For about 15 minutes I wasn't into the game... but that was because the guy showing me how to play hasn't played in months and was basically reading then rulebook for me. We played 2 ties vs 2 x-wings, even though I was like double his points it was still a well fought match and I blew him up in the end. The second game we played was 50 points and the guy who gave me the advanced was playing Vader with a missile, squad leader and the other guy was playing a tie interceptor. I took a regular red squadron pilot with r2 and took a rookie pilot with r5-k6.
My rookie got a kill, but Vader was too much for my team.

Yup it's definitely easy to pick up and hard to master... the cards, subtle manoeuvring and list building are very in depth later on... at the end of the day though, it is a dice game and the gods of luck will decide, it's always fun!

Finally finished it up, besides the acrylic base I am going to make for it to make it playable, but the model itself is done -
Templates ordered off ebay seller Willybaby... not the greatest, they look good now but I had to spend several hours sanding and then polishing them, and filling in the paint... the finishing on them as they came was extremely, extremely rough, I can't recommend them though I am happy with them after finishing my own work. Along with them though if you notice there are also the CoreSec Fire Arc Templates, which were perfectly tooled. Not really neccesary but I like a robust collection what can I say -
Then we have Hammer and Forge Asteroids. Unlike the previous the acrylic cut and polish on these was immaculate. Unfortunately the asteroids themselves are rather fragile and a great deal of paint rubbed off them in shipping. If I was not planning on re-painting them myself anyways I would not have been too happy about it. I let H&F know about this and they have taken steps to prevent it happening again. I can recommend these overall though, even if you have to repaint them a bit, they look fantastic on the tabletop!
Then we have Battlefoam. As usual, you can count on the quality and intelligence of the layout, but it is a bit pricey. Overall though it has really helped me keep my considerable collection organized -
And finally for the hell of it, a view of the ole cabinets -

Ok, so a few people have been asking, here are some comp shots of one of my repainted x-wings (Wedge, Red2) vs a stock x-wing. Now, the interesting thing here is, that my x-wing is a 2nd generation model, while the other one is a 1st gen.
Just on sculpt and assembly, the difference is huge... there are many seams and panels missing on the 1st gen one particularly on the wings near the engines, the top middle area behind the astromech, and the lascannon mounts. The engines are completely different as well.
Build quality on the original is pretty terrible, the engines are completely skewed, and the lascannons are very badly glued on, pointing all over the place and sitting awkwardly. Of my 6 second generation x-wings, they only had minor deviations, nowhere near the same level of problems.
That being said, after I took these pics I went and painted the older one up and it sure helped a lot, but as a point of interest I thought I would share to those curious about it -

So there has been an ongoing argument in some corners as to whether the A-wing in the game is scale accurate. FFG says LucasArts verified the scale 100% accurate, but vs the movies, the A-wing is huge. Just look at the cockpit vs the x-wing to get an idea of how much bigger it is than it should be.
I watched ROTJ this weekend, or at least I fast forwarded to the ship parts and I can say that in my opinion, it is without a doubt too big in the game. You can see in the deathstar core run, just by the spacing of the engines when the a-wing is behind the x-wing, it is a very small ship. This is also evident in several other scenes, including a scene where you see them in a hangar.
Just to be clear, this shouldn't matter one lick to the enjoyment of the game, which is awesome. You have to be a pretty hardcore scale nut to care, or accept LucasArts decided the movie scale is wrong.
I picked up some WOTC Star Wars Minis Starship Battles A-wings after seeing them posted elsewhere as a more size accurate option. They were dirt cheap on ebay, I got 5 for 20 bucks shipping in. As a fun little project, I decided to repaint them all in the same scheme as my 5 FFG a-wings, just to see what they would look like -
First, the bottom 2 ships in these pics are untouched, the top 3 have 1 coat of grey on em -
Here is a comparison of the Prototype schemed a-wings next to each other and an x-wing, looking at the cockpit, engines and weapons, the smaller version to me makes a lot more sense.
and some only smaller A-wings -
and a look at the paintjobs -
All in all, not sure which ones I will use, the FFG ships are of course nicer, but not by too much if you are willing to put some paint on em. The fronts are quite good, the engines are a bit worse, missing the detail of the angled winglets and the secondary rings. At the size though, no biggie.

Get into it!
Really hoping a good community builds up around the game here at Dakka, there is a ton of great stuff out there on a variety of sites including metalbikini.com and boardgame geeks, lots of DIY rules, scenarios and models etc.
The more people playing, hopefully we can get a bit more dialogue going and eventually open up a new sub-forum

I think you're right about the scale of the A-Wings being a wee bit off - http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/RZ-1_A-wing_interceptor
A-Wing
Technical specifications
Length 9.6 meters
Width 6.48 meters
Height/depth 1.91 meters (fuselage only)
3.11 meters (including stabilizers)

X-Wing (T-65)
Technical specifications
Length 12.5 meters

It's all over the place, if there is one thing I have learned it is that SW tech specs vary wildly... the Executor for example, started off being 8km, but over the course of 20 years it creeped up to the current 19km... all based on people pointing out it was inconsistent to the movies over and over again.
For me, the A-wing looks to be about half the length of an x-wing at most, maybe even a touch less. It is a tiny ship in all the ROTJ shots. After having gone back to look at it purely to eyeball the ship over the weekend, there are tons of shots showing it to be very small, the quickest, easiest way to guesstimate is the scenes where you see it and other ships in close proximity from behind, particularly the DS core run at the point where the a-wing and the other fighter split right to head back to the surface, it is closely tailing an x-wing, and just looking at the engines you can see it pretty clearly just how big it should be.
All in all, really not a big deal either way, some people personally find it to be really bothersome but I don't particularly mind in terms of the game, it has no effect. It was a fun little side project though, and I am always up for personalizing so there we go!

So it isn't just Space Marines that have suffered from size creep over the years
It was a fun distraction for me while at work, but as you say I can't see too many people getting bent out of shape over the exact scale of them.

Alright, all done! Crazy!
Custom cut acrylic base, check
Custom created ship card for base, check
Custom created pilot card, check
1st set of rules to playtest, check.
Correllian Corvette is done, barring an update to the pilot cards after playtesting is done!
Here you are, base first -
With custom card insert -
Needs a bit more trimming but it worked, 'glued' it down with latex masking fluid, which when dry will come right off if I want it to.
Here is a view of the card and the ship template for clarity -
So now it will be off to playtesting... if you are an x-winger and want to help, join in the misc. games forum! All you need is a 16x7" piece of cardboard to join in

That is amazing! If I didn't know better I would say that the corvette was an official model with all those cards and whatnot. The paintjob is of course, stunning as par your usual work.
Also loving the smaller scale A-Wings, I think there is no doubt that you own the best X-Wing army to date!
Now all you need is a large Imperial ship to go toe to toe with the Corvette, not sure what would fit the bill though since a Star Destroyer is out of the question..

Usual epic standard, I agree with Cain in regard to it looking like an official model. You've really eleminated the "toy" look from it.
You should write up a battle report if you ever get round to using it, I'm sure we'd all be interested in seeing it in action.

Corvette looks great man! Jin and I were kicking around ideas for this the other day, and I was thinking that maybe capital ships should come in sections, treated as three different bases, so that you can focus fire engines/turrets/shield generators, but also have to line it up well.
Also, REALLY want to reinstall and play Tie Fighter vs X-Wing now :(
