I'm kind of goofy, I use both methods (typically you wouldn't). I think you could easily get away with a dark undercoat, a medium side/top coat, the two shades of highlights sprayed from progressively narrower angles. That will give you a very subtle but very natural gradation in shading.

If you really wanted to, you could then add a smidge of edge highlighting along the top-facing edges where the light would catch on a corner and reflect in all directions.

I prefer to keep my paint very thin when highlighting, as it allows it to blend more into the previous layer and gives a better gradient.

However with Space Wolves, drybrushing rules because of all the litle details on them.

Thanks, Gentlemen.

I just read Major Tom's article on Zenithal Highlighting, which is pretty much what Gits just described, I think. I may give that a try. I'm a little hesitant just now because I want to finish the models I've got started (so slow ) and not paint over them. I may grab an old space wolf and just give it a quick blast.

@dantay: that is one of the cutest profile pictures I've seen.

Yes he is growing so fast that it is scary, he is learning so fast and his speech is coming on in leaps and bounds. He has now become my satnav too.... whenever we are out for a drive all we hear from the back is TURN RIGHT!!! seems to be his favourite phrase for some reason.

So, what do you guys do when you can't find the motivation to paint.

(Yes, I'm aware how silly this sounds, considering how little I've painted, but honestly, in the last while, I haven't been excited to paint. I think I may just be dreading highlighting... )

Play a game against someone with a fully painted army. That should do it.

^ This, plus even seeing a fully done force should get your creative juices flowing enough to crank out some highlights :-) get googling my friend!

I give myself goals. As I only play in tournaments it gives me something to aim for and a deadline to have the next batch of minis painted for.

I also never play with unpainted minis, an old rule from when I played in GW when I was a wee nipper.

The other way is to buy a mini you really want to paint or some new paints to try out. I prefer the goal system myself give yourself a date and get cracking, make sure to break infantry blocks up with something interesting like a character or vehicle.

Thanks, Gentlemen!

@Gits & NF09: Yeah, well-painted armies are inspiring. Both of you inspire me! The only problem there is that when I see those armies, I want to paint those armies. (Stupid Turquoise Steamcrons....)

@GiraffeX: That's good advice. Thanks. I think I need to do two things: paint in small batches and figure out a system - paint all the base colors first, then shades, then highlights, etc. I haven't been doing that, and I think it's led to some frustration.

I feel you YB. Even though the Steamcrons are mine... I'm now getting an inkling that I might do something more closely inspired by Mechanicum Jon's DE for my craftworld eldar. I need to be working on another army like I need another hole in the head. (sigh)

I try to paint in groups of five, any more and I start to get bored of doing the same thing all the time.

@ Git's Eldar in the same scheme as Jon's DE would look fantastic, I expect you could do wonders on the aspect warriors.

Challenging, but I find once you get into your scheme you want to get more done. Starting is the hard part.

Yeah, nothing. Sorry. No salvation today.

Glad to see you're all still here. I'm going to be busy until January... busy then, too, but I hope to get something done then.

Hey, Asherian, welcome! I'm sorry that this blog is virtually dead. If it weren't for my firends.... Anyway, glad to hear you like what was going a while back. Hopefully, in the future, it will return.

Haven't had much time the last couple of days, but I got some work done on SL's Lamenter:

What do you think?

Should I put the severed hand and sword in front or between legs or leave it off?

To be honest, it looks sorta ridiculous sitting on the ground like it fell off and he can't figure out why, lol.

The other problem is, that once detached, it highlights just how comically oversized the weapons are in the game.

I think if you want to go with a guy who has been cripple, you need to work on his pose somewhat. Make it a bit more dynamic.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Mk V "Heresy" Assault Marines

Wow! it took me a long time to put these guys together! Seriously, though, I started these guys on Tuesday and finished them this morning. And I still have some GS work and cleaning to do. They turned out alright, though, I think. Not entirely pleased with the guy in the middle, but the others look pretty good. Nothing really creative, here; just tried to emulate the examples on the Forge World page. Jump Packs are magnetized....

Mk V "Heresy" Assault Marine w/ Flamer

Some urban bases for them...

And I began fiddling around with a couple of Dark Vengeance Terminators:

Nothing too fancy. I filed off the DA icons, repositioned the arms (slightly), and cut off the heads for a head swap. Added a couple of Mk V helmets to create some continuity with the other marines. I'll add some Mk IV and Mk III when I put those marines together later.

I need to add something behinde their helmets to cover up some of the empty space. Suggestions? I tried making a press mold of a standard terminator cowl, but it was too thick. Maybed cast it?

Credit where credit is due: My converisons are not nearly as involved or as creative as his, but I was inspired to try these out by KrautScientist's Legio Custodes Terminators, especially this guy. More can be seen here and here.

The new marines are looking great YB. Not sure on the term with his bolter in the air, If his arm went up straight it would be fine but it seems to be at a funny angle.

Looking good YB! Each army starts with but a single figure... and you're WAY ahead of that already. Good show mate.

Mostly, on my phone.

Way cool. You really need termie torso fronts to chop up my friend, or alternatively you could cut down SM shoulder pads along the interior vertical side to create a inverted U shape. If you need termie parts - torsos included - lmk and I'll have a hunt. I'm fairly sure I have a heap.

Looking good YB! I'm glad to see you're getting back into the swing of things again!

My suggestion for the cowl replacement would probably be a bit of plasticard. Though Im really liking Graven's idea with using pads chopped down. Id say really experiment!

@GiraffeX: Thanks! I totally agree with you on the terminator's arm. Is this any better?

GS needs to be cleaned up a bit, obviously....

@Gits: Thanks, Gits! I really appreciate the encouragement. Here's a couple more for you...

3 Corvies:

and a Termie:

6 Resin Mk 5 Marines and 2 Plastic Termie conversions: 5 days. 3 Platstic Mk 6 Marines a 1 Plastic Termie conversion: 5 hours. Go figure. Packs are magnetized. Not much changed on the Termie. Head swap was a little trickier because of the wing on the shoulder. Also changed the little DA icon on the cord for a skull....

@Graven: You, my friend, are a genius. How does this look?

And all 3 Termies:

Might need a little adjusting still....

@Ramos: Thanks, mate. I hope I can keep up with it this time.
