Hi Dakka,
I was doing some writing, and I started wondering: what kind of music would soldiers in the imperial guard (specifically cadians) listen to? Would it be restricted to 'uplifting' battle hymms, or would there be a squad member with a harmonica in his kit? What kind of stuff do you think would be popular?
Related to this, do you think there would still be movies about teams of human badasses blowing up aliens and cracking jokes?
Let me know what you think!

And bad propaganda movies. Ciaphas Cain especially hates the movies they make about him, they shoehorn him into badly written romantic plots for no good reason.

According to Ravenor, on at least one world there is the Carnivora circus, featuring acrobats (dancers wearing body paint and little else), exotic animals (killing each other in bloody deathmatches), and eardrum-burstingly loud obnoxious music.
Oh, and
Spoiler:
heresy.
Sounds like a good time!

You - Ha! You've activated my trap card! Allied army! Come forth to assist!

Wolf Heathen - An equal point match?! This is not acceptable! Tau friend! Form up on me!
And then some guy throws a manta at the table and promptly breaks it in half sending figures and terrain everywhere.

They have everything we have today. Obviously filtered to respect the God Emperor and Imperial Authority etc...
Which really doesn't restrict much.
Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines
Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
I don't think there would be any movies with badasses kicking butt because the guardsmen are THE badasses.
Seeing a squad of veterens swoop in in a Vendetta, secure the area, deliver that math assignment, and extract within 2 minutes would be freaking sweet.
Everything is isolated to individual worlds. Many planets have TV and so on, but only insofar as on their own worlds. There isn't an "Imperial News Network" shown on most worlds or so on.Nor is there internet or so on at the interstellar level.
The only way for real interstellar communication are Astropaths, which are glorified telegrams. Though I imagine worlds within the same system can communicate via satellite/radio waves with a few minutes delay.
If you want an example of TV in fluff, Konrad Curze had televisions installed in every house in Nostramo so that his brutal executions of those who disturbed his order would be witnessed by all and also I imagine so Nostramans could be monitored by the Night Haunters secret police.

It comes down to the old 'a million different worlds a million different cultures'. There's going to be every conceivable kind of entertainment and recreation that you can think of.

I'll also add the rule that "it can't possibly be as stupidly grimdark as GW tries to portray it as." Especially on the more advanced worlds. Although it varies greatly, on some of the more advanced worlds, you'll likely find something similar to a simstim (Neuromancer) or fealie (Brave New World). Traditional forms of media and art are also likely prevalent.
Furthermore, it's incredibly unlikely that artistic expression is in anyway dead or dying in the world of 40k, even in the presence of the oppression and propaganda that the Imperium pushes.

Necrons cannot even speak, thus the only music you hear when fighting Necrons is the enemy's screams of pain and despair, knowing well they cannot win and will find their timely end sooner than anticipated...

Well fenrisians like to drink while fishing, drink while hunting, chase shield maidens while drinking, and of course some times they do a little social drinking.
im pretty sure whenever you fight a DE army, that IS their entertainment. probally same could be said for orcs.. as for space marines - i believe they all had their "fun genes" removed from the gene sead. as fun is heretical and goes against the emprahs wishes. after all:
- recreation leads to fun
- fun leads to enjoyment
- enjoyment leads to something
- something leads to chaos
chaos is the dark side.
something something dark side.
