Rollin rollin rollin...

Does this happen every page transition, or only sometimes? I cleared the thread cache both times recently, but maybe this thread is just testing Dakka's plog outer limits

While I prefer a dread, a 5-man deathwatch does sound really cool, especially if one of the members can be from the Tranquility campaign

Maybe to celebrate 500 pages you should get the MW a new bug-free thread!

So we had a large narrative campaign a while back and their was some time issues that came into play and the brain boys came into play - Gits made one which was really good. I do not know if you posted it or not. It is an awesome model.

List .. picture would be have to be giant sized to pick out individual units..
Chapter master would be cool though the fluff supports his Head Libby actually assuming the role after the Badab misunderstanding. He has a cool new figure from Sigur for that.
so how about an Honor guard for him. Something of the Best of the best of the best of show. This will allow you do do something special and give your commander some heavy punchers. Can be kitted out with cool conversions.

Command squads (and honor guard for that mater) are just elite picks these days. No reason they can’t hang with the libbies.

Looking through my codex now. Of the two squads, I think the command squad has more interesting possibilities.

I'd very much like to see a mantis warrior dreadnought! or a command squad with a banner included in the squad :-) and if you don't do a mantis dreadnought I might have to see what's in my bits box lol

Well, Solar_lion beat my head in with something called a Skyhammer Annihilation formation last night. Guys in my local group say it's no big deal but it took out 1/3 of my army in turn 1 & I never recovered after that. I did try the 10th company formation, interesting... it's worth more experimentation.

While not an auto-win button, the skyhammer formation is very strong. 40k is stratifying into different levels of competitiveness, and it’s up there with some of the shenanigans that Eldar can pull.

I like the 10th company formation myself. You trade ObSec for some neat little buffs. It lets you be a little more aggressive with the scout bikers (jink+shrouded=life) and snipers tend not to move all game, so keep it. The precision shots is gravy IMHO, but has some potential if you get lucky.

Speaking of formations, how are your MW doing for qualifying for them? Do you have enough tranquility sternguard to do a 1st company formation?

I not a believer in the 'auto win'. The formations are beatable. I even managed to beat YB wraith host last week, though it took me 3 game to do it. In a way you have to ' get lucky' meaning that one has to have the list aligned to take on the ' cheese' Sometimes I had the tools other times none at all ( last time fighting Gits 4 Knight and a YB's Wraithost )

When you don't have the tools in your list your fighting a losing battle before the first dice throw. Add in all the randomness as the game progresses and you find yourself in frustration.

I don't have to win I just have to have the ability to win. The rest is on me, decisions I make and the luck of my dice. The only game I dislike are the ones where I was never gonna be in the game and its only curb stomp. Uber cheese and WAAC I'll pass on. I don't mind fighting a tough opponent and don't mistake being frustrated as not having a good game.

and... I'll find a way to beat the 4 knight list just be patient.

Thanks for the game. It was interesting to use this formation and see you use the 10th comp. in a real game. Look forward to coming up this fall for big game with the boys!

@insaniak: Thanks mate, like that one myself.

@Nev: To be fare to SL, I really didn't grok what was coming my way even though he did explain it to me at the beginning. Had I taken the mental time to sort it out, I could have lessened (though not eliminated) their initial impact on my forces. I've actually drawn up a list that utilizes that formation (and 3 others) in a way that I think is much less objectionable while still taking advantage of it's special abilities. It's not a "competitive" build, but should be fun to play without being horrible for my opponent to play against. I need to paint up a squad's worth of figures to accomplish it though (various sorts).

As far as formations go... I think the only marine formations I can do are the 10th company and the flyer one. I don't think I have enough duplicates of most other things. I *might* be able to do the TFC/whirlwind formation if I can find & paint up a couple of launchers, but I only have 2 rhino hulls painted up so I'm pretty limited on anything requiring that frame.

What I have (built and painted)...

HQ: A bunch... too many to go through.

Elites:
10x tactical terminators (old metal)
4 normal dreads & a FW iron clad
sternguard

Troops:
2x tac squads + 2 rhinos/razorbacks (Mk-1)
20 sniper scouts + a few heavy weapons
10 cc scouts w/ 2 LS Storms

Fast Attack:
2 storm talons
5 scout bikes
10 assault marines
2 LS / LS Typhoons
3 drop pods

Heavy:
siccaran venator
Mk-1 LR
Mk-1 vindi
2 TFC
various devs (1 squadish, maybe two)
2 grav cent units

Imperial Fortifications:
aegis wall w/ quad gun
bastion (basic paint, not finished)

Boy, that's not a lot. I keep hoping I've forgotten something...

So... this (see pic) plus the flyers, venator and cents.

Hi gang! Back at home. Thanks for being patient over the last couple of days but I was travelling for work so my ability to post cohesive thoughts was curtailed. Went back and tallied all the votes. Looks like the most popular things fall into 4 categories. I'll list each and tell you what I've either got or would be willing to get. The next "round" picks the category only.

Dreadnought: 4 votes
I have a relic contemptor, a daredo & a chaplain dread. All FW. I also have a standard iron clad.

Deathwatch/Command Squad: 4 votes
I'm not inclined to make a deathwatch squad as there's really nothing mantis warriory about it save for a couple of helmets and shoulder pads. I would be willing to do a command squad however. I'm meh on the honor guard from a playing standpoint but I'd be willing to do that as well.

Fortification: 3 votes
I have a partially completed bastion, a couple of the 20-shot automated gun emplacements and a void shield generator. It's a knock-off but you couldn't get a real one for love or money and everyone around here just proxies them anyway. If I did a fortification, I'd fancy it up nicely for the MW. I might be willing to get a fortress...

Land Raider: 2 votes
I have two Mk-1 land raiders and would be willing to get a modern one to paint up for my modern MW. Perhaps even something special from FW.

So, those are your categories. Please pick your top two... second choices will influence the tie-breaker. Polling closes late tomorrow night. This is a clean slate, so you are free to vote as you wish.

I'll be doing some MW painting of my own. Got the bug I guess & I want to try some things and I hate proxying models. I'll be doing 2 SMs with heavy bolters, 2 assault marines with flamers and 2 basic assault marines. All Mk-6 armor (so they match the rest)... I may even do an assault marine as a tranquility vet just for RiTides. I also will be finishing up a couple of ML scouts and touching up the green on all of my scouts as the current color doesn't match the color of the rest of the army.

Yes that would be amazing to see a Tranquility veteran!

On the voting, is it a clean slate or adding to the totals above? I vote dreadnought, then fortification (finishing your bastion, gun emplacement, or void shield generator, whatever is more useful). Same for the dread, I prefer a Contemptor but want you to go for whatever type is most useful to you.

I may have started the deathwatch suggestion, but if you aren't keen on that I put my vote on command squad. Then Fortification as a second choice.
