The two new Trident kits are ace, but man oh man, "we have Cathay at home, but dogs" is an epic flop for me

Same. I said it on Reddit, but I would rather have new Dwarf plastics than whatever this is.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Hmm, I quite like the Xirkaali. I'm still not sold on getting another Mantic starter box, I keep picking them up and not finishing them / getting them to the table. May just go for the books this time.

They look great to me. Hopefully they’ll work well with WA’s historicals.

I really like them, Mongolian themed Gnolls wasn't on my bingo card and not going Han Chinese with Dragons like GW wasn't really expected either (or going the Confrontation "celtic" Wulfen theme)

best waiting for the Champions box instead of picking the starter in this case

I'm just not a fan of a lot of the modern mantic aesthetic, too video gamey for me. The fishmen look alright though.

I have to assume they're coming. Ronnie from Mantic loves dwarfs.

They are definitely coming, as are Elves, the question is just when.

We got the names of the expansion books and know 1 army in each get a full rework or is a new army
Question now is, will "Arrogance" have Dwarfs or Elves as the reworked army

Has anyone heard whether the...

Slimline Rulebook (includes an Introduction to Pannithor, Core Rules & Army Building)

...in the starter sets includes the army lists?

My club had a great time playing AoF Regiments last night in our discussion afterwards showed little interest in getting into this edition of KoW even though we enjoyed a KOW campaign a couple years ago.

I'm still thinking that I'd like to keep my toe in KoW. That would certainly be easier if the small book had army lists and I could just hunt down one of them Rather than dropping $60 on a big rulebook that might not see any play.

The mini rulebook doesn't have the advanced rules and doesn't have the lists either.

If you don't want the hardback rulebook then your other alternative at this point is the Mantic Companion I guess.

Bummer.

That's a good idea though. Assuming the rules and lists for 4th will be available free there, I might be able to convince folks to give KOW a try that way.

I do think KOW is a better game, but it's a tough sell when so many group members are satisfied with AOF.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Mantic gives the full PDF away, even briefly. They have done it recently with Epic Warpath and Halo.

Depends on what shiny new starter sets we see for me tbh. I was pretty close to pulling the trigger on the Champions set but then rumblings of a new edition kicked off so I held off.

If there's a new Orcs v Dwarfs set I'll be over it. But I should really get on with Epic Warpath... FFS mantic

I picked up champions last month. It's a nice set and looks like it will be some quick knockabout fun once I have everything painted and assembled. A lot of the KoW4 rules were trialled in Champions first so it is nice to see from that perspective. Also the resin heroes will be cropping up in the new edition and at the moment the only way to get them is in the champions sets.

I missed this the other day, apologies. That's good to know, thanks!

Sad to see that they've repackaged the trident realm ambush starter into the same box but £12.50 more, glad I managed to pick one up at the old price before it disappeared. Was there a price rise announcement I missed?

No, just a hike bundled with the new edition repackaging.

no, and it is also the only box that sees that change as the Halfling box was increased in price but got more models
as does the 2nd Trident Battlegroup and the Xirkaali one as previous Ambush boxes were 1 infantry regiment + Large Infantry Regiment (which is now a Troop) but changed to 1 infantry regiment and 1 large infantry horde (now regiment) but increased in price.
Might be a mistake by confusing old or new regiments, or something different

in addition there may be the new plastic bases in the box, Ronnie said he thinks so but wasn't sure

I think that all large infantry/large cavalry sets will need to be repackaged due to the unit size naming changing.

My top tip is to look for retailers clearing their "out of date" stock at a discount which may end up being a bargain compared to the current prices.

Picked up 3 of the Northern Alliance Army sets, each with 20 Tribesmen/Hunters, 20 Berserkers/Archers, 2 Raven Riders and 1 Ice Blade at half price. I'll sell the additional Ice Blades and Raven Riders I don't need, and I think I'll end up making out like a bandit. I think both the Tribesmen and Berserker kits will mesh nicely with the new GW Norsca regiments. I also have some Shieldwolf Shieldmaidens floating around somewhere who could also be incorporated.

That's wild, in Europe nobody's going to discount miniatures because the box art changed. You'd be happy to find the defunct rulebook for 25% off.

I pick up defunct rulebooks all the time for $5-8.

Yeah I can't explain it. One store has them for sale at 20% off at $125, but I got mine for $60. They were the last 3 left, so I guess they're closing out their Mantic stock and want to just be rid of them. A win's a win. Now I just need to know what the heck I'd use 8 Frostclaw Riders for, considering I already bought a box of just the riders previously.

I am really looking to kitbashing all of these. The Mantic ones can make stronger Chaos Marauder types with some modification and Victrix Viking and Rus heads (same goes for the Mantic Berserkers), the Half-Elf female heads can be switched onto Shieldwolf Shieldmaiden bodies (I prefer the Mantic ones) and then mixed with Victrix Viking and Rus to make some cohesive units. Then if I need some characters or very special units, then I'll cave and buy the new GW Battalion to use for that. All in all, I think I'm going to enjoy making this army. I am so pleased with how much further along Mantic's plastic kits have come, and I am really looking forward to seeing what their Varangur look like.

I hope 4th ed swings things back around to making armies which are like for like compatible with GW ones. It's the best way to get people interested in Mantic products and to play KoW.

Is that true even in the era of The Old World being currently sold and supported? Mantic also has dropped the individual bases for models I'm told so a box of models won't be immediately very useful for Warhammer.

It's not too had to make multibases that you can put or take out individual models from, it's more about the miniatures and having things which can be used as a cheaper substitute for GW ones, while still looking really good.

won't count on that
you can basically take Twilight Kin, Trident Realm and Xirkaali on what way Mantic is going to take and non of those are close to being an equivalent to a current TOW army.

But this also makes me much more curious on how the Varangur will look like, as the classic Fantasy Viking theme that GW is using is more or less of the table for that.

There are lots of companies making plastic generic fantasy miniatures now. This wasn't the case when Mantic launched Kings of War when WHFB died.

I didn't know that. Is multibase now going to be the norm instead of a cool option?

It doesn't affect me at all since I don't use Mantic minis and I base everything separately so that they can be used with many different rules but for some reason it rubs me the wrong way.

It was the norm since 3.5 launched and boxes changed to include mdf bases instead of singles after that.

Mantic even sells under-strength boxes (16 models when solo based the unit should be 5x4)

Sorry, but Mantic are well past that.
They've been working to make KoW a distinct and different game with it's own lore and armies for years now.

AoS was 10 years ago, so I think the days of a big influx of "Warhammer Refugees" to any game system is past.
Mantic and the community are still accepting of non-Mantic models and there are still "traditional" fantasy armies in KoW, so fed up Warhammer players can still try KoW with their models. It just takes more figuring out.

Another way to think about it is if Mantic is selling Kings of War models primarily to Kings of War players, most of the plastic bases included would be unused. I probably have 200+ bases that I'm not really using and that's a lot of plastic to ship around the planet to just sit in people's homes and not get used.

And if you're basing models for other game systems, you might want Citadel style bases for your models anyway.
