having the explosion avoid models inside transports.
That guy who stole your rulebook did you (and us) a great disservice.
This is incorrect. You can't hit models inside a vehicle until they are forced out of it. When a vehicle explodes, they do take hits, but that has nothing to do with the blasts fired at them.

No, this was how it was done.
Space marines in a razorback. Razorback gets hit by blast. No damage to the razorback, but the guy claimed it hit all five space marines, and proceeded to roll to wound against the marines inside. Wtf?
I thought he meant the vehicle exploded...
I was mislead...

and kaldor, again you seem to be missing the whole point, clarify BEFORE game and thus stop all D-baggery that could arise from it, it really is that simple
Deliberately doing it is a douche move.
And I'm not missing the point, I know it's supposed to be done before the game. My point is simply that it often isn't, for one reason or another.

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?" |
