Indeed! I just picked up some flesh shade this afternoon (literally about 2 hours ago), so I am itchin to get going. I plan to use it on the 3-4 Wood Elf faces I have in the queue for painting (the rest have bone helms...

I don't have a pic of them assembled, but the helms are the old Elk Skull Standard top -

Well the painting itch hit me thanks to you. So I based (rather nicely I think) some Goff Rockers, primed em and now they are sitting with some nice skin tone. Pretty stoked to see these guys finished

I'm still trying to get my scheme down in my mind for the IG and i've almost worked it out I think, so now it's input time from my mates

I was originally going to have plain fatigues on my troops, but after much googling I decided that a subtle camo would still work for me! as i've already ordered 'The Army Painter Desert Yellow Primer' it needed to work in with the yellowish sandy type of colour it is, I thought using the 3 colour desert cam as inspiration would work it's still quite light and gives me option to use some older pots of paint I have at home, i don't intend on making it 'exact' but close to it.

Next question is spot colour? shall I paint the armour/webbing a dark brown or black? and will it look good if i paint the helmets to match or should I paint them a contrasting colour as i sometimes see white or blue helms on peace keepers etc.?

So, as you can see i'm nearly there with my plans for the force, now i just need the force but any input would be appreciated, I am hoping to theme the army around a elite group of soldiers who mainly trained in dusty inhospitable climates and were unsupported for periods of time while they conducted rapid raids and insertions before being pulled out and re deployed.

Tallarns! If you don't like that, I would go with Dr H's idea. sounds elite, like the angry squig said, but easier to shade and highlight. maybe black webbing, though, because it makes more sense for the materials that webbing is usually made out of.

Dudes wasuuuuup!

Hey, remember how a little while ago I got a bunch of those cheap 28mm buildings off ebay from Russia? well, I finally put them together this morning I bought 6 sets and went about creating a variety of different structures with some length and height, it made HEAPS!! crazy enough now for an entire village of sad ruins for my troops to scout through!

I thought i'd also lay down the base colour onto my pile o barrels and i 'was' going to just do my usual trick of a base colour and weathering that's then dabbed with liquid mask and sprayed with another colour so I can pull the main paint off the mask to reveal chips, but as I started I liked the way the colours looked and started trying new things so I wiped a damp finger over the barrels each time I put paint on them and used this to reveal the base metal through heavy rusting until it looked right in my eyes! still a bit more work to do on them as well as the actual base and some shadow shading then it's done.

next one will be another barrel based theme, but i'm hoping to do a fuel pump refuel-er for my Guard!

and on a slightly different note, I was talking in Dave's thread about a boat my dad scratch built about 27 years ago, and it peaked some interest so I went to his place today and interviewed him about it and took a bunch of pics, the more I studied it the more I realised exactly how talented he is and how much effort this would have been to create! I'll put the pics up somewhere when I find an appropriate place for them

By the sound of it, you want to go either Tan or Coyote brown for hard armour and possibly webbing/plate carriers, etc
Ranger green is also a possibility (the colour of some of the pouches, second pic)

Black looks okay, but the pic linked above is a VBSS (Visit, Board, Search, Seizure) - aka naval guys who check out ships - camo not really a factor. I'd go for coyote myself, though. If you're making a LRRP-themed force.

For a nice coyote brown I mixed 50% Vallejo 923 Japanese Uniform WWII and 50% Vallejo 879 Green Brown into a dropper bottle.
For the 3-colour coffee stain uniforms, I've used (Vallejo) Pale Sand/Iraqi Sand, Deck Tan and Saddle Brown. Pretty easy to sub in others, though.

And yes, I need to photograph my IG. If I can find my USMC I'll photograph them, too. Having just bought a house and moved is awesome in many ways, but a pita when it comes to finding things...

If you want to get excited, you can try to "snakeskin camo" their helmets. I guess you could do it by draping some stocking material over their helmets tightly and giving it a quick blast with your airbrush... real troops tend to use scrim etc with a spraycan or two - even the plastic from a bag of oranges gets you the right kind of pattern, and I've heard of it being used. It also gets used on weapons.

