I started on some battle damage on the raven. Used codex grey then boltgun and in spots added in some mithril. Seems to work fairly well, I just need to add it all over the raven. Pictures will be forth coming.

In between debating on where to do the damage and managed to work on the last few ice angel assault marines. Only three left and all fifty of them will be finished.

Huron will be painted once I finishing remembering how to paint my tiger claws again. It's been two years since I last painted one. Pics will soon be forth coming of my WIP on the other marines.

My terminators are finally en route to my house. I only need to locate a few more missile launchers and I'll have everything for my army list. I have ALL of next week off so be prepared for some massive updates then. My goal will be to make some progress and have an update at least four times next week starting on Monday. Please hold me accountable!

Here is my teammates home made Thulsa Kane model for his Executioner army.

Still very WIP but he added on a book, per his rules, replaced the crozius with the executioner axe that Thulsa brings to battle. I didn't get a picture of the back pack but he added some nice little touches on the back pack, heads and things.

Time for audience participation! What badab army should the helmet be that my flamer marine is holding be?

Its great to see your process on how you do the orange. Very similar to the mixes I ended up using- though a bit brighter. Im excited to see more paint on the guys!

@cormapanda Thank you sir. Welcome back. I should have another update tomorrow and I should be able to get more done tomorrow then I did today. The plan is to have a couple more marines browned and another level of orange highlighted up on the flamer guy at least.

@Solar_lion I think I'll do a space shark head. I actually have a red scorpion helmet to use some where else.

@ Ramos Asura Thanks Ramos. Our systems maybe similar but yours still turn out way better. As I add more pictures please give me some tips and pointers as I go along. I don't have a lot of guys to paint for this army so I need to make sure they look good. My guys look great from about three feet but once you get up close its another story. It also doesn't help that I am sharing a board with Gitsplitta and Solar lion. I may just have to have my guys in the back, lol.

And hey your stuff is better than most I've seen. I think its looking great! All painting really ends up being is just time and practice.


Maybe the first thing I can probably mention is your color progression.
I notice you leave just a little bit of black in the recesses, giving the panels and recesses shadow. I usually find straight up black to be "unnatural" looking, as it outlines the colors like a cartoon (for lack of a better term). What I usually do for everything short of areas of absolute shadow is to paint it a shadow color similar in hue to my main color.
As an example, lets look at that WiP you posted, and the Termi I painted in Nerdfests comp:



Where as all your panels and armor joints are outlined in black, mine are in a dark brown. This gives the different areas shadow, while still maintaining a similar color family between the details.

I use several layers as well in this orange- Starting with Terracotta, I washed it heavily with Devlan Mud, making sure to let it pool a bit in the recesses. I then brought everything but the shadows and recessed panel lines back up to Terracotta. This I find is one of the most important and useful steps in painting shadowed areas. The wash helps create a sort of gradient, then little highlight layers sell the effect. I progressively added more and more Blazing Orange to the highlights until I was satisfied with the color.


Hope that helps a little bit. Just my take on painting, ymmv.

Your guys were awesome!. And having a bright colored army attracts a lot of attention. Like Moths to a flame. Not necessarily the painting. ( TAXI!!! ) Besides yours and Steves camo patterns are way more difficult to produce.

I think starting with black as a base might make it difficult. thou it's make the orange a bit darker. When I did my penal trooper I started with a white undercoat and started with a darker mix of Orange. Hummm indeed!

@ Solar - I think I prefer my guys to be darker. My guys have a very autumn palette and I don't necessarily want to lighten them up. Keep in mind the above level of orange still has a ways to go.

@ Ramos - I may try your method on a test marine. I see your point with the lines but I'm almost afraid that your method will work too well and then I'd have to redo my other guys to have some uniformity. I'll build another tactical marine today and prime him up for the test, meanwhile I need to start painting so I get have another update for all of you today!

Ren & Stimpy are well within my realm of animation awareness & I did watch them from time to time when the show was popular. Unfortunately the show was pretty asinine... even for the style low-brow, gross humor show that it was. Sponge Bob borrows from it in certain ways, but is more intelligently written.

Hmmm... that's kind of trolly. Sorry Ice, didn't mean to rain on your nostalgia parade.

11/20 painting update: I added the next layer of orange/brown onto flamer marine after giving him a nice delvan mud wash. I added brown onto another marine and I did some easy dry brushing onto all of the five marines bases. Overall, I didn't get as much done as I would've liked. I took some pictures but I am not happy with the lighting so I'm going to try and take some more here in just a minute.


Okay, here is an updated picture of my WIP today. For some reason when I switched lenses and stood about 12 feet away the picture came out much more to my liking.

So, which is the most advanced??

@Ramos: I'm not sure if this is what Ice is shooting for... but that "black lining" technique is very indicative of the way GW painters went about their business back when the Badab War first made it's appearance in WD. While it may not be the most sophisticated painting approach, it does make them look more like they come from that era. Just a thought...
