Ironclad were the nicknames given to Civil War era ships, Like a battleship, they were meant to absorb or deflect (cannonball) hits rather than dealing damage. The idea was you can absorb hits and get in close.

I am ex-US Military, I was trained to live out in the field w/o electricity, of course we did also have 45k generators that ran on JP-4 for the Missile systems and launch computers but for the most part it helped a suburban boy learn to be a man in the wild.

If you have a large pot to cook with, open fire heating would give you hot water to sponge bathe with if needed Vik.
Cold sponge/washcloth bath will just wake you up!

Yeah, he'd have to buy it, German laws do not smile on folks just ripping the park trees apart. Every branch our trucks broke in my unit field exercises, every tire rut, could cost money if we did nothing to fix the impact to the environment over there. Kill a farmer's chicken in Germany and you not only pay for the chicken but all the eggs it may have laid for so many layings in it's life.

Ok to try and explain myself from earlier.
In my head (which is probably wrong.)(and please feel free to correct me)
Ironclad is a timber structure with small sheets of iron, riveted through to girders on the inside, cladding the exterior of the tank/ship.
Riveted steel is large sheets riveted through each other to form the surface of the tank/ship.
In the hope that a picture paints a thousand words....

For some reason the tank from wild wild west popped into my head, but it doesn't look anything like this , guess maybe it was just the idea of a steampunk tank that had me thinking of it.

shaso is right... tho i still wonder where to add steampower devices... a round object just has no backside...
and cam... brilliant explaination! i totally agree (even tho i didn´t knew before...) it makes sense and explains the terms quite excellent!...also... i like your handwriting!...looks very flowing...and readable...which mine is all not
and you literally took the look from my mind i have planned for the tank rivtescheme...^^
at all those open fire cookers... i bet if i ever need to light a fire outside for cooking my meal or washing my ugly mug...then i think the apocalypse is already there... so no worrying anymore about fire authorities
at HK1x1
most excellent picture material... the explosive diagram is very useful to me, as is the underskirt view...
also...note those portholes for the cannons... just bare holes...well i think there da vinci didn´t try hard enough
we riveteers can do better, eh? right!
so...update time!
fist the current fullscale shot:
you see there is a turret (it will remain rotatable...) i think four models would be able to stand there (with bases!)
and these are the new detail additions...
first the tracks got some more details (coffey stirrers )
second, firing portholes, later on these will have nice weapons for squishing the heretics...
there are four of these on the lower tier...
and third...the raiding party doors...there will be four on each cardinal points...
these will get nice ornamental decorations i have to decide upon...
after that i will have to figure out what to do about the upper tier and then lastly the turret...
if you have ideas for where or how to handle the steampower devices as the boiler and some smoke stacks...
let me know!
cheers, vik

Nice detailing Vik. As for the steam powered looking bits: What do you have planned for the upper section (below the turret)? You could just have Ork-y/steampunk looking exhausts sticking out of the "rear" (opposite where the door is), Or, maybe a caricature of a rhino with two sets down each "side". Or a huge smokestack out the top of the turret (although this results in questions of how it works when the turret rotates and would reduce the available space in the turret). Just some ideas for you.

Both a step-by-step and the lamp-geometry instructions would came in handy, will be waiting for them.
As for steel vs. iron cladding, googled both and found no great difference besides that (cooper clad steel jumped to the searchlist front too, but that is a substitute for solid copper wires).
Ironclads was also the name of the first armoured warships (mid to late XIX century) that were used - among others - during the American Civil War (Not much more, at first, than iron-plated wooden ships)

and i will post the how to tomorrow...!
at dr H...
Or, maybe a caricature of a rhino with two sets down each "side".
that i didn´t get...please explain further...
and i don´t want to have that tank look too orky... so...everything needs to look suitably convincing... not just bluetacked for orks this works... but the =]_= -quisition won´t have it that way
the turret will have probably the main gun(s) mounted to it... so it definatly leaved the upper tier for anything steampowered indeed...

You know how rhinos have the exhausts at the side, pointing up?
Like that, but out the upper section (not the turret) and steampunk-y.
Just the positioning really was what I meant... you can have as many exhausts as you see fit.

Well that looks brilliant. Love it.
On boilers etc. I think I would just have exhausts at the back, actually coming out the lower half. Allowing the upper freedom. As it is definitely Imperial a suitable pair of smoke stacks rising up from the back will look perfect.
And thanks guys for the corrections, it was all in my head, which is a strange place at the best of times. But it still stands. I would rather see her clad in smaller plates, pitted and solid iron, with brass fixings. As only Grand Master Vik does so well.
