Subject: Quest for Perfection, recycling old plastic
Nice work on the latest batch of old-school there. I like the Skellys and the Goblins the most, since they both hark back to the old days as well as to what I've been working on myself recently. Good stuff!
Yeah I really like your skeletons and their freehand shield designs. Probably what got me thinking of gorgons.
In other news:
THE SALE OF THE CENTURY!!!
if you like Pratchett, Iain Banks, Stephen Baxter, Ben Bova or Arthur C. Clark then you should click on this link and buy stuff, its all in aid of a great cause (getting me more skeletons)
Welcome back, Weety. Nice work on the skeletons, shields look great.
Good luck scaring up some hobby funds.

Yeah the orcs work out these days I guess. They are total guido gorillas. Back in the before time they had bandy legs and spaghetti arms. Only the really big uns had muscle.
We refuse to take sides in this anymore. And we refuse to let you turn us against one another. We know who we are now, we can find our own way between order and chaos...
It's over because we've decided it's over. Now get the hell out of our galaxy! Both of you.

Hello dakkanoughts. Glad you like my orcs. A really old classic regiment is quite special to find so complete. I think these turned up at the car boot for a pound each. A lucky day.
I've been delicately pruning some dwarves today. I didn't like the way that they were all the same dwarf. so I gave them some arm swaps. I wonder if I can do anything about their faces and beards...
Do you own any Juan Diaz out of print Daemonettes? I just bought some and I'm super happy about it cuz they are the reason I started WH.
Yeah... Not the best person to talk to no more, great fandom(sarcasm)

Those the ones? I think you mean the newer ones after the daft looking "big claw" ones
This was back in my purple sky phase. I'd like more but they are very expensive now. Only the big claws can be had at reasonable price and they just look ugly.

Well I'm on holiday. But seeing as I am impoverished and already live in a holiday destination I thought I'd stay put. Sometimes its fun to pretend to be Scandinavian (goes with my hair) so I can really get into the fake tourist vibe.
Anyway I got some bits done today.
This fella is a cannon crew. But I think he also looks like a wandering beer seller, or just a man with a staff having a pint
Matey here can join the retinue. He is a grizzled veteran by the looks of him.
And here is the retinue so far (they could also be a castle garrison or city guard maybe).
Nice work on the last few batches. Work is killing me at the moment, and so I'm barely on Dakka anymore at the moment. Always great to see old-school orcs up and painted. Makes me want to drag out some of mine as well, but in their own time. The retinue is coming along strongly with the increasing numbers. I also like what you're doing with the dorfs to make them a bit more individual. I reckon different hair/beard colours can get you partway, along with some variation in Helmet metal. Beyond that, it's a bit hard. Perhaps an eyepatch for one of them?
Azazelx sounds like you need a holiday. As far as individualizing serfs goes I am all out of brettonian bowmen, which is probably for the best. They were just scrap I had lying around. I need some melee troops next but it depends what I can scrounge from junk.
Glad to hear that red harvest because its new paintjob should be finished today.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Pics. Maybe needs rust and more shadows...

Grud on a greenie! I'm away from your blog for a scant couple of years (my last post on here was in '12!!) and all of a sudden it's old skool fantasy - not that that's in any way a bad thing! I'm being swept by nice warm waves of nostalgia (especially by the orcs and chaos dudes) - had so many of them back in the day!
Just out of curiosity, what prompted the move away from grimdark? Like I say, much love for the new (to me anyway) stylee, but since there's so many pages of blog, a brief synopsis will be much easier to digest! Had a bit of a hiatus what with a brand new mini on the scene (he's 16 months now, almost walking and talking - when he can stand for a reasonable length of time without crawling away I plan to proxy him for a Titan...)
Anyway, it's good to see you're still producing top notch minis - will have to make sure I don't leave it so long in future. Blink and you miss it!
Weets, I've half a mind to send you my space skeleton and let you see what you can do with it. I think it would do much better joining the honor roll here amongst the beautiful models than sitting in my case.
It would be a fine addition to the collection. A rare and venerable mini the space skeleton... Its yours to give.
Hi Archroy I remember you! Indeed its been a long time, hope you are enjoying fatherhood.
Why fantasy? Well for me, in literature as in miniatures, fantasy and sci-fi have very different feels to them. Sci-fi is forward looking and full of power and violence and change, and in light of the future warhammer presents it can be quite depressing. Obviously other sci-fi can show a more optimistic future (RIP Iain Banks) but no-one believes in that anymore. The future holds only war, war never changes etc. Fantasy on the other hand is nostalgic, pretty, quaint even. I find it more relaxing to contemplate the past than the future. Fantasy is gentler and has more style.
So to sum up I switched to fantasy because of vague feelings. Artists are supposed to feel inspired and I followed my muse.
Oh and I'm playing advanced heroquest with my partner and needed heroes & monsters.
Makes perfect sense - the 2 genres have very different vibes! I'd love to paint up some fantasy models, especially the older ones, just for the enjoyment of it, but I just don't have the time... Especially now I have a new harlequin army on the go (the core of which is almost 2 boxes of the old RTB06 box set from way back when - http://www.solegends.com/citrt/rtb06harlequins.htm)...
I like the kinda twofold level of nostalgia and quaintness of the older fantasy models too - the kind you mentioned viz the general outlook and feel to fantasy as a genre, and also the feel of the models themselves and that era of gaming etc from 20-30 years ago. Early 40k has it to an extent, but not like old fantasy figs...
So looking forward to seeing more minis and feeling that nostalgia buzz!!
If only I had the fine motor skills to execute the diamond patterns like you did... Really nicely done, and a suitably psychedelic palette too... Mine are a more muted scheme in comparison, with none of those fiddly checkerboard things! I've stared a blog, which I might even maintain regularly, so if you feel so inclined you can see my Harlies at http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/651860.page
These orcs were rescued from a box of junk, daubed in snot green. I think they are very old plastic? Thought I'd try out a little freehand.
I wonder if its time to get more ambitious with the freehand and do a flag or a vehicle side panel with some mad painting... I saw the mona lisa painted on a flag once, they'd even got her smile right.
weetyskemian44 wrote: Azazelx - oh so that's what the spikes are for... There is a crew and they are getting painted. Slowly...
Yeah, here's the original Ad photo, which is pretty much the box art:
Spoiler:
I like the look of those Harlies. Lovely detailing on the diamonds, and you've kept a unified palette so they look like a troupe together.
The Orcs look good with the updated shields, and I like the freehand work you've done on them. Always keep up the freehand, IMO. For whatever reason, it's the thing that gives me some of the greatest pleasure when I paint models.
Those Orcs are from the Warhammer Fantasy Regiments box.Truly old-school plastic army building. I still have a bunch of orcs, some painted goblins I broke in a fit of rage/stupidity, and very few of the others. I wish I had more of them.