Wow, thanks Scipio! that was a great bit of easy to follow info for me! I think I might give the snakeskin helmets a go too, I believe I can get the look as far as the actual camo goes, i don't think I'll be aiming for an exact match to the Coffee stain pattern, more of a homage to the style so my patterns will be similar shades and larger splotches but not visually identical, although I will paint my webbing and armour in a dark yellowish brown sort of like coyote brown

The snakeskin is a great idea! something I personally haven't seen on an IG force yet (unless of course you post some pics ) I should have some ruined stockings at home from my last saturday night with KingCracker ..... I joke....... he kept ALL the stockings!!

speaking of KC, I want to get everyone keen!! including myself so when it all arrives I can get into it and always have something on the go for ya! and the way i've been buying stuff for it lately there's going to be something on the go for a while! so far I've got GW models for the main force to work with and parts for conversions from, Kromlech,Mad Robot, Anvil Industries and Forgeworld!

only thing i'm concerned with is the Army PAinter Desert Yellow primer lets hope it looks good as a base for my main colour on everything!

The full boxed game is pretty expensive now, especially if you're planning on building your own corridors and tiles and using your own models. I was lucky to get one for £60 quid locally. Decided to use the terminators for my BA successors and now get to choose what to use for my SH troops. Thinking about buying a couple of the new death wing boxes, but I've got time to hang about and see if there are any other new boxes on the horizon.

I really like the armorcast one's. Kinda costly though. Maybe space hulk is a good place to start trying to construct my own decent terrain. It can't be too hard to make these tiles out of plasticard and things. And the small bite-size nature of it would certainly make it less intimidating.

Economically, a few Hirst Arts molds and a 50lb. box of Dental Plaster would be the cheapest way to build all the corridors you need.

I know, I know, you're probably right (of course you are!) I just have a strange aversion to using plaster? I don't know whether it's the weight or the fact it's porous? plus I've never used it before so I'm a scaredy cat! and looking at the Armorcast ones i have...... ideas forming.......

No..forget everything you know about Plaster of Paris-completely different stuff.. Dental stone is not porous at all when cured, it's smooth, but it does have a nice weight to it.

much more durable! you can tell by putting both casts in a plastic bag.. Cheap plaster like PoP will leave powder everywhere, Dental plaster will not. You can drop it 3 feet to a concrete floor without them breaking.

The fenris ones are resin casts. I suppose you could make them out of plasticard and wire mesh, I looked into it a while ago but have zero modelling skills so will be most likely going down the fenris route if I ever get that far or there's mdf versions by Warmill and another ebay seller.

I think the zone mort rules will work better or the kill team rules for a good skirmish game.

Oh my god, Oh my god, oh my god!! my army arrived! I'm so excited I started straight away organising it and cleaning it up

well, firstly here's what I scored of the Dakka swap shop (thanks Killjoy00)

3 chimera's

Leman Russ on sprue

a bunch of troops

2 sentinels and a command squad

2 nib valks

What else did I get today?...... Ooooh yes! MadRobot Miniatures heads & Kromlech running legs and backpacks!

So, after I gazed at my haul with a massive smile on my face for a while I chucked on some Molotov cd's and went about cleaning them all up and starting the conversion work! I started by running the scalpel over each mini to get the worst of the mold lines off them, then I cut the end of the lasguns off as well as the las clip and ripped their heads off then cut some rod and made a new barrel for the guns!

a couple of Vox guys had broken backpacks so i also fixed them up too

here's the Vox guys, I left the heads on a couple and used some putty to make goggles for them and I drilled out the spot where the aerial went and replaced them

a few sarges so far, colonial defense heads.... looking good!

Now, enough of the blurry photo's you cry! I shall now show you what else I did today! I nearly finished my barrel pile, just need to give it another dry brush and some more water effects and she'll be sweet!

and I got some more work on the mini for Kitch102, the main model is done and I needed to continue the banner for him, it's coming together I think and i wanted to get a kind of embossed satin look (sort of)

Phew! what a day and I've another day off tomorrow! what else can i possibly do
