I just can't agree with you here. Now the Zombie dragon is also out of my price range, but it is a damn lovely model, and sprued plastic to boot. It has bones that look like bones and not raised ridges on a central core of plastic. It has a choice of configurations, and thus lots of spare parts for later conversions. The riders look great. If anyone other than GW sold it, it would have a great reputation. Kaladrax just seems more limited in comparison.

Of course, I said the same kinds of things about Mantic's Wildcard, and that model turned out to be excellent in real life, so I could be wrong. Hopefully we'll see some painted examples of Kaladrax photographed from different angles.

Sorry - I think that the zed dragon from GW looks way too cartoonish for my tastes.

It has lots of configurations, yes, but they all look cartoony. Trust me, that was a model that I really wanted to like - and it does look better than the craptastic Sphinxes or the rather horrible giant spider (another model that I wanted to like).

But given the choice... I will take Kaladrax over the zombie dragon. And have, given that I added the Bones version and have already painted the original metal version.

As for changing the configuration - it is wicked easy to change the configuration of the older metal Kaladrax, not as easy as the plastics, but the bones are easy to cut apart, reposition, and pin. Mine comes around and over a ruined building, and did not take that long to convert.

This new version... maybe not as easy, but I can't really say yet. At the least I would say that the plastic has too much memory, and will likely revert to it's original positions unless really hot water is used.

And, for the record, I have a lot of undead dragons... from a lot of companies, including the original zombie dragon from Ral Partha, back in the eighties and the toy undead dragon by McFarlane Toys. Not liking the new GW plastic zed dragon bothered me.

Those dragons are an amazing deal. Kaladrax doesn't feel like one. I guess when I see Papo/Schleich/Safari quality I expect to see a similar price (or less since Bones are not prepainted).
Uhm, Did you ever see the higher price point Schleich dragons Antylar & Faraun? They were not Kaladrax Reborn's size, looked like hatchlings and were closing in on the $50 retail price tag, if not past that. BTW, If you like them, there is a limited edition Red Faraun on ebay ATM.

I'm not saying big K is perfect, but at his price point, I'm pretty sure he is under what Schleich would charge for his equivalent. Safari limited doesn't have any of their higher quality dragon in big K's size, but I think the Retail of their larger sauropods bear out a Safari skeletal dragon in Big K's size would clock in near the $70 if not more.

total coming soon... ish

@AuldGrump Fair enough. We just have different tastes in our dragons, especially zombie dragons. (For me, a living dragon is always more desirable than a zombie dragon.)

@FranktheDM I must admit that I haven't shopped for Schleich/Safari dragons in years and years. I probably wouldn't spend that kind of money on any toy dragon, and I love dragons. I guess my main point is that Kaladrax is not a very impressive model, in my opinion, especially for his price.

I don't know... he seems pretty darned impressive to me for a $10 model.....

For $75... I would wait until I needed one, which, given that I have more than a dozen undead dragons.....

But I do like him better than the GW zed dragon.

The most commonly used undead dragons that I have are the Chaos Dragon by Grenadier, way back when (1986?), and the RAFM Necrodrake. My first undead dragon (the original Ral Partha that I mentioned above) looks kind of weedy these days, but the Colossal Lords undead dragon by Grenadier? Still awesome. (But too fragile to use.)

Think that is the big thing - he is an impressive even if he is still a big lump of plastic in the middle. I think I might pop him open and carve out the meat between the ribs when I get mine all the same though in order to help enhance the skeletal nature of him.

In other news...

From the Paizo Forums from ReaperBryan:

"I'm almost ready to start shipping, but the biggest real news is that after crunching numbers, my estimate of this only taking 3 weeks was stupidly optimistic. This is going to take at least 5 weeks, and possibly longer. Add to that ReaperCon happening in the middle of that fulfillment, which is going to halt everything for at least a week while we do that..."

They still haven't gotten the final shipment. It is in country - but it is buried behind the bureaucratic nightmare which is customs. I am sure it doesn't help that the shipping manifest says something like "bones" on it.

