I thought the Hulk was the best character in the film, along with Robert Downey Jr.
On the other hand, the build-up and scene about how he controlled his anger was pretty awful.
"How do you control yourself?" (asked about 6 times over the course of the movie)
Finally: "I'm angry all of the time".
....
Well, why aren't you the hulk all of the time then? That makes absolutely no sense at all!

It kinda does. At the End of the 209 movie, He was trying to learn to control his transformations. So It could be that he can (somewhat) control the Hulk.
But that scene was just Awesome.

Add me to the "2003 Hulk is better" movie list. Ang Lee actually gave the movie some passion. Part 2 was good as well but was less sophisticated, which in my mind was unfortunate.
2012 Ghost rider was terrible, I almost walked out on it. Liked the first Ghost rider.

That makes some sense. They said in Avengers it had been quite some time (can't recall offhand the exact amount) since he had changed. The first time in the movie he changes is when he is injured from falling, not from anger or any choice of his own. Banner had stated earlier in his talk with Black Widow that The Hulk responds to injuries, like trying to shoot yourself in the head.
As for why he isn't the Hulk all the time, well the Hulk is unpredictable and just as likely to attack the Avengers as he is to support them.

That kinda has to be the case in order to explain why the Hulk was an unfocused, mindless monster earlier in the film, but a focused monster in the final battle. I guess the idea was that he can control it when he Hulks out on his own terms? Personally I thought that was a minor hole that could have used a smidge more explanation, even if it was just a single line of dialogue.

I just got to watch the movie tonight (was on the road for work when it came out and wanted to go with friends), and Hulk's battle with Loki left me in stitches. I couldn't stop laughing at it-he was unbelievably awesome. Won't describe it, as some haven't seen it, but Ruffalo did an amazing job with his whole area. However, I felt that unlike the Norton movie, Ruffalo was strongest as a supporting role, not a main role like Downey Jr or Evans. I also didn't get how people said Hawkeye and Widow had less screen time-I think they had pretty close to the MOST screen time. Hawkeye certainly had a ton. I think Cap actually had the least screen time being himself, and more time as a regular Joe.

Yeah, anyone with anger management issues can tell you that it's quite possible to be angry all the time, but to keep your anger in check and not let it control you.

Erm... I don't know quite what to say about it that..
Anger by it's very nature implies an emotional state - whether you control it or not.
The history of the hulk has always been that when he gets angry - i.e. when he feels anger, he changes into the hulk. Hence the immortal line, "you wouldn't like it when I'm angry"
In the comic books so many times you saw Bruce Banner almost afraid of when he is changing, or pleading with someone not to keep pushing him, because he knows what will happen.
It's what made him so dangerous and why he had to remove himself from that situation, and presumably why the Avengers were so weary about him being on board the flying fortress - because it was easy for him to change into a mindless, indestructible beast that would destroy it.
So right, 'because I'm always angry' makes absolutely no sense at all, unless they have changed the fundamental component of what the Hulk is and what causes him to change. Which would be pretty radical.

Remember though, When he first transformed in the avengers, it was because he was hurt(and therefore lost his concentration . So the Hulk could have thought "Host is hurt, Girl is only one around, therefore girl hurt host"
The Next time he transformed, it was under Banner's Control and (other than knocking thor into next week midfight) he pounded the bad guys.

I meant Cap actually being Cap, not just a guy in a t-shirt sitting at a table. I won't deny Evans had a lot of screen time, but a lot seemed as Steve Rogers, not as Cap. And yes, there is a difference.

I think you are confusing the comic and the TV show. In the comics transformations, and the resulting transformations, have been for various reasons. Even in the movie the first time he changes isn't because he is angry, but because he is injured. When the comic first began it had nothing to do with emotional states and he just changed at night. Banner has also had devices that allowed him to change at will as well. Like any character with such a long history there have been many changes.

I'm with you on this. I read an interview in which Whedon said the film was more or less through Cap's eyes, and read stuff about how Hawkeye and the Black Widow weren't onscreen much. I didn't find either to be true.
