I can highly recommend this tutorial - been using it on my orks and they are getting finished at an impressive rate. Also painted my Ork Blood Bowl team in similar colours using the same technique.

Yup! It's more of a time saver with Badmoonz since you're only doing one base coat for both the skin and clothing/armor, but you can just paint whatever color over it that you want.

Yellow is a nice base coat for red since it's nice and bright to start.

You may even want to experiment with washing BAAL Red (or current equivalent) over the yellow to see if that gives you the same effect as the skin/yellow clothing.

The wash-over base coat technique also works with white primer as well, it gives them a duller, more earthy look that goes well with a more muted scheme.

Thank you so much, I've been agonizing over how to deal with yellow for my badmoons and this helps a lot.

My next army will be a Bad moons Ork Warband, I love yellow on the table top. It will be quite insipid when I play the local Imperial Fist player, so might tone it back, with a dark blue and Yellow Combo.

Great guide going to use this for my new Bad moon army

The Army Painter sprays are colour and primer by the way so no need to prime white before the yellow.

I use the AP sprays on space wolves/skaven etc never needed to prime first turns out great.

Years ago I started my orks off as evil suns. But with it being the most common clan around here I decided to change it to Bad Moons. I am using this method to paint them with little changes. And they look great. Thanks for doing this tutorial. This tutorial and others on scratch building have really got me back into my orks and playing.

I have used AP spray Daemonic Yellow and found that the coverage over the new darker gray plastic wasn't great, it needed multiple coats and started to kill the detail.

Krylon white then Daemonic Yellow made for 2 very thin coats by comparison but YMMV

I also just picked up Krylon dual action Yellow paint+primer which has a gloss finish, haven't had a chance to test it out yet but I'm optimistic since having tried their dual version black.

I'm hoping that the gloss finish leaves more detail on the raised surfaces.

I'm also going to start experimenting with oil washes in lieu of the GW washes to see if the results are better, will submit some updates once I try it out.

Bear in mind that the new washes don't stain flat surfaces in the same way that the 'old' ones did so using the newer washes might not get the same effect. You may have to use both the new shades and the new glazes to get the same effect as you would using the old washes.

Awesome tutorial. Such a quick way to paint up a whole slew of orks. I like the idea of just applying thraka wash over pure yellow....thats brilliant!

This tutorial didn't turn out well. I painted an Ork's skin yellow, but the Thraka green pooled heavily and did not smoothly tint the skin green. I don't belive it's really suitable for this scale of tint.

To help with washes pooling correctly put a coat of gloss over the miniature first before the wash.. The surface texture will help spread it smoothly..

Just a warning. I was using the one coat yellow technique when I first started painting Badmoons a couple of years ago, and before I found AP I was using a gloss yellow Krylon.
The single coat was awesome, but trying to wash over it was just terrible. Gloss paint has a TOTALLY different effect on washes and glazes. It's not terrible, but its also not anything like washing a flat shade.
I'd start with a single model and test it. You might not like it. I didn't.
