Looks awesome!

Noob question; what are you using for masking the sword bits or whatever when you airbrush? I am shocked to see how clean and black that hilt is after all that spray! (And I have yet to do much more than base coat and zenithal highlight with my brush :()

Cheers dude Sometimes, when I enter a thread with a fullsize image, my browser stretches to try and fit it and starts side scrolling, but not often, so I wasn't sure if it was meant to scale to browser size or not as the intended behaviour

Thanks so much guys, the shots aren't great as I was painting him for 8 hours and half dead, but I'll be able to get better ones as he progresses and gets a bit more contrasting for the camera to see

The best part of the photo is the black bevelled edge along just the bottom. No idea how it got there. Can't even see an option for that in Gimp. It's stunning.

I use the king of office supplies!

Just make sure the paint is super dry before pressing it on. A quick go over with a hairdryer should do the trick

Haha

I think I'm gonna do it up to glowing turqoise like the lens and sword, he has a super limited colour palette so the only other option would be up to white which I don't think would suit as well.

Omg, I know, so frustrating :(

They aren't even mold lines, they are like, gaps?

He was surprisingly gappy for such a lovely figure, and the majorty of the joints have a relatively obvious seam. I tried filling and filing them down a little but have no greenstuff so they are still visible which is very annoying.

Do GW still sell that awesome liquid Greenstuff?

I really liked that, it was great for filling in and then scratching off excess later

Brilliant, gonna get me some of that.

I find greenstuff hard to work with, but that suff is so good for filling tiny gaps without leaving a noticeable bump.

That was my biggest gripe with this lad. The kit is gorgeous and fits together really well, but there are quite a few gaps which is super frustrating.

I hate to say this Iffy... but I think nearly all of those are just supposed to be covers over instrument packages and such & are typically painted the same way as the rest of the body. The only actual gem on the model is the big thing on his chest and the framed ovals on his sword & shield. I'm sure they'll all look wonderful as gems (I made the mistake of doing something similar long ago on a wraith lord) but you probably made things much tougher on yourself than it needed to be.

You are totally right, he has tiny gems, medium sized ones that I think are meant to be gems, and then massive ovals which look more like design choices to emphasise curves and bodyshape (yowza)

I just really wanted them all to be gems to add the extra oomph of contrast. It was a fun idea till I realised how.. many.. there.. are..

I do think the GW paintjobs on these are lazy though. Look at the shoulder spires, those are definitely meant to be gems, or they would be random lumps and bumps.

The GW paintjobs totally ignore them which is a shame

Wheras this one to me looks way better, like the models detailing aint being ignored

Someone spent a long time sculpting those, it's a shame to not pick them out I think :(

I agree with Gits. Though a nice paint job the ' all gems painted' version looks too much like a 'lite bright'

But, I get you Iffy. Like I said... I've already done it because I felt that way too. But it does make the painting take forever.

I think having that many, that bright, with a glow on top, does overpower things a wee bit alright.

My plan with this was to have dark red/black gems like on the Fire Prism which I hope will add to it and not overpower it, but it's going to be exciting to see how it progresses

This dude is still technically a tester for the scheme, his whites are gonna be shadowed too after some awesome feedback I got.

Gitsplitta wrote:Wow, talk about a lazy paintjob... that wraithknight... uugh.

So much time taken on the edging and blending, then so much detail ignored, such a shame I think!

Gotta get some of that. I have white poster tac that is... ok. Sorta. I also need to find a cheapo hairdryer for this and heat curing molds. I have a feeling the lady wife would object to me making the basement her hairdryer's new home!

If you are really serious about the gems, paint them and the surroundings to look like little meteors flying through the space of his body. Which I think is a Moby song?

I have a pretty quick recipe for gems but there are so many on this thing that it is taking 5ever.

I really want to move on and start offsetting the reds with some turquoise and his whites but they still have quite a way to go, and all the gems on the weapons have still to be done! Jaysus.

The good thing is that the reds are emphasising his other colours while not making him look much brighter.

Once the whites are down, they will bring out the blacks, but I am reaching that point now where I want to see him finished and trying not to lose patience as each stage is such a slow process on such a giant model.

I like these shots cause you can really see the little galaxy I put a lot of effort into on his front groin plate.

The groin is the most important plate.

Wow, that is looking really good! I definitely agree with the "paint all the gems" approach you've taken, but only because you've done them in a nicely subdued manner - very well done

I swear I'm getting 50/50 "I love them all being painted!" and "Those are way too many gems!" hahaha

This is great though, I love how everyone has different tastes and I think I'm going to hold out on my final opinion of the gems until everything is finished, as I think the glowing turquoise and his whites are going to overpower them a bit in the end and they won't be as noticeable as they are right now.

This guy is still technically a test for this scheme as I'm painting up a full wraithhost with it in the next couple of months, so the next lad might end up with way less gems ^^

Yeah, one of my issues with GW is that they cram on details on their models just for the sake of it, and then give no reasoning for what most of them are.

And then they don't tell the painters what to do (or maybe they do), and the "official" paint-jobs don't do the models justice. Case in point, the gems or not gems on all the Eldar stuff. Also something I noticed when I came to paint one, the DV Helbrute; they spent all that time to sculpt tons of fleshy details on the model, and then paint the whole thing red with no difference between the armour and the flesh...

Speaking of gems, I like to do a split of some as gems and some as armour bumps (for gear etc.).

You're doing a lovely job on that knight, If'. Keep it up.

Unacceptable. You must gem all the gems that can be gemed at this point.

I think your scheme, both the starscape and the gems, form a cohesive look. It's pretty stellar! I may have already made that joke.