That was pretty much my point. For $10, he was totally worth it. For $75? I started to notice his flaws a lot more. I sure wouldn't buy one at that price point unless it was exactly what i needed (which it would never be). There is a price point between those numbers, probably around $50 or so, where it could still be enough of an impulse buy for me not to care (or have to take the time and weigh upon the fact) that the "skeletal" dragon has a detail-free solid core and goofy anatomy in places.

$75 is the price of a starter box or a sweet pledge on some upcoming Kickstarter, and that fact will cloud my eyes every time I look at a $75 Kaladrax. Now, if he came with a mini rule and fluff pamphlet, and was costed as an entire army for, I don't know, Kings of War or something, then I could see him being a consideration. It would be a lot easier to justify spending $75 on one model that I can't even assemble into a pose I like under those circumstances. Maybe.

I do still think that he is worth the $75 price tag, but I will also admit that being worth $75 and my actually spending $75 are two different things.

That said, I would more likely spend $75 for this than $50 for the zed dragon by GW.

And... a passing thought... how easy would it be to drill out cavities in the Bones material that would be big enough to take a small glow stick? The 'bracelet' kind for the neck, the normal kind for the torso.... Paint the bones with opaque colors, and the spaces between with stains, inks, and/or lacquers.

Id guess that the chest is actually hollow on those. We had had some plastic parts done up, and our engineer said that you try to make everything the same thickness...so you probably have 1/8" side walls and a hollow core. Being virgin PVC, something like an LED or CFL lightbulb should light it up niceley with a little shaving in the thick spots.

Would make for an interesting lamp, to be certain.

Regarding fluff and rules, that is one of the big differences between Reapers core demo and GWs. The customers who Reaper is generally selling at already have fluff and rules for something like this. Whether it is a D&D dracolich or a different systems take on the same creature...they all know what it is, and have rules for it.

Sounds like they might be getting really close to shipping everythin out now...

Also in the same thread, the big dragons seem to be coming in parts...so easier to cut up and convert.

I really want to see some pictures of Nethymrmaul the Undying.

I will also be seeing as soon as it arrives just how easy or otherwise it is to chop the bits between the ribs/etc out of Kaladrax - also might see if I can repose him similar to a Trevigon, or even get him flying

and this is how the shipping will work,

people who ordered 1 vampire level (then 2, 3 etc)

then those who ordered 1 vampire level + 1 option eg figure or paint set (then 2 vampires + 1 option etc

Orders will be split into USA, Canada (ships en mass to RAFM in canada for distribution), ROW and in general they will rotate between them based on the scheme above

so get ready to enjoy

Might sound like it will be awhile, but I am guessing this will be all hands on deck, so the various steps will go pretty fast.

Hopefully RAFM is ready for when the palettes start to show up for them to split in Canada too though.

Actually you get lucky by being Australian this time,

There are fewer international backers than US/Canadians, so yours will be sent earlier than the equivalent sized order from there
(of cource transit time may still get into play)

News just up from Reaper Bryan

The complete Vampire package will have a MSRP of $399 (yes Reaper will be selling them as a full set after KS fulfilment is done)

this will represent a 20% Discount of getting all the models individually.

which makes our (Vampire + backers) $100 deal all the sweeter (and will also please those who jumped in late at, I belive, $150)

Has anyone come across the new sculpt of Hyrekia that comes with Kaladrax? I can only seem to find the old version, and the impression I have is that a new version comes with the big guy.

hot off the press:

KS backers will get a new Hyrekia but in a separate bag, not in with Kaladrax, and the retail version of Kaladrax won't have her
(I don't recall seeing a decent picture of the finished mini)

Yep...should start seeing a whole lot of pictures of a whole lot of miniatures soon. I have been seeing lots of people posting that they have recieved tracking numbers.

Will be interesting if Kit can get the counter working to display how many have shipped...have a felling that might become the new F5 for a lot of people.
