hey lads and ladies... i was not feeling up to banter yesterday... but i was busy with crating gaslights...

and who said the paint it on version? well i came up with that one myself... so come and join me and follow this quick build...

i kinda felt a bit like dave with this one^^:

1. decided to do a four sided gaslight... created the corpus from a 1cm to 1cm square and then made it more conical...

2. added a top...

3.inserted a square tube as a lamp- post..

4. added U-shaped rods for details on each side of the lamp post...

5. added upper rim...

6. sandwich top cone and bottom foot...

overlapping stuff gets corrected once it is cured...

7. scale comparrision with one of my own^^

8.added half round rods as a glashausing for the lantern...

then my wife and me decided that this built is not what i wanted...
because the lamp post is too thick...also way too short... and the overall look is due to the half round housing of the lantern not really in line to the more angular overall look of the thing...

well it was worth a try....

that was yesterdays work...

this....

this is todays work:

after i had a visit at my not too local plastic dealer... (massive, at least for me suply drop of styrene sheat and other goodies...35 €s all in all... my wife awas keeping rather quiet at the sum,...) i wnt to town on a new build...

basically the same design with some better results if i say so myself...

and the scale comparrision...

i am feeling rather smug at myself for getting this done... tho my wife still says she doesnt like the height of that thing...

thanks for watching...

cheers, vik

First of great tutorial clear and easy to follow

Second the first design was a bit small and a bit art nouveau rather than Victorian looking, but I still kind of liked it for that reason, so you could use it for scenery in something else.

Thirdly The last one looks bang on, it fits the period well and the detail is great now stick some paint on it

Although I do agree with your wife it could do with a little more hight, mind you she must be sick of getting the short end all the time LOL

Nice work Vik! I know how ya feel, heat here in WV is so nasty! fans at full and still not enough relief, even with a shower of cool water!

Like that second version the most! has definite character!

It's unanimous! The second one is muc more awesome than the first I see what you mean when you said you feel a bit like Dave, though
Though for 35 euros you could have just bought some regular GW ones from eBay, but that wouldn't have been as fun or impressive

My only comment would be that I like the size of the lamp on the first prototype better. The second one seems overly large, IMHO.

Again, excellent work, mate! Fits the theme perfectly!

and short end... better not mnake assumptions from your own living^^... my wife is quite satisfied^^

the heat shaso... ans my kids are currently playing havok too... bust be one of these rather diffcult stage of growing up... the are atm quite rebbelious...

oh and for your information... paintuing is planned for tomorrow! for definite! after that i can start the massproduction...

I actually like the height of the post. It's the actual dimentions of the lamp part itself that I think are oversized. The first one was a bit smaller and I thought it fit better...

I'm not sure what the things are in the upper right corner, but these are the two lamps that I was thinking of.

at rawson... i am with you... i am at the loss for words here the right names for the parts... the upper lantern body...the light producing bitty... that is too big... that was what my wife said too... and after your opinion and hers i gotta agree... and it will get changed in a later version...

and while the GW stuff is probably grim and dark... see all those skulls for direct clues ... i don´t feel ever using these on my table... regardless of their price and the size of my wallet... IF my wallet had been big enough and filled enough then i´d rather got me some 0 scale train stuff ...after all they do cater for specialists interests too

Fair enough. While we're on the topic of "the light producing bitty", were you thinking grimdark or steampunk? Wait....Is that a stupid question?

Those are both awesome builds Vik! I love how you put all those detail layers on both lamps, it really gives it a great look! I especially like the little arms on the second one, I can imagine banners hung from them or ivy and other vines crawling up them, contrasting nicel with the cast-iron black color!

Wow Vik,

I'm completely with Rogue on this
Nice Lamp Post

The second lamp is awesome and is already screaming steampunk gaslamp. From the build (which is superbly clean and crisp) you can do easy molding and casting - so fit's the bill.
BUT (yeah, you knew this was comin' right?),
I know you can do better
When I saw your initial post on the lamp, I was thinking for myself how would I do it, but due to lack of time, I didn't really think it through.
However, coming back to the original idea of casting, clear resin and the like, maybe it would be worth a different try - eventhough spending 35.-€ already, you may be at the end of your willingness to experiment further, and as said, the current light is already super, and lightyears better than the GW light, which I despise totally.
(Gee why did I even hit fast reply, this is getting long)
So, my (very complicated idea) would be to build the initial glas body, like what you've got in your 1st image, make a mold (really simple bottom-to-top pouring) and cast your glass body from clear resin.
Then take the angular sides, maybe add some more ornamental details to steampunkify it better - if not from plasticcard try some greenstuff, and make 1 mold that you can use for all 4 sides, another for your top, and voila you have a 6 piece clear body steampunk glas latern.
Way over the top, but stunning
...
let me take all this back
You current light is excellent - now simply try to build an additional wall-mount for it, so you can use it in a different style for the dungeon, and you good
Cheers
Klaus

Torches mounted on walls is as old of an idea as humanity, it is not limited to D&D (open your mind LDD) But I agree, a wall-mount version would be easy to do, and would definately give more variety to whatever lamp you make. Even if you can't get these cast up, it should be simple to mass produce them, given your ingenious thinking in basic shapes and layers!
