I agree with Casey a display area/case is the ultimate motivation besides a looming tourney

Nerdfest announced his second annual P&M toss up!

2nd annual Nerdcademy award painting competition!

I'm going to try to be in it... kind of depends how long some other projects take.

Yeah the Nerdcademy awards looks like it could be a spot of fun.

Thanks SL. More in this summary than I thought (which is a good thing).

Man, I'm frustrated. I'm going to enter graven's re-purposing contest and I have what I think is a neat idea using a figure that I absolutely love but never thought I'd have an excuse to paint (given my back-log of 40k figures). However... my current plan required two different figures, one I have... one I don't. A friend of mine has been kind enough to agree to send me what I'm missing, however it hasn't arrived yet (though it is in the mail) and until it arrives, I'm kind of stuck. Aaaaargh! So frustrating...

Nah, it's OK graven. I got the second bit yesterday & it won't work with the first bit. So I've re-thought my original plans and now I have to go out looking for a new first bit. Best chance will be tomorrow over lunch. Once I get bits that work together, it should go together pretty quickly.

Working on a gun servitor for inmygravenimage's re-purposing contest. Here's the build. Re-purposed parts are the body (from a D&D figurine) and an Epic land raider. I designed it to look like a tiny engineering vehicle.

Nice, as I said in Graven's thread, very cool conversion.

You should photoshop the figure to show what parts came from what. Also, why does the servitor arm look semi translucent?

I did. It's in my gallery or you can check on graven's thread. (Can't cut and paste from my phone.)

No idea, it's made of crap resin, maybe it is a bit translucent. The reason there are three mechanical bits instead of one large robotic arm is because the damn thing fell apart while I was working with it. I can't remember who makes these but is bought five of them and they're all junk.

So... as brilliant as my little concoction is... I'm left with a problem (for the competition anyway). A servitor is just a normal model, which means it resides on a simple 25mm base. The thing I've created completely covers a 25mm base, leaving no room to do anything that will gain me any basing points.

I can either eat the basing points, or create a display base of sorts for the comp, then a normal base to transfer it to after the competition is over. I do have an idea for a display base... sort of... vague idea anyway. But it kind of rubs me the wrong way. Seems to me the model should be in it's final (playing) form for judging, not some mocked-up thing to snag a few more points.

Any thoughts on the matter? Bueller? Bueller??

If you make him climbing up a bit of a hill or mound, then you'll have more real-estate to work with, basing-wise.

True, but he fills the correct size base completely, so there's no room for a slope. On a larger base I can do all sorts of things.

Why dont you build the larger base up and use the 25mm base as a insert. Like the Abaddon and Loken model from Forge World.

I don't think any casual gamer would crucify you for using a slightly bigger base.

Casey has a point, but it does matter if this little guy might ever see play at AdeptiCon or one of the local tournaments Gits tends to enter at his FLGS.

But I'm behind the 25mm insert into a larger base idea, I've done that with an older terminator model I have, and I feel you could do it more justice than I could!
