Just to play Devils Advocate here, but why would a GW manager want to encourage a bunch of people who don't want to, or can't afford to buy the new book? When 6th comes out, that has got to be the game given priority in a GW store, not 5th. I'd just try to get in games of 6th with someone that has a rulebook.

Hi, you must be new to the internet.

I've been on forums for a very long time, and I still don't understand why people feel the compulsion to go all Chicken Little every single time there's the slightest chance something might not go 100% the way you want to. I'm not even an overly optimistic person here, I just don't see the point in bitching and moaning about something that, as far as the population here is concerned, doesn't exist yet. I'm fine to read dissenting/praising opinions of the rules once they're out and people have actually read them.

SRM,

You actually DO understand the reason people feel that compulsion. Stupid people fear change. They fear it because they don't understand it, or themselves. Then to provide themselves with some measure of comfort, they doomsay the failure of said change in hopes that it will go away.

But you knew that.

That is a phenomenal idea. I might have to pitch a similar idea to the owner of my FLGS.

We are using the adepticon 2012 combat patrol rules (available on their site), with buy-in being dependent on the # of participants. Games can be played any time during store hours, using score sheets to keep track. Win - 3 points, draw-2 points, and losses score 1 point. Pretty simple and easy to manage. Good luck should you choose to get one running at your store!

Before July as in, June 30? Because that's pretty much a given with June 23 as the white dwarf release.

I hope you realize that I was just pointing out that this is just how the internet works. Personally I'm not looking forward to 6th, but I will buy the book, read it, and then decide if I want to play 6th or keep with 5th.

Maybe for some.

I generally don't waste the energy getting excited based on internet rumours. Yes, some people are getting excited now, with the vague rumours that we have about 6th. But how many more would be getting excited if GW had actually put some effort into hyping this over the last couple of months?

There's no point planning for 6th at this point, because we still don't actually know for sure. If nothing else, that's bloody annoying for anyone trying to organise events.

Can you imagine if they'd spent the past 3 months hyping up the next edition of their best selling product in WD? They could have tied the new flyers into a 'sneak peak' of the new flyer rules. They could have used April, May and June to get people ready to go for 6th Ed - maybe even a battle report in that final week between a Dark Angel and Chaos Force (hint hint!). But no. We won't hear squat out of them 'til 10 days prior.

It will be fun to see how the new edition changes army mechanics and the usefulness of different styles of play and units. It will (hopfully)present new challenges for already powerful armies under good players and maybe breath new life into some armies and/or units. As a newb I'm excited because I've only really been actively playing for the last year and a half or so, so I'm excited to start a fresh edition and play it through. i'm a little worried because there are some things about 5th edition 40k that I really prefer to fantasy and if any of the fantasy bound rumors are true I'll have some pills to swallow but shaking things up a little should be good for the game. Extended mission combination just as an example. There is also a glimmer of hope that as games workshop ages through editions it works out more and more refined and precise rule sets and get better and better at serving it's customer base. Granted like any company progress will remain behind the curve of what people want but that's just how it goes.

You mean to have the FLGS clear out their GW stock to make room for other games. That is what my local store is doing, and they had an amazing selection of GW including everything from Epic to Warmaster.

oh boy.... hilarious That needs a youtube video
But can you really imagine?

Personally The release of a new edition doesn't scare me nor does it make me think that I should just keep playing an outdated edition because it's *better*

I have been playing this game through all but the rogue trader edition and there are things that I like and dislike about every one of them. I'm sure this one will be no different!
New challenges, new models and new stuff to mess around with Doesn't sound like a bad thing to me!

Eh... I welcome the new edition. If only because I am hoping that they will at least attempt at right intelligible rules. I have quit playing 5th for about 7 to 8 months now. I would happily go back to playing 40k if the rules are awesome. But, 5th was just full of grey areas and what-not and it really killed my enthusiasm for the game. I'm sure 6th will peak my interests again. But, I am sure that I will ultimately be disappointed due to shoddy rules. After all, this is GW we are talking about here. You know I'm right...

I got two tournaments this month that I am going to in preparation for Nova this fall. Whats cool is that one of them is on the 30th so maybe if the book comes out then we can shoot the gak about the new rules while playing.

Anyway, the cat's out of the bag, clearly.

Odd that GW hasn't at least told us that everything we've heard so far is a lie.

So the Chaos Terminators Masterclass painting class that is being held at Warhammer World on September 1, 2012 will be to paint the ones from the starter box?

Not to derail I just saw that date and thought it was strange to have a "how to paint chaos" out of nowhere. It was the first What's New in a while.

Playing one more tournament with 5th and looking forward to a new ruleset, played 5th from start to finish.

Way to flippantly dismiss the very reasonable concerns (though admittedly not always reasonably stated) of a heavily invested fan-base. Games Workshop's recent track record with edition changes isn't exactly stellar, and for people that enjoy what they already have, the possibility of losing that game (or active support for it) is something to be concerned about. Don't try to categorize everyone who isn't excited or optimistic about the upcoming edition as "stupid," it just makes you look like some sort of internet troll.

As sad as it is to say, we are probably going to be disappointed. I was exciting about getting into Fantasy when 8th came out. Then I realized the game was 100% random and your strategy does not matter at all because of how random it is. I bet 6th is going to mirror 8th and will be the same way. Hell, I remember hearing rumors that your psychic powers are going to be randomly determined now. Not sure if those were dispelled or not but the game just keeps getting more and more random which makes the game much worse in my book.

Clearly it will be terrible. Let me know how much you want to sell your armies for?

Seriously, the game has a lot of randomness in it now - being a good player is about managing this to desirable results.
